I change most years (donate to thrift store and buy different colours from thrift store)

Last year I did green, white and gold.

This year I am doing blue, green and brown.

What about you?

Everything. I like a colourful Christmas and and we add one or two lovely new baubles every year.
Themes make me sad, mainly because there's so much waste and people are changing their decorations every year.

My friend told me beige Christmas is a thing this year. Wtf!

This.
We'll be decorating with all the colourful tinsel, fairy lights snd special baubles that we have collected over the years. I don't really understand why people change their colour scheme each year. It's costly, wasteful and a bit pretentious. I am very emotionally attached to my decs!

Lovemusic82 · 12/11/2023 14:45

I used to colour code but now we just have a small potted tree which we shove as many colourful things on as possible 😁. Any colour goes and the more retro the better.

brokenhearted2 · 12/11/2023 14:08

@justalittlesnoel The old tree that's replaced each year is donated fully decorated, which works well for us!

How does this work? Do you take the tree all decorated to the charity shop?

We tend to donate privately - so either through a family in need that are known to the church I go to, or through a support charity I volunteer at. I basically leave the trees fully decorated in my garage year round, so when time comes to donate one, I wrap it in a layer of cling film and pop it in the boot! This years tree donation went to a lovely local family, so now they have a lovely festive tree whereas before they didn't have the money for one. Works well in my eyes, I brought me happiness and now it's being loved rather than discarded!

ButtonDownBev · 12/11/2023 14:50

Hot pink and red mainly (with bits of white/silver)
But it's the same I've had for the past 5 years or more. I don't believe in changing every year or buying all new decorations in one go. I add one or two bits each year if I see something I love.

RedCoatSearch · 12/11/2023 15:02

I can't imagine changing my decorations every year.
We've lived in this house for 20 years & dh bought a v expensive fake tree the first year we moved in & we use it every year.
I adore Christmas decorations & we travel a lot & I have bought a lot in places we've been.

I tend to go for very traditional with a slight Nordic feel. Red, white, green, gold, glass, wood & felt.

My decorations are really precious to me & hold the memories of all our beautiful family Christmases here.

One thing I really regret is that my mother & her sisters threw all my grandparents decorations in the bin when they were clearing out their house & I would have loved them.

OliveToboogie · 12/11/2023 16:11

Tree cream and gold. Off white lights. Then green garland for fire place. Last year got several nutcracker toys will place round house.

ShowOfHands · 12/11/2023 16:18

Our decs are a real mish mash from my Grandma's Victorian glass baubles to papier mache reindeer the DC made in reception. I buy the DC a decoration each year and they choose their own. They reflect the changing ages and tastes of their childhood and they'll leave home and take them with them to begin their own decorations. I have lots of vintage decorations I've collected, baubles from places we've travelled and trinkets which bring joy. It's like bringing out old friends.

The only changes are in the decs I make. I forage and make garlands, wreaths and table decorations and they reflect the spoils of our winter season each year.

YuliaJollyberry · 12/11/2023 16:22

Green garlands and wreaths (fake unfortunately as severe allergies) this year adorned with capris shell discs (leftover from assembling a light shade) sea glass and driftwood collected from the beach. Faux pearl garlands and warm white lights on the tree.

Another tree is mostly red, silver, black, white, lime green with the sentimental decorations in a clash of colours. Coloured lights. Threadbare tinsel.

The third tree is pink, not decided which decorations to use this year often just have lights on it sometimes the white decorations from the mish mash tree.

There are mini trees in guest bedrooms with tiny red and gold decorations and white lights instead of bedside lamps.

D20 · 12/11/2023 17:16

Last year was lime/dark green, golds and orange from faux Chinese lanterns. This year I’ve picked up some lilac decorations from dunelm as I rarely see naice ones in this colour and will use all of my multi coloured glass baubles and if the vintage multi coloured lights work those too. Kitchen tree was white, natural and blue last year (actually cardboard ones from the previous years crackers) not sure what to do this year - I’ll see what baubles are left over from the main tree and make a theme up from there.

Like the majority of posters, I don’t throw away my baubles each year and contrary to popular/traditionalist opinion many of my baubles will still be special ones chosen by DC over the years. It’s not an either or situation by a long shot.

muchalover · 12/11/2023 17:22

White or clear. With the same decorations I have had for 35 years.

LightDrizzle · 12/11/2023 12:33

Another red, gold and green family here with decorations collected over the years. I mourn the death of some of them when they get broken.

