I’m not saying don’t buy any Christmas presents. I’m simply asking that you think very carefully about what you choose to buy.
Many of us are facing financial difficulties, and there’s no need to go into debt for the sake of gifting. When you give someone a gift, it can create an unspoken obligation to reciprocate—so consider giving only to those you know are comfortable receiving without pressure to give back.
We’re also in the midst of a climate emergency, and mindless consumption only adds to the problem. Rather than buying something for the sake of it, consider gifts that are more meaningful or sustainable. Handmade items, experiences, or donations to a cause close to someone’s heart are all wonderful alternatives that reduce waste and environmental impact.
Ultimately, the spirit of Christmas isn’t about the size or cost of a gift but the thought behind it. Let’s focus on creating memories and connections that last longer than any wrapped package ever could.
