The annual help a useless man find a gift for his wife thread

Hello Mumsnetters,

Me again with my annual thread looking for gift advice for my wife. In return, I will give top tips on male gifts (no we don't want cheap cycling gear. Yes we do want expensive hiking boots).

My wife (46, outdoorsy, dog loving) has had a rough few months with the passing of her father, so I'm keen to get her something special. Holidays are out as we have one booked in Feb. All I have to work with this year is that she seemingly loves everything from Wolf and Badger, likes Penhalligon's perfume and I have a note in my phone that says "Rosa's T Gloves" but no idea what it means. Only that I made a note of it when she mentioned them at some point...

Help!

Ahh this is a lovely thread
I sound similar to your wife, too. A fun stocking filler could be an led beanie hat for dog walks?
When I lost my dad a couple of years ago, my best friend had an infinity symbol bracelet made for me with his police badge number on, so thoughtful.

I have just been looking at some Julia Rose tweed teal gloves ........or could it be roses gloves for gardening.....hmmm

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 28/11/2023 22:14

Johnston’s of Elgin or strathberry for something with a Scottish connection?

welcome back @Carleatspeas !

NancyJoan · 28/11/2023 22:21

Re the gloves, anything to do with Rosa’s Thai?

£2k for a dressing gown is quite spicy!

The restaurant? I don't think so?

Could the gloves be gardening gloves, for dealing with t(horny) roses?

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 28/11/2023 22:28

That is true! They had some decent Black Friday offers on hats/scarfs/gloves/jumpers but it must’ve ended today

You might get some inspiration from this thread , but unless you are 100% sure she wants it don't get her practical kitchen stuff !

I'd get a lovely old phot of her dad made nice & framed - a cheap frame & mount is fine-it will be loved. Local photo places will be able to refine bad photos

Just remembered. She likes Bum Bum cream too, so I have looked (and failed) for a large gift box from that brand.

I was maybe thinking of a ring this year. That's a minefield that fills me with fear.

Do you just use mumsnet at Xmas OP?

Britneyfan · 29/11/2023 01:17

I would get her a ring for sure. She sounds like the sort of person who would really appreciate decent jewellery from her husband to me. We can help guide you (but yes you’ll have to find out her ring size somehow).

I want expensive hiking boots. Sexist to call them male gifts

Britneyfan · 29/11/2023 01:20

Also Wolf and Badger is a huge shop so it should be easy to find something she’ll like from there, whether jewellery or clothing. I love it too, had some gorgeous proper gold earrings from there last Christmas.

Random suggestion but I am eyeing up these gorgeous shoes which look suitable for dog walking

Suede for dog walking?! They’d get trashed by mud and rain water!

Blacks have a good sale on atm: has she got a good RAB down jacket? If you work in the City the branch by St Paul’s has a closing down sale, Didrickson coats, the lot! And as well as 30% off you also get 10 or 15% off if you are a NT member! I recommend the RAB zipped hoodies too.

White Company cashmere bed socks? So light you can barely feel you have them on but so warm.

A lovely fire pit for the garden

Uniqlo heat tech , the ribbed pink turtle neck or the striped ones in the current ‘guest’ range. Also a Uniqlo cashmere jumper.

These are things I would like 😂

(I bought fantastic Meindl walking boots in the Blacks sale!)

They also have no tread on the soles. Slippy.
Lovely looking warm boots for nipping out for coffee though!

Well I guess this shows that all women are different, because I'd be massively underwhelmed to receive toiletries or jewellery. Seems a bit generic to me.

Outdoorsy, you say? Are you near the coast, and has she ever shown an interest in wild swimming? How about a dryrobe, decent flask and ludicrous bobble hat?

Walking? A pair of Vivo Barefoot boots and/ or a decent day pack?

Kelly kettle and luxury picnic rug?

A taster rock climbing or surfing session?

Nice camping gear?

Books: The Salt Path, Wild by Cheryl Strayed, anything by Robert Macfarlane, there are loads of brilliant books about nature and the outdoors out there at the moment.

A decent pair of binoculars (what I'd really like, but I have no one to buy them for me :( )

crackofdoom · 29/11/2023 09:56

One of those personalised Ordnance Survey maps that centres where you live.

commonground · 29/11/2023 10:05

Do not get her an Air Fryer. Or a Soda Stream. Or a Velvetiser. She doesn't want them for Christmas.
