What have you got for your dad?

I'm trying to find something to add to my dad's gifts - hot water bottle and hot chocolate selection atm. Have been considering a decent travel mug (he likes to go to a local ish park for a walk & pops in the cafe for a cuppa to drink on his walk).

I'm not really coming up with much else 🙈 he tends to buy what he wants but put back the hot water bottle he was going to buy the other week, and wouldn't buy himself fancier hot chocolates.

What have you all got your dad? Maybe something will inspire me 🤔 I did see someone mention pine cones that light up different colours when burned, that I might get for his log burner 🤷‍♀️

Rain gauge
Guinness Book of Records ( have got him one ever year since I was about 11)
90% dark chocolate

A stoov cushion, liquorice allsorts, phone/kindle/ipad cables, Babedas and a jumper.

He's also had a new hoover from me early.

Maybe @Tulipvase, he does enjoy his garden! However, last time we went for a wander at one of the local garden centres, he mentioned he's over-run with plants to actually put in the ground & I'm not sure what else would be useful?

Extra long handle tools, to save on bending down so far.

I've got mine cinema vouchers, a puzzle book of a particular type of puzzle that he enjoys, some hand warmer things that you can put in your pockets when out walking, and some chocolates.

My dad is a banjo player and is at the stage of early Alzheimer's where he likes to sit and endlessly tinker with the bits in his pockets/bag, getting things out and putting them back in etc. So I've bought him a wooden box with a gorgeous Celtic design carved into it, into which I will put lots of little bits individually wrapped in musical note- printed tissue paper; banjo strings, picks, capo, tuning pipes etc. I've also got him a leather ring binder with a gold treble clef embossed on it, which I've filled with large-print versions of all the songs he sings (he and I were in a band together for years) and an antique green glass tankard with a ship etched on it, a t shirt and some silly socks.

That Murdle book - logic puzzles in the style of mysteries to solve.
A jigsaw (we got him a jigsaw mat a couple of years back because he loves them)
Brian Bilston's book of 366 daily poems.
His favourite sweets (liquorice allsorts)

Previous years:
a raised garden planter so he could grow veg without having to bend down
a selection of seeds
a vegetable patch advice book
a bird feeder full of aplaca wool (for nesting - it was a big hit with his garden birds)
a bird watching guide
a bonsai and tools/fertiliser
Audible subscription
cashmere jumper (god bless the bargains thread on here and a JL bargain)
thick wool socks and sheepskin slippers
a fruit tree in a big pot of a variuety he had ibn his garden as a kid
magazine subscription (New Scientist)

Pajamas and a sweater
boring but he’ll use them!

inappropriateraspberry · 21/12/2023 17:43

I had a brainwave this morning. A new dictionary. The one he has is falling apart, and he does the puzzles every day in the Daily Mail 😬, so it gets a lot of use!
Maybe next year I can get him a reference book of some sort - do they still print Pears cyclopedias?

My dads getting:
Pjs (that’s what he asked for)
A Toblerone
A 1kg bag of Wherther’s Originals
Record Coasters
A LUSH soap
An Ant & Dec book
A framed postcard of something related to a sports team he supports

lucysmam · 21/12/2023 21:17

Oh! Pj's might go down well actually! Will try Next tomorrow and see what they have.

I've also seen the Murdle book recommended several times & think I looked at it in Waterstones last weekend so will have another look tomorrow.

The hori hori tool looks interesting too, is there a particular one any of you would recommend (probably from Amazon now - I doubt I'll find one in town!).

I've got mine a selection of 12 bottles of beer from my local brewery, and a pair of wellies (he asked for those).

helpme5 · 21/12/2023 22:22

Selection of Molton Brown stuff. He stays over Christmas so I get in all his favourite food/drink too.

Rina66 · 21/12/2023 22:51

Always whiskey and a sports book this years additions are some slipper socks and a neck warmer.
He loved last years huge Oodie.
A selection of individual beers which I do him a marking page to go with, he loves writing about his lunchtime beer and marking it out of 10.
An Alexa as it makes switching between radio stations easy and he gets her to play his favourite songs.
He also loves to google on his iPad.
He likes magazine subscriptions, enjoys it coming every month.
A round head shaver thing.
A water bottle with an inbuilt straw.