I’ve always had white lights since leaving home (30 years ago) but sometimes contemplate the coloured lights of my childhood with nostalgia. We had a succession as they didn’t last long then but some were fancy like little carriages. My mother was also big on tinsel and lammetta and I remember sitting beneath our big, groaning tree in rapturous wonder. Very tasteful trees make me sad but sometimes I think I’ve erred too far in that direction myself.

Aww your tree is beautiful!

We're the same in our house- lots of red and gold but I do miss 1990s multicoloured Christmas lights (which always have pink heavily in the mix) and bright decorations.

catattacks · 12/11/2023 21:21

Same as last year

And before

And before that

And the year before

Random

stepintochristmas1 · 12/11/2023 21:26

Just the same stuff as I've used probably the last twenty-odd years , probably some of it is at least thirty years old now . I should be ashamed of myself ?

Vebrithien · 12/11/2023 21:46

All the colours!!!

What Colours are you decorating with this year?
idontlikealdi · 12/11/2023 21:49

Our tree is a vomit of different colours, we have coloured lights too after years of ice white. I love it. We have coloured lights outside too.

There is no theme, all ornaments have a memory attached. The kids get to chose a new one each every year, usually on holiday. They're older now but would be horrified if I left them out and went with a theme.

I do get to chose the table deca which are slightly more refined.

CheersToMe · 12/11/2023 22:03

Ooh I have been contemplating my colours for this year. I've collected several colours over the years, plus sentimental ones and the DC's annual choices, so have a huge choice.
One year DC spent hours doing and ombré rainbow using every single decoration, that tree was amazing.
I'm pondering hot pink and orange to go with the 60-odd 'specials'. Plus pink lametta, tinsel and multi coloured pickwick lights. Inspired by this little gem www.zara.com/uk/en/christmas-glass-droplet-decoration-p41308060.html?v1=283370309&v2=2298815

Worriedkittycat · 12/11/2023 22:15

Our theme is hot pink, silver and white. Warm white lights.

But it's the same theme and the same decorations since our first Christmas 10 years ago. So not wasteful.

We do pick up a one or two new decorations every year but sticking to the theme. So we have lots of special ones collected over the years that mean something, they just also happen to fit the colour scheme!

DS and I also make decorations every year, salt dough usually, but again, we stick to the colour scheme. So we also still have special decs made by DS.

As a PP said, it doesn't have to be one or the other. We also have lots of glitter and sparkle and the hot pink plus the warm white lights gives a really nice warming colour to contrast the silvers and white.

LightDrizzle · 12/11/2023 22:22

@Vebrithien 🤗

CharlotteStreetW1 · 12/11/2023 22:38

I tend to go for very traditional with a slight Nordic feel. Red, white, green, gold, glass, wood & felt.

Saved me the bother of typing!

This is exactly what mine has evolved into. Lots of European decorations I've collected on my travels over the years.

I've had a hanging lit twig "tree" in the window for the last three years since we got our last clutch of kittens but I might risk a tree again this year and I'll put the wall hanging in our kitchen/diner.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 12/11/2023 22:41

There are mini trees in guest bedrooms with tiny red and gold decorations and white lights instead of bedside lamps.

What a cute idea!

NovemberRain23 · 12/11/2023 22:47

LEDs ruined coloured lights. Too blue and green and harsh.
Other than that I think anything looks amazing. Dated, retro, cheesy, cool, stylish, impressive...anything. It all looks Christmassy one way or another.

curaçao · 12/11/2023 23:26

I buy a xmas decoration or something i can make into a xmas decorationnfrom every holiday or trip we go on.Its lovely reliving the memories every year! So 'meaning' is the theme, not some tacky colour scheme

Vettrianofan · 13/11/2023 06:52

The same as last year and the year before that, and the year before that....

Giggorata · 13/11/2023 07:20

Another red gold and green fan here, interspersed with ancient stuff from our own and the DC's childhoods and some special blown glass ones.
I have a set of Russian glass ornaments from DIL and a Tardis, a witch, a devil, a peacock, etc.
I gave away a load of different coloured Xmas baubles and ornaments, because hosting Xmas has passed on to the younger generation now and we don't bother too much.

Wanttobeok · 13/11/2023 13:05

Purple/silver/white/glass

Purple because it matches the living room but when we decorate (it's due!) I can just change the Purple baubles for another colour or just buy more white and silver. It does look pretty with all the white and glass ornaments
