What time do you switch your outside lights on/off?

This is the first time I've had Christmas lights up in the window. It's been a few days and I've just been switching them on when it gets dark and off when I go to bed about 9.30. Then on again when I get up about 5.30 until it get's light.

Is there an etiquette to this? I'm thinking maybe I'm supposed to leave them on all night or something. What does everyone else do?

Ps. I haven't got a timer so it's just switch on switch off.

Garage ones on a timer - 4pm till 11.30pm.

Porch arch (and fairy lights in the lounge which are up year round) in snart plugs - 30min before sunset till 11 30pm.

Think I need a timer then so that everyone doesn't know I go to bed at half nine

4pm-9pm. It’s roughly when it’s dark until mid evening. We also go to bed early and our small street doesn’t get many people walk down after dark anyway so it’s just for Ds really as a few neighbours

We have it on a timer, 4-10pm

TeenDivided · 25/11/2023 17:18

On a timer approx 4 to 10.30 and then 7-8 in the morning.

GrumpyPanda · 25/11/2023 17:20

Depends if they're shining in somebody else's bedroom I guess. And for the love of God, please tell us yours don't flash off and on!

dudsville · 25/11/2023 17:20

Like everyone else. Timer, 6-7.30 in the morning and 4 to 10 in the evening.

AutumnLea · 25/11/2023 17:49

Ah mine sounds about right then. Don't worry nothing flashy it's only a little star curtain thing.

Had to google the wet bandits then, years since I saw home alone! Watching it tonight, thank you 😊

Gable lights - on at dusk, off when I go to bed - anywhere between 9 and 11.30. They are static soft white lights though. I don't like pulsing, flashing or harsh white lights.

Christmas tree lights, when anyone is in the sitting room.

I never have them on in the morning. They aren't up yet (as it's still November) but they go on about 4.30 on a timer and off six hours later.
