Token (?) gift for a man I've been seeing for a few weeks

Gah! I've been seeing a lovely man since the end of October. It's going really well and hopefully there's a future there. So I think I need to get him something for Christmas, but think a token present is probably the most appropriate - but what?

I don't want it to be too dull, or to be spending too much on him (as I have only known him (not even) 2 months.

Does he read? Id always go for a book, or buy you both tickets for something you've been talking about seeing.

DoYouAgree · 18/12/2023 08:13

If he drinks then a higher quality spirit of something he drinks like a premium gin or rum of some sort?

Or fancy coffee, nice biscuits and a good travel mug.

It's really hard

I wouldn't want to commit to tickets for something in the future in the early days. But maybe something like a hotel stay or evening spa scheduled for the next couple of weeks then you get to benefit as well and if it all goes wrong (which I'm sure it won't) you can still just go on your own or with a friend!

My DB really enjoys the EXIT escape room games. They’re about £15.

AutumnBride · 18/12/2023 10:02

I assume he knows the plan is for token gifts ?

givemushypeasachance · 18/12/2023 11:03

I would go for something consumable. The drinks suggestion is good, or if you know he likes a particular food something linked to that. Or if he's mentioned something he enjoys doing can you link a gift to that hobby/activity/interest?

You'd want to aim a bit more personalised than "I need to buy a gift for an X year old man total stranger I don't know" level, but you aren't expected to be able to intuitively get someone a perfectly matched to them gift in the same way as if you've been married to them for five years.

Throthetowelin · 18/12/2023 11:04

What does he like?

Jessforless · 18/12/2023 11:06

I would also do something like tickets, but doesn’t need to be a surprise, then you’ll know you’re both on the same page?

Avacardo2023 · 18/12/2023 11:22

I think I'd go for a bottle of the aftershave he wears or bottle of whatever drink he enjoys - both thoughtful enough without being too much.

ReviewingTheSituation · 18/12/2023 11:26

What's your budget? A bottle of decent spirits (mentioned up thread) would be £40, tickets probably more, but a book would be £8-£15. Quite a variance! Clearly people's definition of 'token' is different. But without knowing what it means to you, and roughly what you're thinking of spending, it's hard to give ideas.

For me a token gift would be under £20, so would be along the lines of a book, or maybe a hat (if he wears them), or something consumable.

anyolddinosaur · 18/12/2023 11:52

You presumably know something about him- and we dont. So all suggestions will be "dull". Scarf or gloves (if he wears either) in a bland plain colour. Some food you know he likes - cheeseboard or smoked salmon if you can gift it when it'll be refrigerated. Gift voucher for tickets to a cinema. Bottle of decent wine.

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/12/2023 11:53

Book or take him out for dinner?

clpsmum · 18/12/2023 11:54

What is your budget for a token gift?

Hibernatalie · 18/12/2023 12:14

Book, booze or tickets to do something together.

Donnaloveskebabs · 18/12/2023 12:16

Cheese.
10 years in and my other half wants and gets cheese for all birthdays and Christmases.

ThickPinkSocks · 18/12/2023 12:18

Chocolate or beer

MonikerBing · 18/12/2023 12:43

I think token is under £30 for me.

I already have tickets for something on the 28th although he knows about those already and it's something I want to go to anyway.

Yes we discussed and agreed on token. Last I heard he was making me something (!) Then again, he also suggested I could buy him a jumper. And that isn't very token in my mind.

I think cheese is a good idea. Coffee too as he does like that. I was thinking of a travel mug too - early on in the dating process, I went for a walk with him, and he brought a flask of coffee and a normal mug.

If he's a coffee lover then coffee is a good idea. My DH has a nice bean to cup machine and loves trying new beans. There are lots of coffee subscriptions out there, so that might be nice.

yarnwitch · 18/12/2023 16:49

I would go with a jumper if that's what he's suggested. You could get a nice one from somewhere like Next for around £25 then just put a little something with it like some chocolates.

WombatBombat · 18/12/2023 23:05

My DH loves his Chillys travel mug.

Fern86 · 18/12/2023 23:07

My first ever Christmas gift to my now DH was a Batman key ring that lights up 😂 it was £5, quite expensive for a key ring! 😆

determinedtomakethiswork · 19/12/2023 00:33

Oh, I have just bought my daughter-in-law one of those!

MonikerBing · 19/12/2023 07:20

I think the travel mug and some coffee. I was looking at socks too but I've realised I have no idea what socks he wears!

I would love him to wear different jumpers (he seems to have a penchant for polo necks Hmm ) but maybe that's a longer term aim

I know his daughter is getting him some booze that he's asked for, so I'll steer clear of that.

Why not get him a jumper if he's suggested one though? There are loads on the John Lewis website for under £30. I like coffee too but would be so disappointed to open it for Christmas.

Throthetowelin · 19/12/2023 09:18

Another vote for jumper if that's actually what he wants.

Yes, a Christmas jumper. You can't have too many of those.
