Accidentally spoiled my surprise :-(

I was rounding up laundry this evening. DS2 said he had a shirt in his school bag which was downstairs. He was busy upstairs so I said I'd retrieve it.
While doing so I came across a bottle of shampoo and conditioner. I thought it was either something he'd received as Secret Santa from a friend or that he'd offered to carry it home for his older brother who is home for Xmas.
I took it out and asked him about it, whereupon I was told it was my Christmas present.
I felt sad - for him, because he'd chosen something for me and sad for me, because I don't get many surprises on Xmas day.
He'd obviously forgotten they were in there.

It's just me and my boys and when they were smaller no one helped pick a gift for me, when they were able and sort of willing it was all a bit hit and miss (bless them) and now they're older it's nice that we all appreciate the art of giving and receiving.

It's nothing fancy - tenner from Boots for both of them, but chosen with care and I told him how much it meant to me.

Anyway, we decided that I would buy them from him, and that if he's up to doing a bit more shopping I'd really love it if he could pick me out something to open on the day.

Ah it sounds like you handled it really well though, he knows how grateful you are but also gets a second go at surprising you.

MulledWineBeMine · 19/12/2023 23:32

That's a shame, but a good compromise.

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/12/2023 23:34

Inspired rescue.

Merry Christmas.

Jellybean23 · 19/12/2023 23:40

You've made amends in the best way possible. And son had learned to be be more furtive to keep pressies a surprise. What kind and thoughtful boys you have.

CarrieMoonbeams · 19/12/2023 23:45

Aww bless him, what a lovely lad. It sounds like you rescued the situation really well.

Happy Christmas 🎁

LaviniasBigBloomers · 19/12/2023 23:47

You sound lovely, as do your boys, and that is an inspired save that I will definitely tuck away for the future. Merry Christmas and I hope you get a lovely wee surprise on Christmas Day.

Theraffarian · 20/12/2023 08:32

Bloody excellent save to be honest , and may have bought an odd sheen to my eyes .

LubaLuca · 20/12/2023 08:35

That's made me feel a bit tearful, I don't know why. What a lovely thing for him to do.

Good result though, he'll be chuffed that he picked something good and gets the chance to do it again 😊

cantbecaught · 20/12/2023 08:39

This is a lovely thread. Don't feel sad - he sounds so lovely and thoughtful, and so do you, rescuing the situation for him. That was a great idea. I absolutely love the love in this little story. Treasure it and don't feel sad as you've turned it round so well. I hope you both have a gorgeous Christmas.

Marblessolveeverything · 20/12/2023 08:40

What a present seeing gratitude, thoughtfulness and generosity in your son. Well done mum, isn't it wonderful to hear of a lovely young man.

TidyDancer · 20/12/2023 08:43

Oh that's very sweet of him! And a great idea to buy them from him, well done on handling that brilliantly!

Motnight · 20/12/2023 08:52

Brilliant idea to buy them from him, Op!

a222 · 20/12/2023 09:11

Such lovely responses, thank you. You've given me a real boost at a time when I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with everything.

Awww. How lovely is he?

It's just me and 12 year old DD at home. She's had my presents wrapped since August, and I'm under strict instructions not to get up on Christmas morning until she has brought me a cup of tea!

Gawd bless 'em. Hope you have a lovely Christmas. OP.

CharlotteBog · 21/12/2023 09:45

@RainbowZebraWarrior your DD sounds like such a lovely, thoughtful girl.
I am still working on mine making me a cup of tea in the morning. I've told them many times that this small act makes me much more amenable!

I agree with a previous poster than this made me well up! What a lovely boy you have brought up , you should be proud. Finding it was all an accident and a lovely save. Have a great Christmas together x

cantbecaught · 23/12/2023 11:32

Rainbowzebrawarrior that is another gorgeous story. So sweet.

So glad you're feeling bright now OP, wishing you all a wonderful Christmas.

Mirabai · 23/12/2023 12:01

Why wouldn’t you just say you’d forget about them until Christmas Day and will look forward to “opening” them then?

I think it’s bizarre to “buy” the present and ask him to get you something else - I very much doubt that idea came from him.

Adults don’t need surprises on Christmas Day.

LakeTiticaca · 23/12/2023 12:06

Ah bless him, what a lovely thoughtful young man you have raised 😍
