DS apparently likes playing with these at nursery so I'd like to get him some for xmas. I see they come in various different amounts, if you have some what size pack would you recommend?

A big set - you need more than you think to make fun things!

I bought a big set and a couple of smaller sets and could still have used more! You do need a lot more than you think.

As many as you can afford! 200-500 would be amazing. Wish we'd got more. It's important to get triangles as well as squares for more designs. Also, the instructions book is a godsend for my daughter, she follows the designs in there and the instructions

Wow sounds like something we will be adding to over the years! Thanks all, will look at some of the larger packs!

We bought a good set for my grandson for his birthday but have also picked up more quite cheaply on local Facebook marketplace in near perfect condition.

Singleandproud · 22/10/2024 11:45

It's the type of thing that will come up second hand, in charity shops and at car boots regularly so it's worth keeping an eye out to add to them.

Sunseeker83 · 22/10/2024 12:22

We have 100 and it's not enough. Be careful
of buying the cheap ones as magnets might come out which is not ideal if you have smaller kids

User170451 · 22/10/2024 12:29

Definitely a bigger set. We started with a big set and have added smaller sets on birthdays and Christmas since. They are expensive but have been worth every penny. We have had them going on 5 years now and they are still used almost every day

Cantgetbehindtheradiator · 22/10/2024 14:34

We got 2 of the 57 piece desire duluxe one (have 2 DC so was one each) and that worked pretty well as long as they were working on shared projects.

Have bought a 3rd set to go under the tree for this year as there never seems to be enough triangles to go around. If I could buy just triangles I totally would!

They're currently 40% off - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Desire-Deluxe-Magnetic-Building-Blocks/dp/B07MGYKZ36

Definitely the most played with toy in our home.

Hwx · 22/10/2024 21:31

I checked our box and it's 110 pieces. It's good for building with 1 child or if 2 are building the same thing but you can start to run out if trying to build more than one thing at a time.

Completelyjo · 22/10/2024 21:31

At least 100.

Pumpkinseason3 · 22/10/2024 21:34

I second @Cantgetbehindtheradiator recommendation 😊 That’s the ones we have and they’ve been great. DS has played with them every single day since he was 2 (he’s just about to turn 4!) and they’re still going strong 😊 I think we have 3 sets now!

Another vote for the desire duluxe ones from Amazon. My nearly 7 year old still plays with them daily. We have a big crate now.
