Outdoor Decorating for Christmas

Now we are speeding through August my brain has jumped to Christmas already yay !

I love decorating the house for Christmas and have just seen a lovely bay window done up for Christmas on Instagram Smile My question is has anyone ever done anything similar? Any tips and tricks? Or if anyone just would like to share ideas they have previously done would be lovely.

I think I will just hang a little circlet on my outdoor lights (which have gone a little rusty, not artistic, scummy, if anyone has any ideas to improve?)
That red in the planting looks lovely Dozymoo42, any idea what it might be?

Isn't the red bows? Not plants?

I do similar on my bay window and it's fairly sheltered! I'd love to put a photo but anyone who knows my in real life would recognise it 😂

I take a large fake garland for the base and command hook it to the window, I use this as a base for looping in real foliage (from either the woods or by friend who owns a florist) and decorations. For the decorations I just buy the ribbon in the sales the year before and use that to make some large tufts / bows! I love it and it always gets compliments.

NoWordForFluffy -I should have gone to Specsavers!
Lovely colour, though.

I love the red as-well I think it's a mix of bows and ponsiettas

I've previously dressed my bay window with a garland above but definitely love the look around the window instead.

Oooh, I’m liking the bay window idea, we have a large bay and the command hooks would be ideal to keep an outdoor garland in place.

I always make a wreath for the front door and decorate the Christmas tree we have in a pot outside, it’s about 6ft tall now.

I am north facing and sea facing at the front. Any attempts at beautification may well end up draped around the wind turbines, or in Calais.

Purplebunnie · 18/08/2024 17:32

That's really pretty and classy. I have a very small bay window (modern house) but I may be able to do something like this.

Would it be rude to say that made me laugh out loud. And I am sorry it wouldn't work for you.

I am imagining a beautiful view though!

Dozymoo42 I have a nice view - you have to 'get' the sea, though. I think it would drive some people nuts all the greyey green. I love it.

Isthiscorrect You should see us chasing the wheelie bins!

Sounds beautiful! I am very jealous as I live on a main road Smile

@gardenmusic You're making me laugh again. I'm imagining a family running down the road, scarves flapping, children dropping gloves and hats. Branches flying by and the angry sea at the end of the road tossing its waves in the distance.

gardenmusic · 19/08/2024 19:17

Isthiscorrect On a windy autumn/winter day, you are not far wrong!
We are due some wind this week, bet the wheelie bins go over...

Thank you for this thread, I'd love to decorate outside but we can't get power outside to the front easily so have given up in previous years.

I am loving the outdoor garland ideas thank you, will give that a go. Do they stay on the command hooks ok or do you attach with eg florists wire?

Our neighbour has a lovely shrub at the front of the house which they decorate simply with green, red and gold baubles. No lights for same reason as us .Very effective. We don't have anything like that but almost worth buying a suitable shrub for!

A friend posted photos of their winter holiday in the Canaries where poinsettias can be grown outside and the displays on the streets were beautiful. If I can find some reasonable looking fake ones, might add to the pots in our front garden.
