What Colours are you decorating with this year?

I change most years (donate to thrift store and buy different colours from thrift store)

Last year I did green, white and gold.

This year I am doing blue, green and brown.

What about you?

After many years of trendy, striking and stylish looks: white and pearl, pinks and reds, white and gold, woodland and animals...

I have come to accept that nothing beats the proper, traditional, red gold and green. Like the chameleon.

friendsfiend · 12/11/2023 06:28

Everything. I like a colourful Christmas and and we add one or two lovely new baubles every year.
Themes make me sad, mainly because there's so much waste and people are changing their decorations every year.

My friend told me beige Christmas is a thing this year. Wtf!

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 12/11/2023 06:43

I agree with red gold and green, I just love how traditional and festive it looks. And I can't bring myself to change baubles because they've been in the family for so long and they remind me of old times. I've never changed theme but I do add a cute new bauble from time to time

Frostythereindeer · 12/11/2023 07:04

I'm also thinking of going back to red gold green for a traditional look this year. Anyone that does this, what colour lights do you go with?

We'll still keep last year's ones and use them also elsewhere.

KnickerlessParsons · 12/11/2023 07:08

We'll be using the eclectic decs we've used for the last 25+ years and not adding to all the tat in the world.
Donating to charity/thrift shops doesn't make for less tat, it just makes you feel better.

ChaosMoon · 12/11/2023 07:34

We've moved from a tiny house in London to a big house in the country and I only have enough decorations (and furniture) for about a third of it. So, I'm not getting rid of anything but I will be very focused while expanding the collection.

I'm going Burgundy, gold, copper and dark green.

So basically the red, gold and green classic. 😂

DappledThings · 12/11/2023 07:38

Same random collection of things we've picked up over the years. Nothing matching. DC are allowed to add one more random thing to eat each year when we buy the tree.

Curated and themed decorations always look rather sad and commercial in a home.

SparklingSparkle · 12/11/2023 07:41

Am I meant to have a theme each year?
I’m putting up what I have in an array of sparkly chaos.
Use what you have and don’t get sucked into buying more than you need.

Dowhadiddydiddydum · 12/11/2023 07:43

I’m be using all the colours. Most of my decs are gold as that was the theme I tried but then I had kids and allowed them to purchase a new dec each year- so we have all sorts of crap now. I’m too cheap to get rid of it all and start again and I also like seeing the old decorations chosen over previous years.

smilesup · 12/11/2023 07:46

One of mine and the kids favourite bit about Christmas is that we have the same decorations every year. Most of mine where from I was a kid or ones we made.

I'll be singing that all day now! Grin

I have all of the colours, mostly red but there's all manner of baubles on my tree, the best ones being the ones DC made in nursery/primary school.

I always use warm white lights though, I really love the idea of a proper 90's Xmas with coloured lights but I can't bring myself to do it!

The OP says they purchase secondhand too (if I have understood what a 'thrift store' is?), so they are not adding to the world's total stock of baubles.

muddyford · 12/11/2023 07:57

The same decorations I have been putting up for 30+ years. I add an odd new one most years but you can't beat the ones that are getting shabby from love.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 12/11/2023 07:57

Our tree has mostly random mismatched stuff we've bought on holidays or as reminders of specific things that happened during the year. Then there are some filler bits that are red, white and pale blue, which sort of ties it all together a bit more. I crocheted a red and white tree skirt to go with it, and made a felt advent calendar which is mainly red with blue accents, which hangs near the tree. So overall, it's fairly coordinated(ish) but commercial-looking is the last thing you could call it!

justalittlesnoel · 12/11/2023 07:57

My house is mainly red, gold and green 😂 in my bedroom I've gone for a "natural" theme this year because it's a brand new tree - I've got golds, greens, browns and lots of very cute decorations like felted animals and acorns etc. It is lovely imo!

Our main tree is a mix though, it's every decoration we've bought in our ten year relationship in every colour possible, from incredibly tacky holiday baubles to £££ crystal ones. It's definitely not any kind of theme but I bloody love getting all of the baubles out and reliving the memories!

I've got friends who bin and swap everything every year, but re purchase from cheaper stores so it doesn't cost them huge amounts but it just seems so wasteful! When we first moved in we had cheaper trees (because we bought them all at the same time) and we've replaced them with expensive trees gradually. The old tree that's replaced each year is donated fully decorated, which works well for us!

Loubelle70 · 12/11/2023 07:58

Traditional every year..red gold brown green..woodland

Teamonkey123 · 12/11/2023 07:59

Our colours this year are 'Gallifrey lives!'

What Colours are you decorating with this year?
Procrastination4 · 12/11/2023 08:04

I use the same decorations on the tree every year as I’ve been building the collection for the past 34 years, getting rid of the cheaper less interesting things we had at the beginning, and now most of our decorations are the more expensive ones I’ve been collecting, and won’t be getting rid of any time soon. I use warm white lights and there are plenty of glass ornaments on the tree to reflect the light.

BoobyDazzler · 12/11/2023 08:05

Red, gold, silver and green mainly. Same as every year. I have some lovely Christmas decorations bought over many years that mean a lot to me.

I do usually have a small tree in the kitchen which has space related decorations on - stars, planets, astronauts, spaceships etc, but even those get added to rather than replaced every year which seems incredibly wasteful.

Nonplusultra · 12/11/2023 08:05

For our first Christmas together I tried to create a colour theme but dh does not understand colour at all and would pick out clashing decorations like an excited puppy. And then I compounded the error by having dc who unfortunately were the type with opinions. So we’ve ended up with an eclectic theme.

For a while I had golden baubles on the tree, and the other ones interspersed so it still looked put together - and tasteful white lights of course.

But now there are so many unique, hand made, school crafted, and holiday souvenirs that there isn’t room for anything else. And I put two sets of lights on so that I can have white ones occasionally, and when I’m out dh and the dc can switch on the epilepsy inducing coloured ones.

So I think our theme is best described as Epileptic Eclecticism

Nonplusultra · 12/11/2023 08:08

@UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername that sounds lovely. I’d love to see a photo.

BoobyDazzler · 12/11/2023 08:08

“Epileptic Eclecticism”

I love it!

I also like coloured lights but not so much since they all changed to LED. They just aren’t the same ☹️

My tree is red / white. I have mainly knitted/ wooden decorations on it. The baubles are matt rather than shiny. I have an old Victorian house with real fireplace so I think it looks good with that.

Then as I contrast In the kitchen diner i have one of those hanging twig tres and that has silvery blue and white decorations.
