What older iPad for a 9 year old?

My 9 year old son wants an iPad for Christmas. He loves making films, animations and YouTube videos. He's done a digital film making course for kids and they use iMovie. He's also into gaming.

The 2021 iPad is over £300 and out of my reach financially. Can anyone recommend an older model that would still work for him to do what he needs it to?

Backmarket sell refurbished iPads, I think this may be the best way to go considering your budget. iPads have a good lifespan on them, and this is why I get them for my kids.
I've bought mine new directly from Apple and it sets you back a lot, but they also do last. I paid £400 for my eldest daughter's iPad 3 years ago and it's still going perfectly, she uses it daily for drawing, creating videos and Roblox & Minecraft. I spend £600 on my other daughter's iPad and she uses it for gaming and YouTube. Battery life on both iPads is amazing, lasts all day.
I have sold my daughter's old iPad simply as my daughter wanted a new one (I know it sounds ridiculous but I bought her a pink one and she wanted a different one, she has ASD). The battery on them is so good so buying second hand is fine, just make sure you get a one year warranty to cover it.

What is the iPad your eldest daughter has?

It's an 8th Gen, but I got her 128GB storage as due to her creating so many videos I figured she would need the space. She's never ran out of room!

This is a useful list, shows you which are still supported. If they’re not supported then you may start to have trouble with apps not working as you won’t be able to use the latest iOS. I’d go for 7th gen or newer, to have a decent length of time left.

Whatever you get make sure it’s got 128 gb storage as you cannot expand them and the updates take up loads of room .
