Is there such a thing as a fabulous hot water bottle?

Can I ask for recommendations for a truly lovely hot water bottle if such a thing exists. We've somehow lost ours! Going to treat each other to new ones for Christmas.

Budget not really a consideration as last one lasted for 11yrs so would rather spend more for similar quality. Would replace that, but can't for the life of me think where it came from. Everything seems to have a really crap synthetic faux fur (or similarly naff) cover...or is one of those alternative microwaveable jobs that smells of stale biscuits.

Is there a really super one that we're missing out on?

Hot water bottles should be replaced every two to three years, it's why they have the year of manufacture on them. The rubber disintegrates and becomes a hazard. So the actual bottle itself is just a hit water bottle. The cover is a different kettle of fish.

Do you mean a cover like this?

Electric one. Safe and zero faff

FutureFeelsBleak · 17/09/2024 06:40

I have ordered an electric one on the strength of this thread. Who knew such a thing existed? Thanks for the enlightenment!

SparePantsAndLego · 17/09/2024 06:49

@LePetitMaman this is what you need. It revolutionised my winter. I even took it away with me and then bought a second one for DS.
You will never need another one (unless you lose it!).
it keeps the hot water bottle warm until morning. It’s perfect.
You will want to put it in bed before you get in as it doesn’t feel as instantly hot as normal covers but it’s because it’s thick so it the heat has to make it though.

Sorry for typos, morning multitasking!

Through not though!

Cheesypumpkin · 17/09/2024 07:00

A stoove! Best thing ever.

Theraffarian · 17/09/2024 07:01

I was always very much of the opinion that water bottles having an expiry date was just a marketing ploy/ tool for manufacturers not to get it trouble for accidents . However after using them for 40 years plus , ( not the same ones ,) mine burst in the bed last year .

Luckily it had been put in to warm the bed so I wasn’t in it , I’ve heard of others bursting since then , maybe they aren’t as well made as they used to be , but I’m definitely sticking to the recommended dates now and just reusing the covers .

I am terrifying the cat with this atm: https://direct.asda.com/george/home/bedding/duvets/guinea-pig-winter-warmer-hot-water-bottle/060044705 but it is a bit of a novelty one.

https://amzn.eu/d/drWJ4MC this one really keeps the heat and is soft with a hand/foot flap.

mitogoshigg · 17/09/2024 07:45

Get a standard sized one, you can then replace the actual bottle as needed and keep the same cover. That said I have a rice and lavender microwave bag one that is plenty warm enough, I don't use it in bed but ideal for pain purposes

forevernumb · 17/09/2024 08:29

Highly recommend a real sheepskin one.

MIL always used the "stone" one she'd had since the year dot and my aunt had some aluminium ones that I still use occasionally to air my spare beds.

The washers need replacing occasionally... and they're not very cuddly 😁

My mum very randomly brought me an electric hot water bottle last year. It’s surprisingly good!!! Just plug it in for a few mins and then it’s good for about 4-6 hours !

aliceinanwonderland · 17/09/2024 11:09

Not a fluffy cover, but you can buy that separately

This is still (luke) warm after 12 hours and doesn't have that horrible rubber smell

Sandwichgen · 17/09/2024 11:20

Are the electric ones full of water or not? Do they not have the same risk of splitting/bursting?

Toomanyclothesinmywardrobe · 17/09/2024 19:18

Get a real sheepskin one. Mine is still warm in the morning! You will never go back…

(and you can use them without any hot water in for those nights when your feet are a bit chilly when you first get into bed, but you don’t need extra heat all night long).

OldTinHat · 17/09/2024 19:28

No, imo.

But there are fabulous electric blankets!

LePetitMaman · 17/09/2024 21:03

The bursting stories sound horrendous!!

I actually don't want one now. But very interested in the electric versions which I'd never heard of until this thread.

Are they really worth having? Any risks?

This thread is terrifying but informative.

shakeitoffsis · 17/09/2024 21:12

I have a stoov electric hot water bottle. You can use the rechargeable battery to use it on the go or plug it in. It's fantastic and a lovely velour material.

LittleMousewithcloggson · 17/09/2024 21:38

Bought my mum the stoov one and it has been amazing
Stats warm for hours, charges easily and looks lovely
I want to buy some for me and my kids but have since moved jobs and can’t really afford 3 at their prices
Can anyone recommend a cheaper one?

Could you link to an electric hot water bottle?

NeonGiraffe · 18/09/2024 03:28

An electric heat pad. It's a rectangular piece of material, like a small section of heated blanket. Inexpensive (there are many options.) it's the best thing I ever bought. No more re filling the hot water bottle.

Tryingtohelp12 · 18/09/2024 06:52

Mine looks like this but no idea if it’s the exact same one! Rechargeable Electric Hot Water Bottle Bed Hand Body Warmer Massaging Heat Pad Cozy Pain Relief Fast Heating Auto-Shut Off Function Over-Heat Protection & No Refill Heat Pad 25cm x 17cm Pink

I have the heat pad too which is also great but stays plugged in so not moveable. Love the hot water bottle in the car for an early morning commute on my knee!

Exx · 18/09/2024 12:45

Goodness, I wouldn't use anything with a lithium ion battery in my bed while I am asleep. I know they are pretty safe but DH had a phone melt in his pocket when its battery failed.

I had a look at the Stoov website - what a load of techno-babble! All that stuff about the wonderful infra-red radiation their products produce - as if a bonfire, the sun, even a warm dog doesn't produce exactly the same.

nb. Stoov's "over-heating" protection wouldn't help one bit if a battery failed.
