Has anyone been on a Butlin’s Christmas weekend break?

I’m considering surprising my husband with a weekend in Butlin’s early December. We’d also be taking our 6 and 10 year old.
We’ve been in the summer and we all loved it but I’m not sure if it would have the same appeal in December.
Has anyone else been there for a weekend in December? Would you recommend?

We went last year and loved it. So much for the kids to do and it really feels magical!

Yes, we went two years ago and no, personally I wouldn't recommend it. We went to Minehead.

I'm far from a snob but honestly I really don't understand how so many people rave about Butlins. Our accommodation was...adequate (being generous). Stained carpets, black marks all over the walls, saggy mattresses. Clean enough but very in need of a good refurbishment.

Outside - bloody filthy. Absolutely stinking in several areas. Overflowing bins, bin bags piled up and ripped and rubbish visibly scattered on numerous green areas between the chalets. Rats which the dc stood on our doorstep and had great fun counting as they scampered between the bushes out front.

Swimming pool - great. Changing rooms - again, filthy and I really don't use that word lightly. I have never seen such a disgustingly filthy floor in a pool changing room anywhere in the UK OR abroad. Dirty nappies, bits of rubbish and just black muck. Not a cleaner in sight.

Entertainment was great but it really didn't make up for the surroundings. There was definitely nothing magical about it, even with the Xmas lights and stuff, not with the rubbish and rats and how poor and scruffy so many areas were.

If you want magical, go to Bluestone. It's well worth the money and is leagues and leagues ahead of Butlins. Even their cheapest accommodation is beautiful and spotless and it's kept like a new pin everywhere.

Thanks for replying. How old are your kids? And what specifically was there to do?

@StartingANewNameToday ah I’m so sorry that was your experience!
We went to Bognor, not sure if that makes a difference or not as I haven’t been to Minehead.
I actually think we were originally booked for minehead but they had some flooding and had to shut some of their accommodation so we moved our booking to Bognor.

We paid extra to have a gold apartment (it was still pretty basic to be fair but it was clean)
We also did self catering because I’m a bit funny about buffets, and we have kids with allergies so I just did a supermarket shop when we got there. We did eat in the Burger King for lunch after swimming, we picked up chips late one night to share and had a meal in one of the restaurants one night. It was nice enough but a bit overpriced for what we got.

Our kids were 6 and 1 last year.
The meeting Father Christmas experience was really special (ds6 still talks about it and says that it was the only time he has met the ‘real’ one and not just a helper like at the garden centres etc 😂)

my kids love swimming so we did an awful lot of that, sometimes numerous times a day. They were always cleaning the changing rooms and they were clean in my experience.
They aren’t that interested in all the shows so we did dip in and out, there was one on in the main stage with billy and Bonny and Father Christmas- it was short and sweet so they enjoyed that one.

They especially loved the fairground rides, the soft play, the Christmas lights everywhere.
They also just loved walking around, the atmosphere and buzz of things going on, Christmas music was playing outside.
There was always an activity or show to go to, to fit around our schedule, so we didn’t have to be regimented too much.

I will be honest and say there were some unsavoury families. Screaming at their kids, or letting their kids run riot, a bit of swearing, the smell of weed drifting around now and then outside. But it was really rare, most people were just normal families from a mix of demographics who just wanted to have a nice time with their kids.

dc has already asked if we can go this year again (which sadly we can’t!)

Up until a few years ago we always went 27-30 Dec at Minehead. I found the gold or standard plus apartments absolutely fine. Staff brilliant. Shows & pool extremely busy so best to plan ahead. Half board food really good. Very Christmassy, if you like that sort of thing 🤣
