Don't panic this isn't a Christmas present but seen as you guys come up with the best ideas thought I'd ask.

Whoops, hit send too soon. In all honestly, tempting as it is to think you need loads of stuff to go travelling, the reality is the less the better. (Although it does depend a lot on the destination). A few clothes and toiletries. Phone, decent camera, charger. Passport. Suncream.

The reason I said money was that every time I've been travelling, what I've been most grateful for is money which I've been able to put towards specific experiences that I wouldn't otherwise have been able to afford. So the money hasn't gone into a random pit and been swallowed up, but Aunt Bessie bought me a meal in xx restaurant, Uncle Bob paid for xx scenic train ride and so on.

chipsandpeas · 23/12/2023 20:57

currency of where they are going

Santaiswashinghissleigh · 23/12/2023 20:58

Personal alarm

ToriTheStoryteller · 23/12/2023 21:01

Compass. Do people even use them these days? I'd love one anyway!
Reusable squashable coffee cup.
Padlock (if they will be staying in hostels with lockers).
Mini hairdryer.
Solar powered charger for phone.

Are they are backpacking on a shoestring or hiring a luxury motorhome? My ideas might be rubbish!

Theimpossiblegirl · 23/12/2023 21:02

A dock and bay towel.
P20 suncream.
Luggage cubes.
Currency.
Kindle.
Good but small shampoo and conditioner.

These are the things I've got dd for Christmas and she's off on the 27th.

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 23/12/2023 21:03

Packing cubes are the greatest invention ever!

A kit of things you don't realise you need, safety pins, plasters, pain killers, command hooks for hanging mosquitto nets or towels up. Eye mask and ear plugs. Power banks are useful. Increase their cloud storage for all the photos?

If you know where they're going and have the money a voucher for an experience where they're going sky diving/bungy jumping/afternoon tea/whatever floats their boat.

My other travel essential are good noise cancelling headphones. I have bose wireless ones and they are a life saver!

There's this really cool portable phone charger my sister has which has built in cables - just short ones that fit flush that fit most phones. We are visiting her and both my (18 and 20) kids and me have asked her where she got it! And Amazon is the answer!

timtam23 · 23/12/2023 21:27

If they're going somewhere cold - a headtorch beanie. I bought one recently and it's my new favourite thing. The little torch is removable for washing the hat and has a UCB port for charging

autienotnaughty · 23/12/2023 21:33

I got my dd and her bf -

Light weight towels
Filter water bottle
Portable phone charger
Plug adapter
Pack of cards

This, or a really good eyemask and noise cancelling earplugs. A mini padlock.

One of those colourful straps that you put on your suitcase so you recognise it's yours at the airport. They are so helpful!!

Riverlee · 23/12/2023 23:07

A bath plug - suggested by Michael Palin on one of his round the world tours.

summerlovingvibes · 23/12/2023 23:12

If they're actually travelling travelling (hostels etc rather than nice hotels) then a silk sleeping bag liner. Light weight and a god saver for when you go somewhere that you'd rather not sleep in the sheets. I've used mine loads in the past - places like overnight trains with horrible looking beds etc

ToriTheStoryteller · 23/12/2023 23:24

If they are hostelling, some bags that don't rustle. I once threw a shoe at someone who was packing at about 4am to catch a coach and she had about 20 carrier bags in her rucksack.

Could save the person you are buying for being the most hated person in the dorm. 😂

Do you have a link for that?

Phone battery pack obvs

Many many years ago when I was going travelling my best friend bought me a silver necklace on a leather chain (it was the 90s) with the Norse sign for safe travels on it.

Many years later and she is my DS's godmother and he now wears the pendant (but on a new chain).

I guess it was the perfect present nearly 30 years ago
