Nothing too difficult to learn, they'll probably want to play it on Christmas Day. Any ideas?

They have Dixit
Cards against humanity family edition
Labyrinth

Beat it! is great! It’s not a board game but you get challenge cards and have to do various activities. We love it!

Holidayqueen1 · 16/12/2023 17:15

We loved taskmaster, exploding kittens, sushi go. throw throw burrito, monopoly deal ( my favourite!), trek across the world ( fabulous game), race across the world, Betrayal at House on the Hill and bank attack. Can’t wait for Christmas to play lots of games! Have bought poetry for Neanderthals, Bumfuzzle and Ski Run this year

Ticket to ride

Mum2three63 · 16/12/2023 17:21

We also like Carcassonne

TheChosenTwo · 16/12/2023 17:21

Mine love six second scribbles and I didn’t realise there was a different one so thanks to a pp for sharing that, I’ve just ordered it for a stocking!
I’ve bought ds the chameleon game and hope we all have fun with it.
my recommendation in the Mexican train game, it’s dominos based and we’ve loved it, very simple and can be played with quite a lot of people or as few as 2.

SkaterGrrrrl · 16/12/2023 17:52

Herd
Carcassonne
Telestrations

The Really Nasty Horse Racing Game is the best game ever.

CorvusPurpureus · 16/12/2023 19:37

Mah jong! On to its 5th generation in my family. I learned it from my grandmother.

Outsmarted great for all ages as you put age in and it tailors questions for each person

I bought this. I'm really looking forward to it!

Greenbriar · 16/12/2023 21:42

Alhambra
Azul
Carcassonne
Pandemic
Settlers of Catan
Skull
Ticket to Ride
Unstable Unicorns (a card game)

A bit more involved, but very playable:
Ankh
Scythe

DataColour · 16/12/2023 22:05

Most traditional board games rely too much on luck (there really is no or very little skill in Monopoly) The modern ones are more tactics based.

I recommend:
Scythe
Codenames
Azul
Sagrada
Wingspan
Camel Up
Pandemic
Plague Inc
Deep sea adventure
Waggle dance
6 nimits

Gsyllama · 16/12/2023 22:40

How old are the teens and what do they like? Good with losing?
There's so many great modern games to pick from, but here are some of my suggestions :
Flick em Up - cowboy theme game of flicking in a duel
Oceans - beautiful, very gentle game of making species
Heat - great racing game, pricey - something like Camel Up is much cheaper
Pandemic - cooperative (everyone vs the game) strategy game - pretty challenging, so need to set it as a challenge puzzle rather than getting upset over losing, older teens?
Forbidden Island - Just like Pandemic but suitable for younger teens, easier and lighter theme
Colt Express - fun game of robbing a train, v silly, need to be ok with plans going wrong!
Wingspan - hugely popular, good for those who like birds
Wavelength - party game of being on the same line of thought
Codenames - so simple but very effective

To be honest I would take a look at a website like Shut up and sit down for ideas and think about whether you want a party game or a more thought - crunchy one as a start.

Highly recommend Outsmarted for all ages

Worst-Case Scenario

TheFamilyBump · 17/12/2023 23:26

We love Catan, Carcassonne, Pandemic, 221B Baker Street, Rummikub, Outsmarted, Logo, Uno, Monopoly Deal...

HappyCamperTent · 17/12/2023 23:34

I too don’t get the appeal of exploding kittens! Was a bit boring!

Not a board game but Dobble is ace, if a little stressful!

ChristmasCwtch · 17/12/2023 23:42

We love Articulate and Scattegories

daisybe · 18/12/2023 01:46

The obvious ones have already been mentioned, which we love. So ill list some different options...

We like Red Dragon Inn. It's fairly easy to pick up, quick and really funny! (Trying to survive getting drunk in an Inn!) we look up "tavern ambience and music" on YouTube and play it in the background which makes it extra authentic!

Another fun one is Galaxy Truckers. (Building and flying a space ship) Also easy to pick up, quick rounds doesnt take long overall but enough you feel satisfied and the first round is a 'learn to play' round so you get a practice in.

If you want something a little more strategic and you feel they can handle something that needs a bit more thought and complexity then Village is good (lots of stuff to learn but you do learn after a few rounds there are also rounds within rounds but again, you pick it up) as is Talisman, which can take a few hours but fun once you get the hang of it.

Something 'intermediate' but I also think after a round or two you can pick up and learn fairly quickly is Castle of Mad King Ludvig.

We also like Pandemic. Our friends have this, so we played it when at theirs. I actually just bought it in John Lewis today so we can play at home.
