Supermarket deliveries

I’m Australian and in Australia and never do an online grocery shop anyway so please be gentle.

I am trying to organise MIL and family’s Christmas present in the UK - just outside a larger city, for context. DH wants to send a hamper but that ship has sailed.

Can I just do an online supermarket shop for delivery of cheese, flowers etc and would it be delivered in time for Christmas? I think someone is home most of the time so flexibility for delivery is ok. I read on here each year about delivery slots and whathaveyou.

My alternative is to ring the greengrocers in the naice village next door and see if they can do something for me.

No, DH will not do it himself. He is too unwell and I adore my MIL so want to do this.

Thanks in advance for your kind advice.

If you can get a slot they won’t guarantee the items* so you’re better off getting an actual gift hamper. I don’t know what would still be available this time of year but you could try Marks and Spencer, Harvey Nichols, Harrods, Fortnum and Mason.

*ETA: we didn’t have the wine you wanted so swapped it. I ordered a Merlot and got a Chardonnay once. I wasn’t best pleased.

Majority of supermarkets has a minimum spend for deliveries, you may be better off doing an internet search of private businesses that do hamper deliveries, I’m sure some would be very accommodating giving your circumstances

It might be a struggle with a non uk based payment card.

Ocado accept PayPal but they don't deliver everywhere. Could amazon be an option?

Your options will really depend on where about in the UK you Mil and family are.

SeatonCarew · 17/12/2023 06:29

It would work but you'll have to get in very quick, obviously all the slots directly before Christmas are booked. Tick no substitutions if you don't want any. 🎄

Personally I'd go for the greengrocer and be prepared to pay a premium.

The thing with the supermarket is you have to book a slot and lots of those are taken and then they might not have what you want anyway.

Alternatively try a florist for flowers, there's an online company called bloom and wild that send through the post

A local farm shop or something similar might do this better. if you share location in the UK someone might be able to help, otherwise look at Betty's, Fenwick, Liberty of London, John Lewis etc for ready made hampers.

You’re not going to get an online supermarket delivery at this late stage. The slots will have been sold out weeks ago. Your idea of contacting the local business might be worth a try though.

There are still delivery slots near me to the 20th, it depends no doubt where the OP needs to send things.

And thank you everyone, for your replies. I will look at Waitrose etc tonight and see what comes up. If no joy, I will ring the greengrocer who do not yet have an online shop so I may be in luck.

John Lewis are still delivering hampers in time for Christmas.

SeatonCarew · 17/12/2023 08:19

Thanks for this post OP. you prompted me to place a delivery order for the 20th. 😊

Good luck!

Nonentity2023 · 18/12/2023 10:22

That’s true @SeatonCarew . It will indeed depend on the area and how many different supermarkets there are in the vicinity - and if you have a preference for a particular supermarket. I have my Tesco deliver and M and S collection booked for the 23rd. Now keeping everything crossed that it will fit in the fridge 😅

I’m glad you were able to get the 20th booked 🙂

Oh goodness @TheSandgroper , you're not in Queensland are you? I work in flood risk management in the UK and have been following your flooding on the news. At least we don't have crocodiles in our flood waters.

TheSandgroper · 18/12/2023 21:14

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads No, its just a saying over here.
