‘Little luxuries’ gifts

Darlinghag · 26/07/2024 09:49

Hi all,

This week has been the week I start to consider Christmas gifts.

Does anyone have their suggestions or favourite gifts that might be considered little luxuries?

Fancy socks? Some kind of food gift? A type of book?

Any type of person, any age, or gender. I would consider anything under £100 reasonable, although for a lot of folks I probably spend £20-£50.

Interested to hear what folks have either given or received that fall in this vein!

Cashmere bedsocks

PenguinCounter · 28/07/2024 01:08

Thanks for reminding me of the BAM socks @Defiantlynot41 They sent me a free pair ages ago and I loved them but I was on a strict budget. They're the nicest socks I've ever had. I've just looked and they have quite a few on sale.

GameOfJones · 30/07/2024 09:57

Consumables are often the answer for "hard to buy for" people! Most people don't want more "stuff"

This is exactly me. I would much rather have a nicer version of a consumable product I use than anything else. Things I really like are:

Mermaid Zest gin. It's my absolute favourite but normally around £40. A beautiful bottle though and a really refreshing gin. Their normal one in the blue bottle is also lovely.

A good quality bottle of wine is always appreciated.

Champneys Calm body balm. It is a really lovely feeling body lotion and smells amazing. The scent really lasts on your skin too. They also do a bath soak in the same range.

I love good quality scented candles.

Posh cheese, chutney, crackers, salt, good quality olive oil etc are things I always ask for.

Superworm24 · 30/07/2024 10:35

Aesops hand wash, I do love cashmere socks although I understand they aren't the most practical, and then any kind of fancy food bits would be a hit with me (olives, preserves, chutneys...)

Darlinghag · 30/07/2024 11:08

Thanks for the latest ideas all, a few have gone on my list to keep an eye out for if they come on offer at all in the next few months, and I will keep the food list on ice for December!

Always happy to hear more.

I had a think back to some of what I got last year, so to throw my own ideas in:

Elemis shave/moisturiser kits went down well with the millenial men in my family.

Snowdonia Cheese gift box - the conpany now sell these on Amazon too!!

Barbour hat and scarf boxed gift set also went down great with a sister and I note these are on sale right now for those looking!

I must be hard to buy for as I'd hate to receive lots of the suggestion on here.

I don't like smelly candles and diffusers.... and lots of them make me sneeze .

Scented moisturisers, hand creams, soaps etc I avoid as I am allergic to so many.

Chocolate is fine, but not boxes of chocolates with fillings or added bits. Just chocolate.

A nice bottle of red wine is always welcome, as is nice blue cheese.

Other presents I have enjoyed, a personalised jigsaw puzzle and a paint by numbers set.

Darlinghag · 30/07/2024 12:02

@Soluckyinlove

i don’t think it makes you any harder than anyone else. I wouldn’t just buy these things for people who wouldn’t want them. They are my friends and family - I know my mother would loathe cashmere socks but she would love a nice shower gel.

I love to hear everyone’s different luxuries ideals!!

I think I'm easy to buy for. I would love:

Neom oils/candles/anything
Other essential oil blends for my diffusers
Clarins perfume/any toiletries, especially Eau Dynamistante
Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream (also love the lip balm, buy me that please)
Any nice gin or gin liqueur - would especially love a locally made one
Nice EVOO or something like truffle oil
Nice crackers
Chutney (even better if home made)
Bag of freshly ground coffee from a local roaster
Don't laugh but if someone bought me a loaf of lovely artisan bread I would love them forever
Ditto a few really lovely pastries from a nice bakery
A friend recently upgraded my cheap umbrella to a much nicer one, that was a fab present
I have too many reusable water bottles and coffee cups now but if I think someone would like one I buy from Sho, they are brilliant, their sports bottles are perfect for the gym

My husband hates "stuff" but likes bamboo socks and stuff he can eat or drink, he usually gets a selection of beers, some decent vodka, lots of sweets etc

Sarvanga24 · 30/07/2024 12:35

To follow on from @StormingNorman recommendations, the F&M 'ossus' biscuits seem to go down well when you want something nice but don't want to spend a fortune. I bought some Cherrilossus for my sister years back (mostly for the lovely tin, great for spaghetti LOL) and she now wants them every year and they are one of her go to 'little something' presents.

Agree with the something to match their favourite perfume - soap or shower gel.

Good gin for those who like it.

Ophy83 · 30/07/2024 16:12

I've thought of something else!

My friend gave me this fig leaf oil last year along with some fancy port vinegar

https://belazu.com/shop-all/extra-virgin-fig-leaf-olive-oil/

It makes the simplest salad taste amazing

Extra Virgin Fig Leaf Olive Oil

Young fig leaves are stone ground alongside Arbequina olives producing a mild grass flavour with a complex almond aroma.

