Do they still make mp3 players?

Looking for something for my eight year old son for Christmas and I’m probably showing my age here but are mp3 players still a thing? Slightly disappointed to find iPods aren’t available any longer! I don’t want to get him a mobile phone or anything like that but wondered if there’s something out there that would be a good gift. Many thanks for any suggestions!

I got my daughter a boombox (as in the ones we had in the 90s) and a selection of CDs for her 7th birthday. She now likes to have a look around charity shops for CDs to add to her collection. It’s a really cute (and cheap!) hobby

That’s really lovely!

Thanks for these links too - lots to have a look at!

@caitlinsjoy the only thing about buying old CDs is you look at your child's choice and you find yourself thinking "I had this one....." 😂

That’s the best bit!

I got my daughter one that has some games on it too. Perfect for that age.

I've had a lot of Sony Walkman MP3 players over the years - only charging them to upgrade to get more storage capacity or other features like Bluetooth. The NWZ-A15 is the 2nd one I've had (first one ruined by jumping into a river..) and it's the best one I've had. It has a slot to take a Micro SD card - currently this has a 256Gb card in it - naturally it came with 16Gb, an FM radio and Bluetooth (so I can use it with wireless headphones). If this beginner tomorrow - I'd immediately look for a replacement although eBay seems to be about the only place you can find older models like this.

How would you get the music onto the MP3 player now?

Connect a cable between PC/laptop and the MP3 player then move files from the computers to the player.

Do you have to burn CDs into the computer first?

Yes, but if you buy from Amazon, you get an MP3 download too. Can you tell I still use an MP3 player - it's also one of the older Sony Walkman types. I have a decent speaker for it and prefer it to paying for a streaming service (I just use Youtube and put up with ads otherwise).

It’s the modern equivalent of me going around looking for vinyls in my teens 😂

I bought my young DCs an iPod touch (second hand on eBay). You can add parental restrictions so they can only access the apps you allow (in my case: Music / iTunes, podcasts and camera and that was it initially. No internet / email etc). It meant that they could access the family sharing iTunes accounts as we're iPhone users and it was just easy.

I would love something that’s not a phone or iPad for my son to listen to audible and music on. I don’t think there is a thing that does this though.

Yes of course, search amazon
