How much gravy...?

per person? Am planning to make Jamie Oliver's make-ahead gravy (has anyone tried this before?) and wondering how much to make. I have 11 people here - mix of teens with big appetites and elderly people with tiny appetites. The standard recipe is 1 litre. Is that about right? Wouldn't really want people to not get enough gravy!

3 of us here and I make 1/2 litre of gravy with a Sunday dinner and it all goes...ds loves his yorkshires full of it and will also have slices of bread and gravy to use it up!

Whataretheodds · 14/12/2023 13:11

More. Always more gravy. You'll want it with leftovers.

Look at 1 litre of liquid and imagine that in a jug on the table on Christmas Day. Is it enough or do you want twice as much?

TreacleMines · 14/12/2023 13:22

Twice as much as you think- with some Yorkshire pudding batter mixed in!

LightSpeeds · 14/12/2023 13:23

Loads - and then some more!

TomatoSandwiches · 14/12/2023 13:23

1ltr would not be sufficient for 11 people.
I would have 2 gravy boats/sauce pots and 1 more in the fridge so 3ltrs at least.

Dotcheck · 14/12/2023 13:23

I would do at least 2 batches

KittensSchmittens · 14/12/2023 13:24

2 litres and some ready made shop bought in the fridge for emergencies.

VeganNugsNotDrugs · 14/12/2023 13:25

Half a pint per person. So 4 litres to be sure!

NameChangeToday80 · 14/12/2023 13:26

One Million Gravy.

Pallisers · 14/12/2023 13:26

double whatever you think is generous.

badger2005 · 14/12/2023 13:27

Ooh okay... lots of gravy!
Doubling the quantity for sure then to make 2 litres.
Tripling would involve 30 chicken wings... or 9 drumsticks plus 9 chicken legs... that is an awful lot of left over cooked chicken to use up...
Maybe I'll do 2 litres and then have standby emergency gravy too.
Thanks so much everyone!

Woah wait you're messing with me!
half a litre per person? A pint of gravy each? Surely that's not necessary!

OP posts:
badger2005 · 14/12/2023 13:29

Oh no sorry I misread - half a pint per person...

But then 3 litres should be enough for 11 people right?

One Million Gravy.

Absolutely this.

Terrribletwos · 14/12/2023 13:29

I would say 3 litres considering left overs and as Jamie says you can never have enough gravy. And, also it's not like it's difficult to make or keep in the fridge.

SABM10 · 14/12/2023 13:29

I'd treble that for 11, at minimum. Maybe quadruple. Nothing worse than a roast with insufficient gravy! The Yorkshires and stuffien and all the veg need to be generously doused in the brown stuff.

Explain yourself woman!! 😂

PauliesWalnuts · 14/12/2023 13:31

I do 3 litres for 12 people - most of it goes on the first round, and then you'll get people having a bit more turkey and an odd roast and bit of stuffing and finishing it off!

DisforDarkChocolate · 14/12/2023 13:32

I aim to do a batch and a half of Jamie Gravy, then add the meat juices. That would do 6 in our house with enough for leftover dinner dinner.

I'd double the Jamie recipe for eleven and maybe get a couple of pots of M&S gravy just in case.

badger2005 · 14/12/2023 13:34

Okay you've persuaded me. I'll triple it!
There will be lots of left over chicken meat from the legs/drumsticks. I plan to make his little pastry things with them as recommended (though I'll just buy the puff pastry), but that won't use it all up. Can I freeze the rest to make into a pie later?

OP posts:
myphoneisbroken · 14/12/2023 13:34

It's a fantastic recipe but I wouldn't worry about using up the left over chicken as once you've mashed everything up it's all rather unappetising and will most likely just go in the bin.

DisforDarkChocolate · 14/12/2023 13:35

I'd a bloody good recipe though but it always takes me twice as long as Jamie says.

Spend time making sure you brown everything enough if you want to avoid the gravy been to pale.

I use leek and mushrooms instead of celery (because it's evil) and always add the cranberry sauce.

Brefugee · 14/12/2023 13:36

how much gravy? always twice as much as you think you need.

badger2005 · 14/12/2023 13:37

Ah okay so there won't really be chicken left-overs? That's good to know. Maybe just enough to make the pastries for the 4 of us and then I'll bin the rest.
Heartened to see that while this will involve an awful lot of chicken wings, they are quite cheap.

badger2005 · 14/12/2023 13:42

Wait - sorry guys. I'm reading the recipe. To make 1 ltr, I have to pour 2 litres of boiling water into a tray. So to make 3 ltr, I have to pour 6 litres of boiling water into a tray. But who has a tray that can hold 6 litres?!
I guess I can transfer from a couple of trays into a couple of pans?
Sorry mumsnetters, I'm just trying to get myself organised today ready for Christmas, and have only ever hosted us 4 plus my 2 parents who are quite elderly and don't really eat much.
