How many Christmas presents did you get your kids?

It's 3am. I'm exhausted and I've got a full day of work tomorrow plus a million things to do so obviously I am thinking I absolutely need to find out what other people do.

But genuinely curious. How many presents do you get your kids and how old are they?

Mine are getting about 10 each ( 7 and 3 year old) under the tree and 5-6 in their stocking.

The stocking items are one or two small toys and otherwise chocs and sticker kind of things. The 10 under the tree include books, clothes and craft boxes. There are no big ticket items. I mean none of the presents are more than £20. About 5 of them are from us and the rest from friends and relatives. And they might get a couple more tomorrow from other people.

I really wanted to cut down this year but somehow didn't. Like every other year.

It's silly but I keep seeing stuff that I'd really like them to have though for the older one I have tried to mainly stick to her Christmas wish list. I'll keep one or two back for Easter or their birthdays. And now sleep!!

I try and stick to 4 gifts each plus stocking (small) from Santa. Not using the poem, just 4 seems like a reasonable number. This year all the kids all happen to need new football kits (they all play and have outgrown theirs) so I've wrapped them up as well as a bonus and got personalised ones which I don't normally!

Mindovermatter247 · 24/12/2023 08:40

12 each in thier stocking…..
dd11 has 6 from Santa, 5 from us
ds15 has 4 from Santa (his are far more expensive and he knows they aren’t from Santa but plays along for his sister) and 3 from us.

TooBusyGazingAtStarss · 24/12/2023 08:41

Ive got a 3 & 2 year old and I don't even know how many presents each has.. not counted.
Wrapped all of them up before mid December.
They've got a sack full each and like a big tub each too which will be scattered by their sacks.

Its just stuff I've accumulated over the year for them really and stashed.

First Christmas that the 3 year old has really been bothered about so I wanted to make sure he got his unwrapping thrill x

DC are 19 and 22, at uni

Each have one present that they asked for (DD has trainers, DS has a phone) but both were bought used and the phone is also a birthday present

Then under the tree each of them has a box containing things like a jumper or hoodie, PJs, lava lamp, socks, gloves and a couple of books;

and they each have a stocking with about 12 things in. These include a watch (bought on Vinted), new earrings, a little fidget toy, toiletries, pack of cards, chocolate and sweets. And a Crimpit thanks to MN!

and there’s a shared board game.

1 large present our 3 toddlers have had a smaller 1 each day for the last 5 and our teen has 5..we come from a huge family so ye they will be drowned from all those ones lol

Quornflakegirl · 24/12/2023 08:44

11 year old dds, both have 8 gifts each and a stocking.

Lemonademoney · 24/12/2023 08:46

Three each under the tree and a stocking about 7ish… we have a decent sized family though so they will get another five each from them. If there were less people buying for them we’d probably put more under if that makes sense.

lavenderlou · 24/12/2023 08:50

Too many. I have an 11 and 13 year old and they seem to end up with more than when they were little. I think it's because they make their own lists now. There are lots of clothes which they need anyway and some small bits but I still seem to have spent a fortune. They would be fine if I got them less but I always seem to get nearly everything on their lists.

LifeonMarsnotVenus · 24/12/2023 08:52

Not much apart from sweets and two PS games. He's 14 so doesn't need toys and he has plenty of tech stuff.

He's stopped reading books for pleasure so I won't buy him any until he's older and gets back into reading.

It's just the three of us at Christmas so no presents from extended family as we don't have any. 🤷🏻‍♀️ We also live rurally and don't see many people normally, so he's unlikely to see any school friends until he gets back to school in January. He does message them though.

We plan to visit the nearest City just after NY for a day out.

grendo · 24/12/2023 08:53

DCs 5 and 1. About 10 presents for DC1 and 7 for DC2. Struggled to get as much for DC2 as we already have toys from DC1. They have a stocking each with little cheap bits, and a Christmas Eve box with PJs, book, snacks etc. Each present cost £5-£50, no big ticket items.

Humblechicken · 24/12/2023 08:56

After a couple of years of reigning it in I have gone absolutely over the top this year. They have another 20 stocking presents- loads of small bits like special pens, small teddies and smalls rubix type puzzles. Then about four books/book sets from us, five or six other presents each and about three presents to share. They do also get from 6 or 7 other family/friends who get them between 1-3 presents each. It's too much- mainly from a space perspective at home. Next year will be back to reigning it in, probably around 10 stocking presents, one bigger one from father Christmas and maybe 5-6 presents including books from us. I'm not feeling well mentally this year and am having counselling so I think it's something to do with that. Anyway they will be lucky children tomorrow- as will all of you have chosen presents with your children in mind.

