Is there such a thing as a fabulous hot water bottle?

Can I ask for recommendations for a truly lovely hot water bottle if such a thing exists. We've somehow lost ours! Going to treat each other to new ones for Christmas.

Budget not really a consideration as last one lasted for 11yrs so would rather spend more for similar quality. Would replace that, but can't for the life of me think where it came from. Everything seems to have a really crap synthetic faux fur (or similarly naff) cover...or is one of those alternative microwaveable jobs that smells of stale biscuits.

Is there a really super one that we're missing out on?

Thank you for this, not seen these before.

Why are they lovely please? Are they not just normal bottles but longer and thinner?

Also following!

i hate those yuyu bottles as they are long and narrow and lose heat quickly. I also don’t like filling them as they are spurt hot water.

i would love to find a bottle which lasts more than a couple of years with a decent cover.

LePetitMaman · 16/09/2024 22:47

Well, if nothing else, we've found a gap in the market!!

This, and good doormats! Why doesn't a good looking and functional doormat exist?

Mine isn’t fancy but I have a furry one with a big flap so can actually slide your feet inside. I’m not usually a fan of warm feet in bed but honestly, it’s an absolute joy. I look forward to using it each year as the weather cools.

The White Company - long faux fur hot water bottle around £45 - but its soooo lovely and soft and keeps warm for ages!

DelilahBucket · 16/09/2024 22:54

Hot water bottles should be replaced every two to three years, it's why they have the year of manufacture on them. The rubber disintegrates and becomes a hazard. So the actual bottle itself is just a hit water bottle. The cover is a different kettle of fish.

I'm pretty sure I read or heard recently that they should only be used for one or two years as rubber disintegrates and can burst.

Yep.

But also have been using hot water bottles for over 40yrs personally, and was in fact having this exact conversation with the girls at work today, who between us, have never had a bottle "wear out".

Manufacturers seem to mostly have gone back to rubber from silicone - I suppose the silicone ones don't wear out fast enough!
We used to have one like this

but it got nasty and mouldy inside in the end 😥

Until it does and your left with scars

Whatever you buy, I'd suggest shopping around - I've seen the same bottles £10 to £15 cheaper on some sites. Fashy are good, don't smell, have a wider mouth for easy filling and come in a variety of patterns and colours, though it's a shame they discontinued the horizontal wavy line pattern - their current standard range look more traditional. The Fashy 'honeycomb' transparent ones look good but be aware they are 'boxy' rather than floppy. I bought some smaller, 0.8L rubber Sanger bottles in various colours as stocking-fillers last year and they were popular, especially with young relatives in a chilly old house. They're a handy size to have on your lap when desk working or watching tv.

Purplebunnie · 16/09/2024 23:07

I have normally get my bottle from Boots.

I have a kettle that you can set the temperature it heats to. So have been setting for 80 degrees. Not as warm in the morning but in theory should last longer

But I'm really here to see some other bottles😉

OK, well as long as you know best. My relative had a very nasty burn, but you do you.

IvyTwines · 16/09/2024 23:36

They do wear out - with time and 'normal' use, the heat damages the rubber / plastic, and this is accelerated if you don't follow instructions and use water that's too hot. If it has a cover and it's badly designed so you need to bend the neck or waist of the bottle repeatedly, it'll weaken there, too. Manufacturers state you should replace them regularly.

I recently bought a gorgeous long one with lovely thick fabric heart pattern cover for my DD from booths... Just tried to find it on their website... It's not on there.
But I came across this while trying...

I love Hugo Frosch hot water bottles. They aren't made of rubber. Having had an old rubber one burst on me before that's quite a bonus.

sausageupanalley · 17/09/2024 00:17

I used to love them and slept with one most of the year, but them i had one burst on me and it was very nasty, a and e, bandages, etc. After that I no longer use them and use an electric blanket instead. It's just as cosy if you switch it on 10 mins before bed and it doesn't go cold!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/09/2024 01:00

I really like my electric one, heats up in five minutes, perfect temperature and lasts ages. It's not luxurious by any stretch of the imagination but I'm really pleased with it.

Nat6999 · 17/09/2024 02:58

I would never have a traditional hot water bottle again after seeing someone I follow on social media who had been badly scalded after using a hot water bottle for period pain. She had put the bottle down the front of her leggings & it burst, scalding her stomach, groin & thighs, she was in hospital for weeks & had to have skin grafts. I now use an electric bottle, much safer to use.
