How many Christmas presents did you get your kids?

It's 3am. I'm exhausted and I've got a full day of work tomorrow plus a million things to do so obviously I am thinking I absolutely need to find out what other people do.

But genuinely curious. How many presents do you get your kids and how old are they?

Mine are getting about 10 each ( 7 and 3 year old) under the tree and 5-6 in their stocking.

The stocking items are one or two small toys and otherwise chocs and sticker kind of things. The 10 under the tree include books, clothes and craft boxes. There are no big ticket items. I mean none of the presents are more than £20. About 5 of them are from us and the rest from friends and relatives. And they might get a couple more tomorrow from other people.

I really wanted to cut down this year but somehow didn't. Like every other year.

It's silly but I keep seeing stuff that I'd really like them to have though for the older one I have tried to mainly stick to her Christmas wish list. I'll keep one or two back for Easter or their birthdays. And now sleep!!

4 each, plus stockings which traditionally (for us) include chocolate, bath bombs, and toothbrushes.

But they are going to their dad's today and will probably get loads more there, or at least big ticket items. I try to keep Christmas a bit more low-key and don't compete with him.

Peepshowcreepshow · 24/12/2023 07:37

6 things in her stocking and 3 other presents. She won't get any other presents, though GPS will give money. This is a fairly standard number of things for her.

Indeedindeed24 · 24/12/2023 07:39

Stocking from Father Christmas plus a present waiting at the end of the bed. Then about 9 presents under the tree from us, plus 3 from family and Godparents and then my mum and dad will bring a few little things. I always want to cut down but then see more things I think she would like, I've managed to hold back though. DD is 4.

DoorPath · 24/12/2023 07:40

Ours are getting 8 each from Santa (none from us) plus a stocking from Santa (with 10 small gifts each). Nothing comes from us, all from Santa. They will have received some gifts from grandparents, etc., which they will open on Christmas Eve (today!)

It was originally 10 but I'm useless and have already given him two of the bigger items over the last month. He's 2 and we have a 4 week old newborn baby so I've had times where I just wanted to distract him with something new and exciting so I could keep everyone happy. The baby just got 2 small presents from santa wrapped under the tree, mainly for the toddlers benefit.

That's not useless.

2 year olds don't understand the concept of Christmas and their birthday, so giving him something to unwrap on random days on the weeks around it doesn't over whelm him.

Next year though you will have to start doing it differently.

Elpheba · 24/12/2023 07:42

My DC have got 5 presents to unwrap from us and a stocking plus a joint gift that will be in the living room when they wake up- think toy kitchen sort of thing.
They get A LOT from wider family, grandparents, aunts, friends etc though so I have to work really hard on keeping it minimal at home as I know they get lots from elsewhere. It’s hard though as I don’t want to miss out on the fun of buying them what they’ll love!

Bellyfat · 24/12/2023 07:47

14yr old daughter - a main present, 4 significant presents that didn't cost a fortune but will be things that she loves and then 10-15 little things that will be in her stocking or under the tree.

I find it so much easier now she's older that there's no more separate Santa and parent gifts.

SouthLondonMum22 · 24/12/2023 07:50

He turned 1 at the start of the month and has 10-15 things from us, a stocking and lots from family too. I imagine we'll still be opening things on boxing day and beyond! 😂

Stocking is just little things such as bubbles, bath toy, choc coins, book etc.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 24/12/2023 07:55

Oh here with go with the little boasts coming through. You do you and don’t worry about what anyone else is doing.

10yDrama · 24/12/2023 07:56

Haven't and don't count them.

A few little stocking bits in the stocking, basically whatever will fit tonight of the smaller wrapped stuff.

A pile from us under the tree already (maybe 15ish)

Then a similar pile will appear tonight once Santa has been.

This 4 presents thing just isn't how we do it. Neither was it how either DH or I had Christmas as kids.

DH and I each get each other and our parents/family more than 4 each so we wouldn't be giving the kids less than grown ups get.

NeverAloneNeverAgain · 24/12/2023 07:58

We have a set amount of money for each so the number of prezzies varies between the 4 of them. As they got older the number of gifts got smaller as they wanted more expensive things but they're old enough to understand this (12yrs/17yrs/19yrs). The only difference is our 12month old who we have bought a few things for and what's left out of his budget goes in his jnr isa.

Same every year:

  • 10 stocking gifts each
  • 4 under the tree: one book, one outfit, one fun thing they really want and one experience (eg tickets to a football match, a play, a concert).
  • on Christmas Eve they have PJs and hot chocolate balls from the elves that appear in the fireplace while we are at church.
Sunriseandcoffee · 24/12/2023 08:05

I will give my DS (6) a Christmas Eve box this evening. There is a pair of festive pjs & 2 Christmas books (Mog's Christmas and Polar Express) in it.

