Nice vinyl records for 20 year old

I've bought DS a turntable and would like to help him get started with a record collection, at which point I'm feeling a bit clueless.

He loves rap so I've got him a Little Simz album. But I'm also wondering about getting some classic rap records, or hiphop or even drum and bass?

If I can pick up some decent old records I won't necessarily blow my entire budget on this gift is my thinking 😭

Any ideas anyone? Thanks

If you don't mind buying some secondhand ones, have a look on discogs. That'll also tell you what you can normally expect to pay for one so you know you're not being ripped off. The sellers also have to grade them on their quality, ie if the sleeve is in good condition or not

In terms of which to actually get, I'm not much helpGrin

My daughter, 15, got a record player last year for Xmas and has a great record collection now. I pick up records at charity shops sometimes but for Xmas and Birthdays, my go-to is HMV. They do a deal with 3 x Vinyl for £60 and they have a great range to choose from. Their website lets you filter by genre, which will help you find the kind of music you're looking for. Delivery is quick & easy.

We got loads of records also from family members who have their own, old collections up in the loft. Perhaps a Facebook post appealing to family/friends who has any they'd like to rehome to give you a shout?

Also, discogs will be big help to you for future birthdays/Xmas as he can update his collection on there and also add any he wants to get to his wantlist, makes it much easier for you to pick some to buy!

A few classic hip hop/rap albums everyone should own...

De La Soul - Three feet high and rising
Beastie Boys - License to Ill
NWA - Straight Outta Compton

He might also like...

The Prodigy, Eminen, Public Enemy, Tribe called Quest, Outkast.

So much to choose from - have fun!
