Bored at in laws Christmas

Just wanting to know if anyone out there is in the same boat. I married a nerd and I love him, he can be fun but his family is so boring imo. They just don’t ever let loose at family gatherings. I don’t know if it’s just that I have a crazy alcoholic family but we love getting drunk together at Christmas and just having a laugh. No one takes anything serious in my family. I just find everyone is so serious at in laws and no one ever had more than one or two glasses of wine even on bloody Christmas. All they talk about is sports or topics that I’m not interested in at all. I’ve been counting down the days until Christmas is over. It’s making me question my husband and I compatibility though. Is anyone in the same boat?

my family are the more boring ones and my in laws the party family. I just make sure we spend time at both over the Xmas period, although it's a few days apart as they live far away and try and appreciate both for what they are.

I just sat through "The Masked Singer". I find these types of programmes just so utterly dull. But even Mother in Law was making comments about it being rubbish - so why on earth were we watching it?
It's her house and her telly but if she wasn't enjoying it then just WHY?
Apparently it's because "there's nothing else on....this is it".
There's 200 other channels and an off switch 🙄😂

Yes op. My in laws can't do chat about anything, they generally talk about 4 subjects.
We could be 10 of us around a table and if I don't talk, no one does.

Maybe your husband finds your family drunk and tiresome?

At least you're allowed the telly on. Mine turns it off and sits in front of it with a list of boring shit to talk about. Well I say talk, she's just gossiping about people I don't know. I'm a bit like, erm ok that's nice , now PUT THE MASKED SINGER ON!!!

It sounds like you base your notion of fun around alcohol where your in laws do not. Maybe they find you to be a tedious drunk?

SwedishEdith · 26/12/2023 23:33

I need more information before I can judge properly. What topics do they talk about?

theduchessofspork · 26/12/2023 23:34

Don’t go then. Honestly life is too short, if you don’t like each others families then a day visit is plenty.

tillyandmilly · 26/12/2023 23:36

We don’t all have to get drunk to have a good time! It can happen without alcohol you should try it -

BasinHaircut · 26/12/2023 23:39

I find drunk people incredibly tedious. They tend to think the topics they cover are interesting when it’s generally just re-hashing the same old stories (usually about being drunk) and laughing like they haven’t heard them before.

Maybe if you need to be drunk to be enjoying yourself you are the boring one?

Lavender93 · 26/12/2023 23:48

I feel the same way at my in-laws although it has nothing to do with alcohol. I don’t go there for Christmas anymore.

Howbizzare22 · 26/12/2023 23:52

This is why derogatory jokes about in-laws have been around forever. They’re not your type of people but you feel almost duty bound to spend time with them at Christmas. I guess you have to suck it up a bit OP -they might be very dull but not nasty bastards- could be a whole lot worse! 🤷🏼‍♀️