Tomorrow he will have a stocking with about 5 wrapped things (a joke book, a TapTap, a Space wallet.. a couple of other things I can't remember) in it + a large chocolate coin, tube of Smarties & an easy peeler.

He'll have presents under the tree from grandparents & uncles/aunts/cousins who we aren't seeing on the 25th, as well as approx 10 presents of varying value from Father Christmas under the tree.

Cheepcheepcheep · 24/12/2023 08:06

Have 3yo DD and 19mo DS.

Both have a stocking each with 10 presents in. Spent about £25 per stocking.

Then under the tree: one present each from ‘mummy and daddy’ to the tune of about £25 each. And then 4 presents each from Father Christmas under the tree - covering about £75 each.

That does include stuff they need though, 19mo’s present from us is new shoes, DD’s stocking includes hair grips and ties etc.

Edit to add: oh they both also have a Xmas Eve box from us with a new pair of PJs each and a book for tonight - again probably about £15 each on that.

Lastminutebride · 24/12/2023 08:08

Too many. Every year I think I should cut down but I love buying things I know they’ll enjoy.

Desecratedcoconut · 24/12/2023 08:09

I don't know, they're all stuffed around the house like a weird scavenger hunt from about October onwards. I think about 6/7 but could be more - I don't try and keep it even or anything like that, I just aim for a nice bunch for the three of them.

Upsadiddles · 24/12/2023 08:10

Mine have one gift each from Santa Claus, plus a small stocking which is full of inexpensive things like sweets, pens, a card game etc. They then have 6 presents each from us which includes an outfit, books, pjs and 3 x toys/games. I have no idea how many they’ll have to open from extended family - there’s 3 sets of grandparents plus aunts and uncles who are all very generous. They are very lucky! Thankfully they don’t get overwhelmed by it all like some do, but when asked I have suggested experiences/additions to toys they already have to try and limit the amount of stuff to find homes for.

Spirael · 24/12/2023 08:11

I have 2 DDs, 9 and 13. Under the tree they each have 1 big present from one set of grandparents, DH and me. They also have 1 present each from their sister.

They've got various smaller gifts under the tree from family and family friends too. Probably another 8-10 gifts each, which are likely to be books, small toys, or hobby items from their wish lists.

They then have 10-15 stocking fillers each, which are a mix of useful things, silly things, hobby things, fun things, and tasty things.

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 24/12/2023 08:12

2 each plus a stocking. I’m divorced so their dad also got stuff I spent £200 each give or take.

MsMcGonagall · 24/12/2023 08:19

Taking a risk:
1 big ticket for DS (computer)
5 not big ticket things for DD

A risk because it isn't an equal "unwrapping" experience - either way you could spin it that the other got "more"

wildeflowers · 24/12/2023 08:25

That's more than enough. Honestly I think it's more important to raise children who appreciate and recipricate well. I spent a Christmas a few years ago with a former friend, and I was absolutely shocked at her kids' behavior. She got them very expensive items and a lot of them, and they literally yelled at her that she didn't get the correct style of Nike or whatever, threw them down, didn't come back and get them later, then the next day they demanded to be taken to the store to return their presents and get what they really wanted. There wasn't one single item they were happy with. There wasn't one single thank you or smile. When I opened my presents from my friend I was so genuinely happy because the gifts were so nice and just my style, a pair of Beats headphones and a gorgous bracelet- I still have them. I said thank you and showed my appreciation. Everyone, including my friend, looked at me like I was an alien. It was so awkward. I wasn't supposed to feel glad I guess? Meanwhile I can get my kids 100 gifts or just 1 and they act like it's the best day of their lives. One year I remember my DD seemed stressed because she got everything she asked for. Apparently it was too much. She asked for a lot less after that. So yeah I don't think it really matters as long as everyone is happy.

evryevrytime · 24/12/2023 08:25

DC are 5 and 2. They are getting two presents each under the tree and stockings with wrapped presents in. I'd say we have spent about £60 on each of them. They'll get more from grandparents so that feels like enough.

Airdustmoon · 24/12/2023 08:27

DS8 has 4 presents under the tree from us. 2 big (large Lego set and tickets to an experience) and 2 small (book and a Switch game). Then he has a stocking from FC with probably about 15-20 presents in it, ranging from chocolate coins, a tube of smarties, a packet of candy canes to bath bombs, PJs and a beanie hat. Most expensive item in the stocking is probably about £15, most are around £5-£7.

DS also gets presents spread across Christmas Day and Boxing Day from 2x sets of GPs, 5x aunties/uncles and 1x godparent so he has more than enough!!

Curlygirli · 24/12/2023 08:28

DD 20 has a gift voucher for her favourite clothes shop and a stocking,
with lipglosses, socks, skincare and a bathbomb. DS 4, has 6 presents and a stocking with socks, chocolate bomb, and a bathbomb. I learnt from DD not to go over the top with presents as extended family buy so much, it gets very overwhelming! I also wrapped as I brought the gifts.