MichonnesBBF · 24/12/2023 08:56

Around 15 each plus stocking with about 4/5 (socks, pants, deodorant).
The stocking also includes cards from family with vouchers/cash inside plus their breakfast...pain au chocolate, 2 pieces of fruit, chocolate coins and a juice box. (They eat breakfast while opening stockings in our bedroom) the one and only time food is allowed upstairs.

HouseNoMore · 24/12/2023 08:59

6 or 7 presents each, and stockings filled with things that are very cheap but exciting to a 5 & 2 year old

Did end up spending more than planned, about £250 each including one expensive joint present

housethatbuiltme · 24/12/2023 09:04

10x Tree presents wrapped under the tree from us

14x Sofa presents delivery (bigger things or things that need building, often secondhand as well so no packaging)

12 Santa Sack (these are just cheap little classic toy though... this year includes harmonica, yoyo, magic crystal tree and magnifying glass etc...)

5 Stocking small novelties (stickers, hair clip, eye mask etc...) and some sweets

So basically 24 'presents' and 17 what people here would call 'stocking fillers'.

We don't buy things throughout the year and birthdays aren't big gifting events either (more about parties and experiences) so this is the main 'getting stuff' day of the year.

SecretSantaHelp · 24/12/2023 09:18

Stocking full of little bits from santa (chocolate coins, mini micro scope etc) & 1 big Santa gift (a doll, so not expensive just won't fit in stocking, what she wrote to Santa for).

Then 11 gifts from mum & dad. Wrapped to make it look like more, so top & skirt that came together wrapped separately. Mostly stuff they need. New woolly hat, new boots.

Nothing individually more than £25. Some bits second hand. Most things under £5-10

sgtmajormum · 24/12/2023 09:20

Teenage boys here 16 & 13
Mine have 2 main big ticket items (total spend £100 each) then a few stocking gifts like lynx, shaving cream etc and Christmas food treats for them: fizzy drinks, pringles, chocs etc. I spend about £150 per child.

Total to unwrap 15 items each.

They usually get money from their dad, my parents and sis and Bil
Nothing from dad's family, never have done.

10yDrama · 24/12/2023 07:56

Haven't and don't count them.

A few little stocking bits in the stocking, basically whatever will fit tonight of the smaller wrapped stuff.

A pile from us under the tree already (maybe 15ish)

Then a similar pile will appear tonight once Santa has been.

This 4 presents thing just isn't how we do it. Neither was it how either DH or I had Christmas as kids.

DH and I each get each other and our parents/family more than 4 each so we wouldn't be giving the kids less than grown ups get.

I'm the same. These threads seem to try and make you feel bad if you buy your kids more than 10 presents, which I certainly do. I've literally lost count, but they're things I know will be used/appreciated. They also each have a very expensive main present but they didn't get one last year so I don't see it as excessive.

StillWantingADog · 24/12/2023 09:25

I wrapped about 20 presents for the kids in total (8 and 10), that includes stocking stuff. But my parents spoil them (only set of grandkids) and brought another 6/7 for each, plus some other family members brought some so overall I think they do pretty well.

no big ticket items. presents are mostly computer games and clothes.

Queenfreak · 24/12/2023 09:25

Probably about 20 tree presents from us, a stocking from santa with 5/6 things in. She will also get stuff from family members. Maybe the same again! There are only 2 kids husbands side, and our DD on my side- everyone goes mad. She does not ever get anything through the year though, only bday and Christmas.

Mine also do lists but one’s list is always much longer than the other so I have to make a deliberate point of NOT gettting everything on his list as, IMO, it’s too long. He knows that now though.

Ibex22 · 24/12/2023 10:10

I tend to go all out at Christmas.

Mine has a stocking with some really nice things, about ten presents plus sweets.

Then a big sack downstairs with probably 25 odd presents. However, 10 or so of these are clothes, trainers etc.

Then another ten or so from family under the tree.

SeamsLegit · 24/12/2023 10:19

14ish from Santa plus fabulous stocking, 2 from parents, then grandparents, aunts, uncles, each other, my friends. I save an amount monthly to spend at Christmas and put a lot of thought into picking a wide variety of gifts. I loveeee Xmas. We don't really buy for adults, only grandparents. I am very fortunate and very grateful 🙏

Why should it make you feel bad? I don't feel bad I have only bought 9 for DD, I could not (said as kindly as I can) care less what you got your DC. If I asked her, she could not come up with umpteen things she wants, I never include things she gets as a standard and I don't buy food, so it is quite self limiting.

Hi. Thank you for sharing. I know comparison is meant to be the thief of joy but it's been really nice and interesting to hear what other people do. Whatever you do it all sounds lovely and very thoughtful. I'm sure there's going to be a lot of very excited kids tomorrow. Happy Christmas everyone. 🎄⛄

Our kids are all adults now. But we budget for £50 each nowadays, but £100 each when they were younger.
