Has anyone bought a Sylvanian family set for a boy? Did it go down well?

Was thinking about the canal boat set for my soon to be 3yr old

My son who is now 12 would have loved that when he was 3! He was always more interested in toys like those and making pretend games with them at that age but as he grew and started school, he definitely changed lol

AmeliaEarache · 06/10/2024 12:59

Just a small word of caution - the accessories are tiny! If he’s nearly-4 rather than only-just-3 it’s probably ok, but it’s worth bearing in mind.

However, yes, Sylvanian family stuff is fine for girls and boys both.

Marblesbackagain · 06/10/2024 13:00

Yes I did he is now 16. He loved the car too.

Wanderless · 06/10/2024 13:02

Yes. My son loved playing with any toy 'figures' & that's all they are isn't it. The 'Toy boats' etc are the same as a boat from Paw Patrol etc.

He particularly loved the ones where you get some clothes/accessories with them in a set (although they are expensive!)
When he was 8, he spent ages playing with his sisters, he liked dressing them in the different outfits & they just joined in with his dinosaurs or whatever else he was playing with at the time. So I got him his own.

Sylvanian families are really fiddly with lots of tiny parts. Playmobil do a selection of different boats that would be easier to play with at this stage and get the Sylvanians later.

My son loved the canal boat!

Hmm he will only be 3 in November so maybe it's too small for him then.

They are so cute! I can't see why a little boy wouldn't want to play with them. And all little kids love anything to do with boats. I always presumed they were unisex, but I actually played with them up untill I was in the last year of primary school. By that age I'd say most of the boys I knew would not have been into it. But at 3 it's perfect!

Sylvanians are for everyone! Yes lots of tiny parts but the buildings and figures and some of the accessories are fine for that age so I’d say buy it but put the teeny tiny bits away for when he’s older.

Wanderless · 06/10/2024 13:20

I think the figures mostly come with a top & trousers/dress, so not fiddly bits. That's been my experience with them & the boat which you linked looks fine so I'd say go for it.

I remember I got my daughter a nursery set (or similar) which had some tiny musical instruments, she was either just 3 or just 4 but I hid those away before I gave the rest of the set to her.

That's cute. My little one has some sylvanian family stuff it's fine, I just kept the really tiny stuff in a box to bring out later

Leeds2 · 06/10/2024 13:29

I don't think there is any reason why boys shouldn't have Sylvanians but, at your son's age, I would probably go with Playmobil instead as it is much more sturdy!

Canal boat, car and caravan were firm favourites with DS, he also had the stable with pony. Caught MIL playing with it when no-one was in the room once, combing the mane, it was really sweet. But as others have said some bits are tiny.

MyOwnToes · 06/10/2024 13:37

Sylvanians are for everyone- I know lots of boys who liked them. But if he’s not three yet then playmobil might be a better shout.

WhatMe123 · 06/10/2024 13:38

My friends little boy loved ours, he also loved the peppa pig train, car and plane at that age

yikesanotherbooboo · 06/10/2024 14:15

DS loved his Sylvanians; I think he was about three . He never put things in his mouth and usually played with his older DSis so the little pieces may not have been a problem.

Creditschmedit · 06/10/2024 14:24

I don’t think there’s any children’s toy that you can only get for one sex… why do things have to be classed as “girls toys” and “boys toys”? If you think he would enjoy them then get them 🤷‍♀️

cookiebee · 06/10/2024 14:45

Awesome, if he’s old enough for the small parts then absolutely, BUT please get those poor critters moved to better dwellings as soon as possible, you have to go through the toilet to get to the bedroom, poor poor creatures!
