How do I make berries?

gardenmusic · 17/06/2024 19:24

I am blessed with plenty of very twiggy twigs in my garden, and I thought that this year I could make some berries to glue/fix/attach to them.
Real berries drop off and squash.
I was thinking red, but I think that yellow-ey orange, or even orange might look ok? Happy to paint them. Don't want leaves, just berries.
Any idea how to make hawthorn size berries? I don't think I could use plasticene, as it would not take paint?
TRhank you in advance!

Babybel does come in purple wax. It's a cheddar version I think

You would not believe how excited that makes me! I am on the hunt for black wax edam this weekend.
This thread has taken a turn towards the bizarre, but it works!

The purple is the same colour as Beauty Berry or Callicarpa.
Going to have some fun with that.
There seems to be a yellow one, too.

See, this is why we were accused of being witches. We listen and gather random bits of advice through our lives from other women and before you know it, we are experts in remedies and we can even recreate nature throughout the year! Seriously, the baby bell advice was something I just picked up randomly from another woman and then by chance I saw this thread and decided to pass it on. I have no interest in Christmas or crafts, I didn't even know a Christmas thread existed. And I've never tested the Baby bell thing, glad you have though @gardenmusic , and I'm excited for the new wax colours on your behalf! 😂. Women rock don't they!

We certainly do!
The kindness and solidarity - I admit to a little 'Do you think anyone saw us?' When JayeAshe kindly varnished some Babybel for me.

I went and bought the Babybels specially ...

Just wanted to remind anyone doing the Babybel or any other wax berries, it is paraffin wax, and very flamable.
Makes lovely berries, but keep away from candles.

Not just Christmas poncing, but a health and safety message too.

Witchy women who ponce are the best.

gardenmusic · 06/07/2024 09:06

Can't wait until the poncing thread!.September.

OK, I have tried the Fimo and it makes a very nice berry. Thank you.

The wax ones are easier in terms of attachment - just squish them on, the Fimo ones, together with their wire will go into my pretend garland.
I have worked out that I need another 500 hawthorn size red berries (I do a lot of decorating) That's about another 125 mini Babybels I have to eat. I'm game.

I saw a U Tube, where they melted the Babybel wax, made a bacofoil ball and dipped it in. My diet says I should experiment.

Wouldn't be easier to buy some paraffin wax?

gardenmusic · 10/07/2024 19:16

lalanbaba, I have not seen this in red? I will have google

The vegan babybels have green wax. Not that you'd want to make green berries.
And the vegan babybels are not nice.

Some not very useful information on green wax there 😁🌲

gardenmusic · 11/07/2024 07:06

ButIsItArt May not be useful, but fascinating! Where have I been?

Lalanbaba Well! Never crossed my mind, but of course it's obvious. I won't need the kg which is the smallest size. If my berries do not 'keep' for some reason I could try that next year.
I will get someone to photograph my twigs, because although this all sounds a little weird, it's amazing how well it works.

Well now! Just to update you, I have 2 freezer bags full of hawthorn size berries. A mixture of Baby Bel and Edam. I have huge aspirations and will need the same again. This weekend's wind bought down lots of nice twigs, so have more than enough.
I think I will forgo the pretend sloes. My husband is craving exotic cheeses. Tough.

Any chance of a pic?

gardenmusic · 09/09/2024 20:47

I don't have the kind of phone that takes pics (I deny having one at all, but that's another story!)
I will get someone to take a photo. It's amazing how life like it looks in the vase. I am pretty sure the 'branches' will look the same. I will start making those when I decorate for Christmas.
Making the berries leaves a sticky residue on your hands!
