What Colours are you decorating with this year?

Theoldwoman · 12/11/2023 06:20

I change most years (donate to thrift store and buy different colours from thrift store)

Last year I did green, white and gold.

This year I am doing blue, green and brown.

What about you?

We’ve had silver and white for a good few years now but this year after redecorating I’m adding in gold to go for a mixed metallics kind of theme.

We also have a smaller tree in another room that’s less themed and the children decorate. This one is a mix of old decorations, Disney baubles etc.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/11/2023 08:44

I’ve never done a colour scheme. Our tree decorations are a multi-coloured assortment collected over many years, a few inherited from parents and dating back to when I was little. But IMO our (real) tree still always looks lovely - and perfectly tasteful.

The same non-tree decorations come out every year too, but not many. A few ‘greenery’ garlands and two strings of large ‘Victorian scrap’ type robins, bought ages ago from Past Times. I love those robins!

TeslaTwat · 12/11/2023 08:55

Interesting topic I have been thinking of asking myself. We always do red and gold as it's classic. I saw a pack in b&m that had green so was thinking of adding this. DD has a tree this year in her living room and that will be just gold.

I'm wondering whether I should invest in coloured lights. I normally have warm led in various areas of the house so it all matches so would have mismatching around the house. I used to do the two light thing until they broke. I think warm white is classy and coloured is nostalgic. The issue is coloured LeD aren't the same.

I'm also thinking of doing a garland around the French doors in the living room as I saw it on TikTok and it looks amazing. Our living room is a lot smaller tho so it may be overkill.

TeslaTwat · 12/11/2023 08:59

Also when are you putting this all up? I'm thinking next weekend. I drove through an estate yesterday where loads were up already.

holidaywin · 12/11/2023 08:59

We have a nostalgic mix of rainbow sparkly barf. Three trees - one with everything chucked on it from the last 25 years inc inherited dec. one with vintage decs collected from charity shops and one with only handmade crocheted baubles :)

we are also that houses that brightens up the street with a decorated outside and have a grotto like entrance and lots hanging from the ceiling 😂

I think it's because our house when I was a child was quite bare with a tree going up on the 24th and not a lot else!

DelilahBucket · 12/11/2023 09:00

We always have purples, white and silver with a bit of pale pink thrown in as it matches the decor. There are some other decorations on the tree in other colours though, handmade by DS, gifts, and the drunken robins with wire feet who are always on the sherry within 24 hours.
We don't do trends, just whatever suits us.

HareSong · 12/11/2023 09:13

Deep reds, gold, green and silver. We tried the tasteful classic warm white lights on the tree, but have gone back to our vintage coloured fairy lights. They’re not LED, so still have lovely soft pink, blue, green, gold and red, not the harsh tones of most LEDs.

Baubles collected over the decades. Holly and ivy from the garden. I guess our aesthetic is best described as ‘medieval hall at Yule’ except we live in a terrace 😂.

Oh, and many candles.

Kids are grown up now, but they love that it is the same every year.

You can still buy incandescent bulb lights.

mondaytosunday · 12/11/2023 09:34

Last year it was Nordic White, on the mantle I had five Amsterdam inspired while ceramic houses tea light holders, and dusted it with fake snow.
The year before trad red and green with a lit holly swag and red candles on the mantle, red berry wreath at the door and swags if lit up garland tied up with red bows on the front wall.
This year we are away, so may just go red again for ease, but if we were staying I might do jewel colours (deep plum, maroon etc set off with gold).
The tree is all sorts so is not themed as such.

homeworkismyhell · 12/11/2023 09:39

SparklingSparkle · 12/11/2023 07:41

Am I meant to have a theme each year?
I’m putting up what I have in an array of sparkly chaos.
Use what you have and don’t get sucked into buying more than you need.

I love the phrase 'sparkly chaos'!
This is what we have. Years and years of memories on a tree, decorations collected from places we've been or been given by loved ones.
Nothing matches but it looks amazing

AndyPandyismyhero · 12/11/2023 09:42

I don't do a colour theme. I much prefer the mish-mash of decorations that we have collected over the last 40 or so years. Every item has a memory attached to it and our DC's love to reminisce when they visit over the Christmas period. Lots of ' Do you remember when...?' conversations take place. Our dgc love to hear some of the stories about the decorations and they love to search for the ones we had made for their daddy's first Christmas, or the ones that daddy made at school. We have several sets of lights on the tree, firstly because it is tall (7 ft 6ins) but also because can switch between warm white or colours, depending on the mood.
I love our 'memory tree' and much prefer it to a themed one.

Thank you

Usually go with red and silver/glass for an understated look. Last year did a bit of the candy cane style look by adding some stripey ones.

But this year we have some extra cash so I’ve bought some vintage mercury glass baubles and intend to do a 50s retro tree with tinsel strands so very colourful. I also bought some nice classic coloured baubles. Hope to keep these purchases now and just do variations of what i have each year with one or two unique additions.