Scout2016 · 30/07/2024 23:10

I'm curious about silk pillowcases and would like to try them.
There are things like a bottle of port / mead or fancy mixed citrus marmalade or honey I appreciate. At Christmas I buy a bottle of a spirit as a treat so someone else buying that would be appreciated.
Books less so as it's often a misfire but a book token yes. Beautiful large books with illustrations by artists I like are a yes too.
Pyjamas yes. Loungewear in general. There's some plain expensive ethical t shirts I want but can't justify the cost of too.
A lovely glass - just one, just for me. I don't need more mugs.

I would also like a decent garlic crusher and good pair of tweezers but that's niche I know!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/08/2024 22:17

I buy a large pot of Lush Kalamazoo for my adult DS. He doesn’t wear fragrances and wouldn’t dream of spending £20 of his own money on beard wash but always asks me to buy it for him

Cyclingmummy1 · 16/08/2024 13:23

Totally agree with the half bottles of champagne, I had a couple as part of my class gift one year and they were great as DH wouldn't choose fizz of any type so I never open a full bottle.

Also like theatre vouchers.

I'll suggest Ringtons as well. I love their hampers.

I have loved this thread for ideas! Of note the half bottle of moet champagne is down to £22 with a nectar card right now & the loccataine shower get is £16 on Amazon

BangingOn · 09/11/2025 10:51

I know this is an old thread but I got some great ideas from it last year and would love to hear some more.

My suggestions for little luxuries that have been well received:
Emma Lacey thumb indent mug
Clothes Doctor knitwear sprays and steamer water
Jonathan Adler cocktail glasses or trinket trays (there’s some bargains in the clearance section of the website at the moment)

Aldi’s brut champagne has just won first in a world champagne competition, it’s around £15.

Sprig1 · 09/11/2025 15:48

Turtle Doves wrist warmers, cashmere bed socks, Lindt little gold bar chocolates (I don't know their real name but they are my favourite and annoyingly hard to find these days).

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 09/11/2025 15:59

If I'm struggling for someone I pop to a local farm shop and buy 'interesting bits' of food - so crisps in unusual flavours, chocolate covered nuts, snazzy cheeses and crackers, etc and make up little hampers. This is particularly enjoyed by the difficult to buy for men in my life as it means they've got nice snacks for when all the Christmas food has been eaten up.

Same.

'Luxury' to me is more likely to be antique items (when stuff was gorgeous and well made out of real wood, crystal, silver etc...) but toiletries... nah.

I already have too many toiletries and I actively clutter, I use a few specific product which work amazing (and aren't expensive).

I'm not a huge chocolate eater and at Christmas I buy the few I like for myself anyway.

I don't drink wine and we have so many that people give us over the years, as for spirits while do might like them I'm a mam of 3 who is constantly guardian of other humans. I drink very infrequently and small amount and usually a ready mix can not a homemade cocktail. I never have time to get shit faced drinking them and its been so long since I have been drunk that it might just kill me.

I'm not into socks, handwarmers, scarfs etc... I hate having extra fussy bits on me. I have a good dressing gown and don't need anymore and prefer just a primark tshirt and leggings (that I can also wear as loungewear and even wear if I have to pop out in an emergency which with my health has happened a few times) to specific PJs.

I think its better to find out what a person likes and buy them something linked to that, everyone has a unique personality but these 'little luxuries' just seem so 'I don't know you so got you a bog standard gift with a fancy brand name'. I mean how many cashmere hand-warmers can a person need even if they liked one pair once?

Darlinghag · 10/11/2025 11:26

Then move on to a different thread?? I like these things, as do many people in my life and I like seeing what other people consider a little luxury - including people like you folks!!

Nice to see this thread back, I am always looking for new suggestions!

my one - gourmet savoury foods. Bought my dads bougie scotch eggs and pork pies from fortnums and a couple of small businesses this year and they were a total HIT!

OP posts:
CatsMother66 · 10/11/2025 11:51

Well I for one love cashmere wrist warmers and currently have about 10 pairs, all different colours. I don’t need them but enjoy coordinating them with my outfits and will happily accept others.

AlpineadventuresandCowbells · 10/11/2025 12:50

@MrsSkylerWhite which one

AlpineadventuresandCowbells · 10/11/2025 13:02

@MrsSkylerWhite found it ! Wow that's one gift down this. You

Moonlightfrog · 10/11/2025 13:10

A nice cheese hamper or small selection of cheese, chutney and crackers.

I quite like hotel chocolate but not the alcohol ones.

I like the cashmere wrist warmers too and I might buy some of these for my mum this year.

Smelly things are wasted on me and beauty products as I have extra sensitive skin and a very sensitive nose.

Bambo socks or nice slipper socks always gratefully received.

Did my personal tastes in luxuries (little house stuff etc... from a bygone era of quality which no one else has mentioned, it might not be the 'common' taste but its MINE) offend you.

My answer is as valid as anyone else here and I can post where ever I like I don't need your permission and on top of that I wasn't even talking to you I was agreeing with another poster (who you weren't so rude too) about those things being wasted on ME (and they are, I get a tonne of random toiletries and repeat items I will never need every from IL etc...).
