What have you got for your dad?

I'm trying to find something to add to my dad's gifts - hot water bottle and hot chocolate selection atm. Have been considering a decent travel mug (he likes to go to a local ish park for a walk & pops in the cafe for a cuppa to drink on his walk).

I'm not really coming up with much else 🙈 he tends to buy what he wants but put back the hot water bottle he was going to buy the other week, and wouldn't buy himself fancier hot chocolates.

What have you all got your dad? Maybe something will inspire me 🤔 I did see someone mention pine cones that light up different colours when burned, that I might get for his log burner 🤷‍♀️

Voucher for a fancy butcher in town, wine and a heated bodywarmer

RosaElize · 20/12/2023 19:10

I lost my dad back in 2018 when he was 57, he was a bloody nightmare to buy for really and I would rack my brains every year… one year I bought him a grey cashmere scarf and a little framed illustration of the london skyline. If i was seeing him this Christmas, I like to imagine i’d get him a bottle of fantastic whiskey from the hebrides and a picture of us both in an oak frame ❤️

A politician’s memoir and a pair of hiking socks. Not exactly original!

Itsbeginningtolookalotlike · 20/12/2023 19:14

My dad is in his 80s and always freezing so I've got him some heat tech thermals from Uniqlo. And some tisserand oil for his diffuser.

lucysmam · 20/12/2023 20:44

@RosaElize I did consider whiskey but not sure he'd appreciate it these days, he doesn't tend to drink often any more. Did your dad like one in particular?

Thermals may be a good shout! I'll have a look on Friday when I nip to town with dd1.

A couple of books from Francis Frith of his home town and county. He's in his 90s and has dementia - I bought him two (different ones) last Christmas and he's really enjoyed looking at them.

My DF is a very keen cook so I’ve made him a hamper of unusual ingredients that he will enjoy experimenting with and trying out new recipes.

tealgate · 20/12/2023 20:48

Two lightweight wraps/blankets that he can have by his chair or in bed. From Home Sense so not expensive, just cosy

We got my husband’s dad an monogrammed leather notebook this year. But probably no time for that.

Any kind of garden stuff?

rainbowbee · 20/12/2023 21:04

My dad said he didn't want anything. Then he came and showed me a hole in his slippers... I also got him a particular knife sharpener and whiskey stones as (I own both) he's questioned what they're like. I think my sister is getting him some houseplant stuff as he got quite into them in the pandemic.

lucysmam · 20/12/2023 21:04

Maybe @Tulipvase, he does enjoy his garden! However, last time we went for a wander at one of the local garden centres, he mentioned he's over-run with plants to actually put in the ground & I'm not sure what else would be useful?

I got mine a hand trowel and hand fork for the garden, a canvas print of my kids, a bottle of brandy and some chocolates he likes.

Your gifts sound so lovely and thoughtful- he'll be thrilled x

Tulipvase · 20/12/2023 21:12

What about one of those Japanese multi purpose garden tools? We got one of those last year. I can’t think of the name at the moment - maybe a hori hori? Hope that’s not rude lol

Good badger shaving brush, soap and other bits

Peepshowcreepshow · 20/12/2023 21:16

Afternoon tea. He'll be pleased about the tea, delighted he can wear a suit and tie.

DGPP · 20/12/2023 21:16

Nice chocolates, whisky miniature bottle set, slippers, a book, a heated blanket, a voucher?

StaceysDaughter · 20/12/2023 21:17

Crocs for pottering about in

Frostythereindeer · 20/12/2023 21:21

A bracelet with magnets on the inside which are supposed to help with certain health issues and stress.

backbritishfarming · 20/12/2023 21:34

I used to struggle for my dad too, usually it was a nice brushed cotton country style shirt. For his last Christmas (he was really really poorly) I got a wooden crate, used DH burner tool thing and personalised it and filled it with country/wildlife and gardening mags, a new lovely mug, lots of bird food, bird feed, bird house... you get the idea. It sounds naff but it was really lovely when finished and he was over the moon with it.

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 20/12/2023 21:37

Cook vouchers. We gave those last year and he loved it so much he asked for them again this year

itsalwaysthesame · 20/12/2023 21:38

A bottle of whiskey (nice one), dried fruit & nut mix (posh one), and a quality non stick frying pan! (He buys cheap ones then complains he can't fry eggs as they stick to the pan) 🤣

upthewallmumof3 · 20/12/2023 21:38

My dad hasn't been too well the last few weeks and can't get warm, so I bought him a heated throw he can use in his chair or in bed. Also ordered him a lumbar heat pack but think I might send that back!
I also usually get us tickets to see a show and take him for a meal, he loves making memories instead of material things xxx

RandomUsernameHere · 20/12/2023 21:39

Mine is impossible to buy for! This year I've got him a nice soap selection and some nuts. He doesn't want any more "stuff" and doesn't need anything so I went for something consumable. Was thinking of getting him a thermal jumper but he is very particular about clothes!

itsalwaysthesame · 20/12/2023 21:39

Oh and some grippers as his knees are stiff and bending down becoming painful for him

LyndaSnellsSniff · 20/12/2023 22:20

My dad is recovering from a major op so I got him some lovely cashmere socks, a book called (I think) Nature Takes For Winter Evenings and some gorgeous, expensive hot chocolate. I was thinking comfort, rest and recuperation!