I love the idea of having someone’s old cherished bauble collection and keeping it going for many more years. I can’t wait to get the tree up now!

faffadoodledo · 12/11/2023 12:17

My (grown up) children would be appalled if I suddenly started colour coordinating and theming with new stuff. Our tree is an explosion of colour and sparkles and memories.
They come home and immediately there's a reminiscing over the treasures they made 20 years ago, or the souvenir decorations bought on long ago holidays.
This year we'll be adding the treasures we've inherited from Mum's Xmas box. Quite classy real glass baubles to update our own.

LightDrizzle · 12/11/2023 12:33

Another red, gold and green family here with decorations collected over the years. I mourn the death of some of them when they get broken.

I’ve always had white lights since leaving home (30 years ago) but sometimes contemplate the coloured lights of my childhood with nostalgia. We had a succession as they didn’t last long then but some were fancy like little carriages. My mother was also big on tinsel and lammetta and I remember sitting beneath our big, groaning tree in rapturous wonder. Very tasteful trees make me sad but sometimes I think I’ve erred too far in that direction myself.

What Colours are you decorating with this year?
SquashPenguin · 12/11/2023 12:38

I use the same decorations every year. I always buy a new tree ornament on my trips to Germany, their Christmas woodwork shops are so beautiful.

crankit · 12/11/2023 13:18

I've got mainly gold, silver and red decorations from over the years. I do want to add pink in this year though as we're having a new navy sofa, so pink, gold and silver I think!
Won't be putting anything up until the living room in finished though, currently having new flooring laid

brokenhearted2 · 12/11/2023 14:04

friendsfiend · 12/11/2023 06:28

Everything. I like a colourful Christmas and and we add one or two lovely new baubles every year.
Themes make me sad, mainly because there's so much waste and people are changing their decorations every year.

My friend told me beige Christmas is a thing this year. Wtf!

I don't waste. I have lots of Thebes all boxed up. They are chosen as I feel each year. Sometimes I'll pick out bits of two different themes and bring them together. They'll get passed on to the dc eventually. They are all exquisite so not the sort of decorations one would throw out

brokenhearted2 · 12/11/2023 14:04

Frostythereindeer · 12/11/2023 07:04

I'm also thinking of going back to red gold green for a traditional look this year. Anyone that does this, what colour lights do you go with?

We'll still keep last year's ones and use them also elsewhere.

I always use a warm white light whatever colour decs

brokenhearted2 · 12/11/2023 14:08

@justalittlesnoel The old tree that's replaced each year is donated fully decorated, which works well for us!

How does this work? Do you take the tree all decorated to the charity shop?

ItsTapasTime · 12/11/2023 14:10

I use the same decorations I’ve been collecting for 35+ years and add a few new pieces each year, just to mix it up a bit. I don’t throw any decorations out, but some will stay in the attic for years. I only buy naice 😀 traditional decks. You won’t find any purple dinosaurs or burger buns on my tree. This year will be based around the white, gold and clear glass ornaments I have, with bits of greenery collected on dog walks . Lots and lots of warm white lights and candles.

Lemonademoney · 12/11/2023 14:12

Depends on the room 😂 I have three different themes happening this year, one for the lounge, one for the kitchen and another for the dining room….

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 12/11/2023 14:14

Colourful tree but with added decorations. Maybe a Venus flytrap bauble if John Lewis do one!

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 12/11/2023 14:19

For our main tree I will be sticking to my dusky pinks, golds and silver, I’ve built up a nice collection and probably look at changing in a year or 2.

Dining room tree will be all about the grinch this year, last year it was all Elf themed so it will be most of the same decorations. Last year I filled a wired basket/coffee table full of reds and greens and used as a stand for the elf tree, it’s looked really good.

My youngest DD wants a princess tree, I’ve got her a few new princess decs, she already has a lot of Elsa and Anna from a Frozen themed tree my oldest had when they were little. And my pink decs from my main tree will fill it out.

Not sure what my older 2 DDs will do, probably a mix of what we already have.

I’ve done a few themed trees over the years we have a Star Wars one that’s a big hit and I’ve done Harry Potter & food themed tress etc but I’m trying to reduce the number of trees I put up as we just get overwhelmed by them.

I don’t tend to get rid of decorations as I collect them when travelling, I like having a variety I can pick through.

Category7 · 12/11/2023 14:20

@nightinorout you don't need two sets you can buy lights that can be multicoloured, all one colour (red, orange, yellow etc) and white. You just choose the options with a remote control.

I match the room it is in, so there is always a basic theme of glass/clear, white and silver and when I redecorated a couple of years ago I made some mauve glitter baubles to match the general colour scheme of the room. So we have had the same core decorations for year, I occasionally add to it. If anyone is interested in colouring your own baubles you get clear acrylic ones where you can take the top off, pour in clear varnish and then drain the excess out and add glitter of your colour choice. Loads of videos on youtube on how to do this. The glitter stays inside so no glitter everywhere, you can do the same with paint too on the inside.

Dh and I are almost 30 years in to choosing colours together so we have done them all but have stuck with the last lot for at least a decade.
