How do I make berries?

gardenmusic · 17/06/2024 19:24

I am blessed with plenty of very twiggy twigs in my garden, and I thought that this year I could make some berries to glue/fix/attach to them.
Real berries drop off and squash.
I was thinking red, but I think that yellow-ey orange, or even orange might look ok? Happy to paint them. Don't want leaves, just berries.
Any idea how to make hawthorn size berries? I don't think I could use plasticene, as it would not take paint?
TRhank you in advance!

How about felting some?'

I think that would look lovely, but waaay beyond my abilities.
There is someone on here who has a whole felted nativity. Wow!

@gardenmusic it's honestly really easy but I guess the "equipment" would cost too much if you weren't going to use it again

I don't know if you are trying to be funny? The op has a reasonable request in the right section. There's no need for your post.

Op, good luck. 👌I hope your berries turn out lovely.

Well yes. I was a bit..😕
Sorry if it offended you.

No worries. Maybe it was lost in translation? I just see a lot of people come into the Christmas section and be negative. It's my happy place and want it to stay that way! Xmas Grin

Assuming you want to make them rather than buy artificial ones?

gardenmusic · 18/06/2024 20:21

katepilar,
Yes, I have come over all arty crafty, I have been looking at Pinterest and blogs, and optimism has triumphed over experience!
Starting early with the practicing.

Ooh, you have birch twigs, you could make a usable besom for Halloween. But the twigs would need seasoning for a year, after collecting in early spring.

The berries - like others have posted, Fimo is perfect - light enough to make earrings from.

I'm baffled at the rabbit shit suggestion. They'd fall to bits anyway!

Reporting back on the Baby Bel!
I cannot post a picture (ignorance!) but it looks as if it has worked.
I have a bunch of short twigs with 'berries' pushed on to the prongs, and these are upright in a jar. So far, still holding on, I will let you know what happens in a few days.
If you google 'Janet Clarke At Home' you will see the drapey twiggy thing I am aiming at, and I think I will need the Fimo for that, as the berries will be more vulnerable.
Many thanks for the help.

Reporting back!
My Babybel berries are still hanging on and looking good!
Just spent a happy 15 mins making more, sighing out with bliss...

I will be trying FIMO, because I would like to go a deeper red for the south facing conservatory. Can't do wax in there, because even in winter candles melt.
One christmas I put tall white candles in terracotta pots all along the window sill in there, and within days the candles all had a definite list to one side!
Now if only Babybel came in purple, I could make some sloes.

OP posts:
JayeAshe · 28/06/2024 15:35

Could you maybe use nail varnish to get the right colour for sloes 😁?

gardenmusic · 28/06/2024 15:39

That's a good idea JayeAshe.
For the Fimo? Don't think I could paint the Baby bel.

JayeAshe · 28/06/2024 17:08

If I had some Babybels I would definitely try varnishing one for you ... But sadly there are none here.

gardenmusic · 28/06/2024 17:14

JayeAshe, none here now, either... oops.
Do you live in some Babybel-less country?

OP posts:
JayeAshe · 28/06/2024 17:26

We are a household currently devoid of Babybels 😭 : at least until I go to the supermarket tomorrow 👍

JayeAshe · 28/06/2024 17:28

But in the past I have successfully nail varnished the frames of sunglasses and the straps of sandals ...

gardenmusic · 28/06/2024 17:32

I have sucessfully varnished my verucca!
Abject apologies for all who popped over for a bit of sigh-out Christmassy relaxation.

I don't even like Babybel much, but needs must.

Get yourself a ball of deep red wool and with a length wrap round a pencil. After a few wraps, slide it off and wrap a few more goes but in different directions and it becomes more like a ball. Made loads of these last year

gardenmusic · 28/06/2024 17:47

Gatekeeper.
That's really clever.I'm going to try the Fimo next, as I want to varnish some, but I will hold this in reserve.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 28/06/2024 20:49

Oooh, I will try the red wool idea.

JayeAshe · 29/06/2024 15:54

Et voilà ! Varnished Babybel shells 😂

How do I make berries?
gardenmusic · 29/06/2024 16:08

JayeAshe - Thank you!
i will mould my Babybel shells into sloe shapes and varnish. Sloe coloured varnish - should be plenty around.
The berries I have made are hawthorne size for my twigs. I can get 4 from a shell, they don't need varnishing.
I am going to have to eat a lot of Babybel, as I want lots of twigs, and I'd like some holly berries (varnished).
Wondering if I can do it with Edam wax as I do not usually buy Babybel.
I will report back - I haven't tried Fimo yet, it might be more cost effective!

JayeAshe · 29/06/2024 18:02

You're welcome! Bizarre but fun experiment 😂

BiddyPop · 02/07/2024 18:40

If you try Fimo as an option, you could poke a hole into some before baking so that you can use the florist wire trick above.

Or even get some florist wire to make little "hoops" to poke into the berries before baking that you can then use as hangers for the wire or thread or ribbon later to attach to the branch.

gardenmusic · 02/07/2024 19:58

BiddyPop, Thank you. I have lots of florist's wire, so I will try that.
I have huge aspirations, and will need lots!

Babybel does come in purple wax. It's a cheddar version I think 🤔
