How do I make berries?

gardenmusic · 17/06/2024 19:24

I am blessed with plenty of very twiggy twigs in my garden, and I thought that this year I could make some berries to glue/fix/attach to them.
Real berries drop off and squash.
I was thinking red, but I think that yellow-ey orange, or even orange might look ok? Happy to paint them. Don't want leaves, just berries.
Any idea how to make hawthorn size berries? I don't think I could use plasticene, as it would not take paint?
TRhank you in advance!

Fimo? You can shape it and bake it in the oven to harden and even stick wire in it. You could put varnish on it make the berries shiny too

MinnieMountain · 17/06/2024 19:26

Would Fimo work?

Choccyp1g · 17/06/2024 19:26

I suggest red beads, and then you can use florist wire to attach them.

gardenmusic · 17/06/2024 19:34

Well, Fimo is a new one on me, but looks ideal - looks as if there is a nice red one, too.
I did wonder if clay might be a little heavy for the twigs, but it's cheap enough to practice.
Many thanks!

choccy,
Thank you, just googled, and saw some small round buttons that would work.

Fimo and sculpey are very light.

the modern soft versions are easier to work with as they require much less kneading.

The original versions are very hard. I sacrificed a pasta maker back in the day in order to save my hands.

you could also go crazy and buy a 3d filament or resin printer. It’s an addicting hobby. A couple squares of clay will be much cheaper though.

Whatthechicken · 17/06/2024 19:40

I was given the tip of using the wax from mini baby bells, soften and shape.

Cheeesus · 17/06/2024 19:46

Air clay is light and air dries. You can paint it too. It’s not as fragile as normal clay. https://amzn.to/3KNmctX

Pondering, I have the crafting abilities of a gorilla, so think I will try the clay first!
Whatthechicken - what a good idea!

You don't need to go to all the bother of making them.

Rabbit droppings fit the bill the perfectly and being slightly soft can easily be 'speared' onto twigs, their natual earthy aroma enhancing the effect

A spray can of any red car paint (glossy) from Halfords will complete the look.

Two left socks.
I bow down to your superior knowledge of shit.

Alicia, Thank you.
They are pretty, but I was aiming at several long twigs (I am blesssed with these) to drape along shelves and window sills, they would be open and airy, dotted artistically with the odd berry, rather than bunches of berries .
Ideas way above my abilities, I am not artistic.
I have actually seen those sprays of rosehips, and will be buying some

aliciagardner · 17/06/2024 20:32

I know just what you mean, I do the same! You can separate the bunches to individual berries. They each individually wired :)

gardenmusic · 17/06/2024 20:44

Thanks Alicia, I didn't realise that.
I am going to have a go at making my own, but reserving the buttons and ready made, just in case.
(Honestly if you knew me, you'd be snorting by now...)

Good luck! I’m sure it will be fab. Love Christmas crafting.

I love the idea!
I can't wait for the Pontastic thread.

I don't know if you are trying to be funny? The op has a reasonable request in the right section. There's no need for your post.

Op, good luck. 👌I hope your berries turn out lovely.

Genius!!

FishPie2 · 18/06/2024 17:07

Can I ask - does Fimo go out of date, harden and go unusable etc. I have found a new box which I don't know how old it is, maybe 4 years and don't know if I can give it to the Charity Shop without them getting a complaint about it if it sold it on.

gardenmusic · 18/06/2024 17:48

Tomorrow I am buying baby bel - at the weekend I will find some Fimo, and I will report back...
Artificials/ buttons are in reserve.

Loving the twiggy twigs.

I too have these so watching with interest.

Justsewsew · 18/06/2024 18:05

How about felting some?

gardenmusic · 18/06/2024 18:08

SlatternIsMyMiddleName,
I think it may be Birch or Alder, they have tiny cones on them, and the twigs are quite fragile, with lots of 'prongs' - sticky out bits, for attaching said berries.
They are very superior twigs!
Every time it rains, or there is a bit of wind they snap from the trees in the park and end up in my back garden, or in the road, I use a lot with the cones on, but I just fancy some berried twigs.

I love this thread. Babybel wax is genius. Reckon the felted idea is a winner too - they'd look sort of misty and cobwebby. Only on Christmas threads is 'cobwebby' a word.
