Hot wheels for 6 year old?

I've never owned a hot wheels track but have seem them in thr shops. Are they too babyish for an almost 6yo? Also - stupid question- how do thr cars move - Is it a mechanical launcher?

I've seen blu track and the UK company that is red but it seems quite ££ for something I'm not definitely sure will be a favorite toy.

Thanks!

My boys are 5 and 7 and play with theirs quite a lot.

They do have mechanical launchers yes - you build the track and shoot them off.

I'd be happy buying it for a 6yr old, but there's a lot on fb marketplace / eBay that would be just as fun and miles cheaper. Much of ours is handed down from cousins.

We have had lots of these, the take up space and seem to be of poor quality in my opinion.

better to buy:

lego
vehicles
remote control vehicles

in my house hot wheels cars always a treat but the sets played with short time, once put away didn’t often come back out.

Hot Wheels is huge in my house, played with daily by my 6yo. He does love cars though. We find them good quality sets.
get one of the big garages or loop sets plus cars and off you go

PanicDisco · 11/11/2023 16:20

Just don't get one of the loop the loop ones with the motor in it. We had to give ours away - The noise is horrendous!! We have a minimal amount of hot wheels as it was never very popular in our house, but depends how into cars your kid is.

i have 3 boys and all have loved/still love hot wheels. We have hundreds of the cars, one of the huge garages, loads of different loops and tracks. It’s not my favourite because it’s big and some are noisy but it’s lasted us well(eldest is 13 and some is his from when he was 4ish). My youngest is 7 and has been using it today. It’s also good in the garden in summer.

Thanks all, I had seen a motorised one so maybe will avoid that, I thought the loop the loop ones did look good though! Ds loves his train set, but wanted to get something more whizzy. He's seen a shark thing but that one seems more gimmicky

My DS absolutely loved hot wheels at this age. The best one was one with parallel tracks that started high up (so the cars move by gravity) so he could race his cars against each other. He used to organise little tournaments for them!

CoodleMoodle · 11/11/2023 16:31

DS is 5 and has been collecting HW since he was about 2, we've got hundreds of them. Also got quite a few playsets, some of them are better than others.

He loves his loop, drag race, ice cream, burger, car wash and prison sets. His favourite is probably the Ultimate Garage but it's obviously very big, it was his main present one Christmas! He also likes the Toxic Gorilla but again that was his "big present" last year.

InTheRainOnATrain · 11/11/2023 16:42

We have HW and they’re the only toy that DS2 and DD6 really play with together. The boys from DD’s class also enjoy playing with them.

TheHawkisHowling · 11/11/2023 16:59

I find those tracks really poor quality and hard to put together.

DS was mad into the cars. His favourite ever was a box of them like you get in the supermarket. His eyes were about a mile wide.

I think it depends how into cars your son is. My son is obsessed with cars, and always has been. We bought the mega city garage with t rex and the monster truck arena with t rex both second hand (£12 each) on Facebook marketplace. I wouldn't want to pay full price. They are played with daily. They take up alot of room so I probably wouldn't buy any more.

Saschka · 11/11/2023 17:12

I’d say 6 yr old is prime Hotwheels age. Very popular in DS’s school right now. Mine loves the Hotwheels cars, not particularly interested in the tracks. Interested in theory, in practice can’t be bothered setting them up and prefer to free play with them.

There are some great colour changer cars though. And there’s also the Hotwheels computer game, so lots of year 1s and 2s are really into the cars as a result of that.
