Stocking filler ideas for a ski trip

LarkspurLane · 21/11/2023 16:40

DS is going on a school ski trip in February.
The trip is a 20 hours on a coach trip, saved up for a year, so we are fairly low budget, and I am just looking for stocking filler ideas for the coach and little things he might use when he's there.

He's never skied before (nor have I) so while school will give us a good list of essentials, I'm trying to think of other things.
So far I have small power bank and maybe those hand/foot warmer things.
Anything else I could/should squeeze in?

My Son is also going in February- I've bought him a nice toiletries case / bag from Boots - they have the Ted Baker bags - with travel toiletries.

LarkspurLane · 21/11/2023 16:51

Some great ideas, thank you.

Ski ties are handy - they hold a pair of skies together - makes it much easier to carry them. Some have a place to write a name - so useful when trying to spot one pair amongst many.

Also, he will be wearing sunglasses or goggles - if sunglasses, a sunglasses strap would be nice as he might be falling over quite a bit.

SayNoToDoorToDoor · 21/11/2023 16:55

You want a large power bank each for that time on the coach. I got DS a thick scarf to use on the coach instead of a travel pillow. He said it was better than a travel pillow.

Ear buds for his phone so he can listen to music.

Chocolate
Travel pack of shampoo/conditioner/lynx
lip salve with SPF.

Aldi have their ski stuff out at the moment which are really good for jacket/goggles/base layers/socks/hat/gloves.

LarkspurLane · 21/11/2023 18:49

Thanks all. I think I might get some practical stuff for Christmas and then give him a survival pack of chocolate, lip salve, etc before he goes.
We have a few of those things to keep sunglasses on, I'll have to try to find one.

My son was bought a small microfibre cloth for wiping glasses/goggles with a print of the ski resort that he was visiting on it. Thought that was a really thoughtful gift.

Aldi have some ski stuff - great value

Things for the bus,
Book
Travel game
Some way of playing music that doesn't involve streaming using loads of data.
Something that can be used as a pillow.
Power pack.

Skiing
Id look at the list they have given you.
Id consider two pairs of gloves. Kids get gloves soaking playing IN snow Adults playing ON snow.

Dont worry about lift pass holders most ski jackets have pockets on sleeve or chest for them. You don't need to remove them any more.

Nor would I bother with hand warmers you need to boil them to reset them.

Twitch45 · 23/11/2023 07:03

Disposable hand warmers from Sports Direct. Not as environmentally friendly as the reusable ones but so much warmer. I'd be miserable in winter without them.

My son did a similar coach journey recently. We put audible and Spotify on his phone with some books/music downloaded. However he took normal (wired) headphones which didn't work with his phone! So I'd advise checking what sort of headphones he needs - Bluetooth most likely if his phone is new-ish (DS has a pretty basic phone so I was surprised by this).

LarkspurLane · 23/11/2023 08:57

Thank you all, some great ideas that I hadn't thought of. I think he can download a playlist for the coach, I'll check he's done that.
Love those ski resort microfibres but I can't find where he's going. Will mention to other skiing friends though, they are a lovely idea!

A novelty helmet cover. It will go over the top of a rented helmet

I thought the microfibre piste maps were a brilliant idea for DH, DGSs and DSs, but the one for our resort is out of stock. So annoying.

Ibizafun · 23/11/2023 16:35

I wouldn't give him things like sunblock/lip balm as a present.. they're not presents they're essentials. How about a go pro camera that fits on his helmet or a fun game to play with his friends at the end of the day?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/11/2023 18:46

A fleece neck snood thing. Mountain warehouse have them. In fact, they have a good selection of 3 for 2 gloves, hats, socks and other handy outdoory things.

Also wool rich socks, the higher tye wool content the warmer they are.

SM4713 · 23/11/2023 19:01

How old is he? Which resort is he going to?

Inner gloves add an extra layer of warmth on blizzard and freezing days and are worn inside regular ski gloves. https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/adult-mountain-trekking-seamless-liner-gloves-mt500//R-p-173114?mc=8390734&utm_term=8390734-2245065&&iv=iv_p_1_g_147398733286_c_657307022788_w_pla-299126555702_n_g_d_c_v__l__t__r_x_pla_y_15177021_f_online_o_8390734-2245065_z_GB_i_en_j_299126555702_s__e__h_9045051_ii__vi&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAjfyqBhAsEiwA-UdzJMJGNFLeuz5ZTguLyFdF2JKLYT1n0AJ_uQaAWoFPeqXXv1pMBO3HWxoCq9gQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

This hangs around the neck for a sunscreen top up during the day and protection from chapped lips https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200642763986?var=0&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338268676&toolid=10044&customid=CjwKCAiAjfyqBhAsEiwA-UdzJMcp1Zo1cKuMyAwWL3WuWqWnmlwLn4TqJ_PbaeJnC-I2_eVfLjyt4BoCMs4QAvD_BwE

Plus an additional bottle of 50+ SPF, and remind him to coat under his nose and chin. I've skiied for many years and had a friend who had 2nd degree burns under their nose and chin from the sun reflection from the snow 😬

Tissues- you can never have too many! https://www.boots.com/boots-balsam-tissues-multi-pack-4ply-10317832?awaid=2041&utm_source=redbrain&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=css&affwin&cm_mmc=affiliates--Comparison%20Shopping%20Service%20%28CSS%29--Redbrain-_-176013&utm_source=affiliates&utm_medium=Comparison+Shopping+Service+%28CSS%29&utm_campaign=Redbrain-176013&sv1=affiliate&sv_campaign_id=176013&sv1=affiliate&sv_campaign_id=176013&awc=2041_1700765624_5ff1e3e2e528a90154b9a30d42112148

He will likely have poorly fitted hire boots, so thick, warm socks are needed- and at least 1 pair per day- https://www.mountainwarehouse.com/mens-ski-socks-p20701.aspx/Cobalt/?utm_source=google_shopping&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=ePMax+-+High+Score+-+Shopping+US&utm_term=&utm_content=|pcrid||pkw||pmt||pdv|c|slid||product|028458014004|&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAjfyqBhAsEiwA-UdzJArOh6HocLNIM9uNRbd5SRI5CKoV_jJVJQewhsFyGyH9bf_HzoZ5GhoCad0QAvD_BwE
