Help choosing gift for friend - I'm overthinking this

Epically overthinking a gift for a friend!

Background:

Relatively new friend, got to know her as she instructs a fitness class I go to, but we're pretty good friends now (chatting, dinner, drinks, etc) AND she's had a pretty tough couple of weeks.

Loves tea, chocolate, living with in laws for the foreseeable

Options:

Nice mug (a Sara Miller one) with M & S selection boxes (1chocs, 1 biscuits)
OR
fancy diffuser (I know she likes nice smelling things, but not sure she'd be comfortable using them in someone else's space)

Logically I'm thinking the mug and consumables, but can someone reassure me it's an ok gift and not a cop-out to give selection boxes?

Sorry, I overthink massively when it's people I really want to like their gift. Not fussed if she gets me anything, I just want her to know that there are people who care and she's been really sweet to me

For a new friend that’s a lovely gift. Especially as she’s staying with her in laws and getting something, space invading is out of the question.

I also enjoy tea and chocolate, I’d be happy to receive that and thankful that someone had thought of me.

You seem very kind and I’m sure she’ll appreciate the gesture.

I love receiving mugs.

I've also done a few Secret Santa gifts with a Christmas Mug/Initial Mug filled with mini chocolate lindts, candy canes & hot chocolate sachets. Simple but cute & very well received

100% do the mug/chocolate idea

Mugs are great. It's a little thing that's definitely hers in a house she doesn't own. If you know her month of birth get her one of those ones that says how brilliant e.g. women born in September are. Or the Literary Gift company if she likes word jokes. I like those Monty Bojangles truffle tins too.

Thank you so much - definitely going with mug and choc selections then. I was overthinking it!

Quick update: i went with the mug and chocs, which was definitely the right call 😊 sue mentioned that someone else had given her a diffuser but she doesn't feel comfortable using it in case the in laws don't like the smell.

So thank you all so much!
