Do other countries Christmas Adverts go to the lengths British ones do?

Ours seem to be getting grander each year, with people looking forward to the 'big ones' like John Lewis etc. it seems a recent cultural phenomenon here.

Does this happen in other countries?

The Lidl one, with its racoon or whatever it is, made me wonder if it was made for another country and shoved out here as an afterthought, since we don't have racoons here. very odd.

The US invest in their Superbowl adverts from what I can gather

I was in America this time last year. They had Christmas infomercials .they were very sparkly and snowy 😄

It's definitely made for a generic market.

Not so much in SA specifically for Christmas. Maybe because its peak summer here then so all the snow and normal Christmas scenes by the fire and the likes do not apply here.

But Nandos (the chicken chain) do not disappoint all year round, they hop on to anything news worthy. They have excellent marketing.

I wondered that, too. Aimed largely at the US, perhaps? Do they have Lidls?

I have nothing to contribute but I'm interested in the answers to this question.

We don't have meerkats either, but that didn't put off the makers of Corrie. You can buy a plush Lidl raccoon in store, I gather.

Wwwnothingdotcom · 06/11/2023 19:02

Lidl made it for international market.

Iguessillalwaysloveyou · 06/11/2023 19:09

I lived and worked in the USA 1978 to 1980 and even then they were OTT with them.. but they don't pay for TV licence so every channel had them and they had loads and we only had three channels.

DaftyInTheMiddle · 06/11/2023 19:17

I don’t know but I think there was a peak of adverts several years ago, they’re a bit meh now. The previews of the adverts before they”release” them are tedious too.

Here's a German one from 7 years ago for a supermarket called Edeka

Was just about to mention this one.

Bloomin' 'eck! Grandpa fakes his own death to get his family round the table? Imagine the AIBU potential for that Christmas scenario 😂

I saw this ad yesterday and it reminded me of your post. I think it’s set in Europe, looking at the buildings and the street sign that it clambers over, and a quick Google has taught me that they do have raccoons in parts of Europe, which I did not know.
