Token (?) gift for a man I've been seeing for a few weeks

Gah! I've been seeing a lovely man since the end of October. It's going really well and hopefully there's a future there. So I think I need to get him something for Christmas, but think a token present is probably the most appropriate - but what?

I don't want it to be too dull, or to be spending too much on him (as I have only known him (not even) 2 months.

Never booze.

Grin Do you suppose every single person who has bought alcohol as a gift for a man now feels obliged to snatch back their present, replacing it with abject apologies?

Shamelessly Placemarking for when you come back and tell us what he made you Grin

Same! 😂

OP, don’t write it off just yet as being shit.

Well he said that he got the equipment out of the attic. Tried it out. I don't know what he could be making that requires equipment/kit

I thought a corn dolly?! a pot of some kind maybe?

Maybe you'll make pottery together, all sexy, like in the old movie 'Ghost'.

mewkins · 20/12/2023 20:59

I would say he's either a Potter or a wood turner! Or maybe he's going to paint you something..... is he an arty type? If so, an interesting art book or look on something like the Royal Academy gift shop for inspiration?

liveforsummer · 20/12/2023 22:21

Place marking to find out what he makes bit also I think a good travel mug is a good option, some coffee and some nice chocs. Could even throw in an alcohol miniature that goes with coffee or a baileys or whisky

I assume he knows the plan is for token gifts ?

Yes, this is a good point. A zillion years ago before DH and kids, I was going out with a man for the same amount of time. He was really stressed out at work, so I bought him a double handed massage in a fancy spa - he bought me an Ali G compilation video. Well that was awkward.

MonikerBing · 21/12/2023 15:21

The alcohol miniature is a good idea.

I've gone for nice coffee and a travel mug thing. I was going to make biscuits rather than buy them

Anyway, he's now got covid so I won't see him before Christmas. Lots of time for him to be making my present (although today when I spoke to him he was making a Victorian Pomander thing by sticking cloves in an orange so I'm slightly concerned.)

Please report back after you open his gift, OP!

Lovemusic82 · 21/12/2023 19:46

I think it’s really sweet that he’s making you something, I would love that much more than a bought gift.

I’m in a similar situation, been dating someone for a few months but I know he can’t really afford to get me anything so we kind of agreed not to do gifts. I have however got him some chocolate and am tempted to buy him some coffee as he loves good coffee and can’t really afford it right now.

I think it’s hard buying clothes for someone, choosing a jumper could be tricky so I would go for the travel mug and nice coffee.

MachineBee · 21/12/2023 19:51

For the first Xmas after we’d been dating a couple of months, I bought my now DH a sky diving experience. We’ve been together nearly 20 years and he says that was one of his favourite gifts from me. Mind you his favourite pressie of all is an electric drill, so…🤷‍♀️

Finchgold · 27/12/2023 23:42

Soooo?

ThesecondLEM · 28/12/2023 00:06

I'm invested now ...what did he make you?

MistletoeRegrets · 28/12/2023 00:52

Oh, yes - also here for the reveal!

determinedtomakethiswork · 28/12/2023 05:50

I want to know, too!

flowerchild2000 · 28/12/2023 05:54

Edit: I'm tired and totally didn't realize the date on this 🤦🏽‍♀️Although ironic considering! Now I want to know what he made!

I like handmade gifts like an aftershave/beard balm or soap. Sounds dull when I type it out but handmade goods are inherently fancy yet inexpensive.

Tonight1 · 28/12/2023 07:18

I know I'm being nosy but I was curious as well 😁

Backinthedress · 28/12/2023 07:26

And this nosy lot have bumped the thread so now I've found it and want to know, too!

CircleofWillis · 28/12/2023 08:18

Me too! I'm hoping it is something wooden like a trinket box. A boyfriend once made me a hexagonal jewelry box with beautifully mitred corners.

MonikerBing · 07/01/2024 09:33

Oh just remembered this thread!

He made a stained glass ornament (Small Christmas tree) - soldered together little elements of it with red and green coloured glass. It is very sweet!

(He also got me a scarf as I lost mine just before Christmas).

QueSyrahSyrah · 07/01/2024 09:40

Oh how lovey OP! And how did the coffee, travel mug and biscuits go down with him?

Fern86 · 07/01/2024 11:56

Aw that sounds lovely and special!

Cowhen · 07/01/2024 15:44

Thanks for updating! That sounds very thoughtful.
