Best Christmas in the North

Any recommendations for the best Northern Christmas Market? We are in North Yorkshire dales/moors border area.
Only time for one Christmas market- we did York last year but found it quite disappointing!

I've been to Newcastle at Christmas before but never specifically the market. Could potentially do Edinburgh on the train but would prefer not as don't want to stay overnight.

Edinburgh markets are pretty awful and apparently they’re smaller this year and the reports from weekend were that they were ridiculously over crowded with princes street pavement jammed with the queuing system.

I won't be spending money on a train ticket then! One to take off the list

The Newcastle one was disappointing when I went yesterday. Maybe there'll be more stalls closer to Christmas (check the Evening Chronicle). The food was ridiculously over-priced too.

York's is alright but I think it's just the same stuff you'll have seen before. And SO busy - think tens of thousands of shoppers all kettled in, some tanked up on mulled wine and a bit shouty.
Apparently the tomato chutney is great this year but whether you want to run that gauntlet is up to you 😬

I think all Christmas markets are pretty disappointing - much of a muchness, same stalls, overpriced etc. However, I do like a wander just for the smells mainly. Sorry that’s not helpful. We were in Newcastle this weekend and tied it in with the new light trail in the park, so if you were to tie it in with something else that might be nice.

I’ve heard Lincoln is nice but I’ve never been.

Peanutcookies · 27/11/2023 12:25

Lincoln was awesome but they’ve cancelled it now :(

I'd avoid the Newcastle one. I work right next to it and have to walk through it to get to my bus. I think it's very disappointing compared to the Leeds one we went to a few years ago.

Manchester is known for its markets. I went to the Chester markets last weekend and they were somewhat pleasant but not that special and very crowded. I think I'm just not a Christmas markets person - I like the idea of them but the reality is disappointing.

Churchvisit · 27/11/2023 14:35

Thank you all.
I think we will give it a miss this year- I don't fancy taking a whole day out to be disappointed! Maybe next year

Manchester is a bit disappointing this year. Ok if you like getting pissed and eating 1000s of calories but not much in the way of crafts. Overcrowded too as you’d expect.

I don't know how far you want to travel, but our local Christmas market is at Harrogate, and it's pretty lovely. It's much the same stalls, but there's extra as well; an ice rink, a big wheel to ride on, a little road train that goes around the town (my DS loves this), and they make a big effort with lots of lights on trees, decorated windows, etc.
