BIL and SIL, both early 20s, have booked a trip to NY over Christmas, they are flying out 23rd, I wanted to get them something fun and/or practical they could take on their trip as a Christmas present.

Budget of around £30, DH suggested just getting some dollars, which we may still do but wondered if anyone had any good ideas?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

My first thought was dollars! It's so expensive. You don't want to give them something practical they need to lug all the way there and back, and with your budget you can't really afford to get them tickets for anything.

Dollars saying a drink or two on you

It's going to be COLD so maybe a luxury version of something they'll be sure to pack anyway. Maybe warm, cashmere blend socks? These from John Lewis are on my Christmas list ~ the totes ones are so comfy and it's a nice wintery pattern without being OTT www.johnlewis.com/totes-cashmere-blend-ankle-socks-pack-of-2-grey-cream/p112245111 but you'd need to find some men's ones too depending on shoe size etc. Or gloves maybe, if they're the glove wearing type (I'm not!)

Can't really think of much else they'd definitely use at that price point. Dollars is a good idea 👍

@Mydogisaknob sorry if I wasn't clear, I re wrote the post a few times and missed the main part out. We usually spend £40 on each of them, we were going to just covert £80 into dollars but I was thinking of converting £50 into dollars and buying them a little something to take with them with the remaining £30 but you are probably right we should just convert the £80 and I'll try to find a nice NYC themed card to put the money in.

Thank you! Smile

They look lovely! My MIL would love them, she is always complaining of cold feet. I've just added them to my basket, thank you Smile

Agree with pp saying mainly dollars but possibly a small ‘stocking filler’ to open to. I miss British chocolate when in the USA as an example. Possibly smallish box or carton of chocolates or small tin of shortbread? But nothing too heavy or delicate…

Blanketyre · 05/10/2024 09:59

Deffo dollars! They can buy themselves a lovely lunch in a deli or something.

American tea is gross so maybe some f and m tea bags (remove the box)

I’d get something like this with the dollars but depends if they are the sort of people who would like an actual small gift to open.

A multi way adapter/ charger

Some chocolates/pralines to eat over Christmas as a nice extra. American chocolate is vile unless you buy the really expensive imported or artisan ones. Easier to buy some here and if it is in the hold luggage and unopened they can take it into the US.

I was bought a really lovely passport holder wallte around that age. 20+ years on, I still use it, and it always brings back happy memories.

LynetteScavo · 06/10/2024 08:32

When will they open the gift? Before they go?

BeaLola · 06/10/2024 12:46

How about this to put the dollars in
