Christmas cake disaster?

I'm in France so we only have plain flour and now my cake has been merrily baking for an hour, I realise that I forgot to add baking powder.

Will it be ok?

It will almost certainly be fine!

Christmas cake is so dense it doesn't rise much and the eggs should give some rise.

sprigatito · 09/12/2023 16:55

If it's a traditional Christmas rich, dense fruit cake it will be absolutely fine! Some recipes don't have any raising agents in them anyway.

contactus · 09/12/2023 16:55

depends on the christmas cake itself?

I’m in France too and I’ve done this. It was ok, I only realised afterwards when I noticed the recipe said self raising flour. They’re starting to sell self raising flour here now, I think it’s called farine à gâteau.

Should be fine for a rich fruit cake - the recipe I use doesn’t have any baking powder in it anyway!

Phew. Just your classic heavy Delia cake so hopefully ok! Cake

What recipe do you use if you don't mind me asking? 😊

I've just made the Delia classic cake today and it specifies plain flour and no baking powder

Talisin · 09/12/2023 17:43

I forgot the flour one year! It was very sticky and didn’t hold its shape well but it was delicious - we refer to it as the year of the Slumpy Cake.

I noted down Delia's recipe in my notes app a couple of years ago. Maybe that's why I missed it off. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I just double checked everything and that is exactly what I'd done. I was 8 and half months pregnant last year so didn't make one and couldn't remember what I'd done in previous years. 😂

My cake looks good! I made a smaller one this year so didn't need as much baking. Enjoy your cake! 😊🎄
