Not a fan… prefer a good dose of schmaltz at Christmas… not cynicism.

Yes, it’s definitely lacking.

It’s…..meh. M&S, have a selfish Christmas.

not in the Christmas Spirit.

Loopyloooooo · 01/11/2023 08:07

That's a horrible ad. People are selfish enough already, they don't need encouraging!! 😖🤣

DreamItDoIt · 01/11/2023 08:09

Oh dear I don't like that although seems to be a bit of a reflection on how a lot of people act especially since covid 🙁.

EverybodyLTB · 01/11/2023 08:24

I wasn’t mad about it, but didn’t really see it as a bad thing to do what you want at Christmas. I viewed it more from the angle of discouraging people from tying themselves in knots trying to do everything perfectly at Christmas. We see enough threads on here where (usually) women are stretched so thin, and basically sacrifice themselves for everyone else’s wants and needs because it’s Christmas.

I love Christmas, and do loads for the whole season, but it’s mine and my kids way of doing it - not always fitting into what other people see as traditional or right. More and more people are doing it these days, but I’ve had my big dinner on Christmas Eve for years - people used to be horrified and ask if the children minded etc which was ridiculous. I don’t do Elf on the shelf or Christmas Eve boxes either!

Mrsfussypants1 · 01/11/2023 09:28

I've seen a snipit of the Asda one on the George website featuring a famous crooner. Argos snippit I've seen is a doll/dinosaur one which our 7yr old dgd enjoyed. Just about to watch the m&s one. Sorry I can't post link to the ads. Asda one I viewed on George website.

SnowJamz · 01/11/2023 09:32

I am in two minds about the M&S advert. Can’t decide if I like it or not!

I like the Argos ad, fun and nice vibe.

I don't see it as selfish - finishing sticking a million cotton wool balls onto a snowman when you're all dressed up to go out . Putting a childs' loo roll fairy on your tree instead of a tasteful star .
But why was Sophie Ellis Bexter using a blow torch on the white icing ....?

Beats the blazes out of the Fairy cartoon last year

AutumnDay90 · 01/11/2023 11:21

M&S- yeah OK do what YOU want to make YOU happy but not to the extent your destroying someone's board game and throwing it in a fish tank!!!

Asdas made me teary haha 😄

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/11/2023 11:42

Who wouldn;t want to send Elf on the Shelf across the roof tops with a launch that Babe Ruth would've been proud of ... Xmas Grin

vjg13 · 01/11/2023 12:20

I liked M&S, saw it less as selfish, more as no pressure to meet expectations of the Xmas ideal.

Iknownothing · 01/11/2023 12:36

I strongly suspect that the ad is going to backfire on M&S - with lots of parents claiming that their child was traumatised with how the elf on a shelf gets treated.

Tarmaced · 01/11/2023 13:12

Love the M&S one. This is how I feel every Xmas! 🤣

Tarmaced · 01/11/2023 13:14

Oh, love the Asda one too! 😁

BeforetheFlood · 01/11/2023 14:26

Just seen the M&S one and came to see if there was a thread!

I think it came across as very 'let them eat cake', considering the CoL crisis (and climate one.) All dressed up to the sparkly nines in their big fancy houses, surrounded by so much excess that they can afford to blowtorch piles of Christmas cards, chuck board games in the fish tank and litter all the neighbours gardens with non-compostable shiny paper.

I know it's supposed to be humorous and ironic and relatable, but last year I didn't send cards because it was a way of cutting cost, and I haven't bought crackers for the same reason for many years now. (I wonder if all those things are the products they're advertising? If so, it seems more likely to make people think twice about buying them.) Instead of being relatable, it feels very out of touch with the Christmas most people will be having this year - though maybe those people are not the M&S target market so they don't care.

Twazique · 01/11/2023 14:52

I wonder what the real ASDA employees think of that posh break room!

SnowJamz · 02/11/2023 09:39

The Disney advert is very boring! Not been impressed by many so far. Interested to see how good the Asda one will be. And John Lewis.

AnneButNotHathaway · 02/11/2023 10:48

Idk, I like it 😅I don't see how it encourages selfishness tbh, to me it's more about being easy on yourself and not exhaust yourself trying to make a picture perfect everything.

Embelline · 02/11/2023 10:51

There has been a real political backlash against the M&S one on social media

Twazique · 02/11/2023 18:58

I love the M&S advert! Star

Smurfmurf · 03/11/2023 07:12

The Waitrose advert is quite entertaining, the last line made me chuckle. Graham Norton is in it.

Just had a peek.
Yes, I like the Waitrose ad, it’s cheerful and festive.
