Does anyone put presents under the tree 'for the whole family'?

Every year I wrap a few presents that are 'for the family', i.e. everyone. Usually this includes at least one family boardgame and a big box of chocolates. Partially it's just so that we have more things to open/do on Christmas, especially us grown ups, but it's also nice to get a new game to play together on the day.

Does anyone else do this, and if so - what items?

Yes. Boardgames and chocolates too.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 08/11/2023 14:41

Yep, boardgames or if there's a console - our Switch was for everyone. Chocolates are already in the kitchen! There have been other things but I can't for the life of me remember them. I do like to have things for the family as a whole, though.

Yes, usually a board game for us to play later in the day

I always take a present for the whole family to my dad's on Christmas Day. Usually something incredibly annoying like tuned whistles that everyone can join in with to play carols. Very amusing while pissed after Christmas Dinner, definitely go in the bin afterwards, never to be seen again!

Yes, family game, chocolates and next years family planner plus anything else i think of. I get them wrapped and under the tree as soon as it's up because i think the tree looks nice with presents under it and we usually don't get any more to put under until the few days before christmas

DappledThings · 08/11/2023 15:51

No. Someone might get a boardgame and everyone will play but it's still their present.

VeridicalVagabond · 08/11/2023 15:56

One big boardgame that takes ages to set up and play for long boring post Christmas/pre new year days (last year's was Arkham Horror) and a couple of shorter, easier games to play slightly drunk on Christmas Day (last year was the Alien boardgame, and Tinderblox).

Yes usually a board game. Used to wrap up DVDs as family presents but we don't watch them anymore so no point.

Yes, nerf guns. I still don’t think we’ve found all the pellet things, was very funny on Xmas morning and continued throughout the holidays

SnowJamz · 08/11/2023 16:12

Yes buy a board game. And sometimes an item to share for the DC. So they want a big item for their dolls this year so it’s a joint gift for them to share.

What a waste! Maybe think about getting something useful/edible instead.

Surely it's the best way for things you'll only buy one of but multiple people in the family will enjoy? Like games consoles, outdoor play equipment, etc. Stops 'it's mine' arguments when you're never going to get your other child a pool table.

ShortColdandGrey · 08/11/2023 16:39

Yes, it is usually a board game or video game. One year, the house got an Alexa for Christmas.

piscofrisco · 08/11/2023 16:58

Yes board games and such. But I also put a present from me to me
Every year so I may not be the best person to ask!

lazysundaymorningcoffee · 08/11/2023 18:47

Yes, often tickets for the whole family to see a show.

Or I get everyone the same thing (gift box of socks for example) and get everyone to either open them at the same time or one by one and really irritatingly as each person opens socks say to the next person 'ooooh you'll never guess what you've got Wink'

ApolloandDaphne · 08/11/2023 18:57

Everything is wrapped and goes under the tree. The dog mostly gives board games. She is excellent at choosing them!

I have fake presents for this reason 🤣

I do not give a family gift because the elves put a board game in our Christmas eve box.

Papillon23 · 08/11/2023 20:04

Family presents yes - things like a smart speaker or a fire stick when they were new things. Or board games.

GeneCity · 08/11/2023 20:08

We do something a bit like this - it's been fancy things for the kitchen, often books that everyone will enjoy, nice things to eat etc.

RumItOver · 08/11/2023 20:13

Yes we have at least one present to the whole family- I help our dog buy the family a board game every year. She likes us to all sit together after a walk on the beach with her so she can snooze on different people's feet 😁
