I usually have them late afternoon but don't know if I have it in me to have the elf do another stunt tonight!
Other option is sneak it out before our beach walk so it's their when the dc get home.

We do ours after dinner, we go for a drive to look at Christmas lights and I leave it so he finds it when we get back. It's always pyjamas, a christmas teddy, a christmas themed book and a bath bomb, all things to help make him more enthusiastic about bedtime. I've never done elf on the shelf though, is it traditional for the elf to bring the box?

I’m going to give my children their Xmas eve boxes after dinner: pyjamas, bath bomb, cosy socks, book and chocolate treat.

We do them about an hour before bed as its all wind down stuff for bedtime (supper, hot chocolate, toothbrush, PJs & book)

(Mine are 21 and 24 so this was a while ago Xmas Grin )

We used to go out after lunch to have a roam about , either feeding reindeer (local visitor centre where they could buy little bags of suitable food) or a local lake .

I put the boxes in front of the fire while DH got them in the car ( I went to "check the back door is locked " )

They got home after dark , tired but happy , wanting to have their baths , new pyjamas , drink , biscuits and relax.

I did do an Elf (one I made) but he just hid , he didn't bring things .

Hour before bed- they are all about winding down in our house.
