My MIL bought me a shopping bag made from old coffee sacks, made by a small local (to the coffee) maker. I absolutely love it, ethical gifts and local produce are my favourite presents.

Precipice · 07/10/2023 13:03

Something based on what your niece likes. Ask her. She must have likes and interests.

I'm a little younger than your niece and most of the suggestions here wouldn't work for me. A lot are very hit and miss where the broad category might be fine, but where people usually have specific preferences. Someone used to get me Lily O'Brien chocolates as part of a gift - other family members ended up enjoying that as their dessert chocolates are really not to my taste.

theduchessofspork · 07/10/2023 13:09

Take me out to lunch or cocktails

You can send an IOU if we don’t live near each other

Ponderingwindow · 07/10/2023 13:13

Boo to all the Lego haters.
i love getting Lego as a gift.

Adult Lego is amazing. though I do often curse Lego for imposing what I now call the “lego tax” on me when they come out with an expensive set I can’t resist.

CharlieBigPotatoes1 · 07/10/2023 13:13

Something from Present Indicative or the V&A museum shop.

Its5656 · 07/10/2023 13:23

For all of those saying they'd like Cashmere socks, I got some yesterday in Tkmaxx for £6.99.

EdgeK · 07/10/2023 13:24

Get their address.
Book a Waitrose delivery for them along the theme of 'a perfect night in'. Bottle of their preference. Some bath stuff. Cheese and bits.
Get them to agree a time and let Waitrose take the strain.
It's in plastic bags sure, but less recycling and gifts straight to the point.
(I've lived on this the last few christmases 😂)

Lego flower bouquet!
Or just nothing. An adult who can buy themselves anything they want doesn't really need £50+ worth of presents.

Why does it have to be about need?!

KeiraKnightley2 · 07/10/2023 13:26

Thia sounds fantastic @EdgeK - I'm 31 and would love this!

Anything but an expensive candle, just don't get the attraction. Lidl has knock off ones for £4 that smell just as good

You should read up about candles.

BeastOfBODMAS · 07/10/2023 13:44

I’d like a ‘case’ of really nice quality soft drinks: posh cordial, pop, pre mixed mocktails.
I drink either tap water or excellent wine, so this would be a real treat for January

supplycaptain · 07/10/2023 13:44

I’m mid 20s and earn £40k - theoretically I can buy myself what I want, but mentally some items are in “treat” territory so I haven’t made the purchase.

I’d also like to caveat that I would be really grateful for any gift, whatever it is. I’m not fussy nor do I critique gifts or the budget etc! Your niece is likely the same as me and will be happy with whatever you get her.

However I think if you want to get her exactly what she wants, ask to see her Amazon or asos etc wishlist? if she’s anything like me, she probably has a list of things she’d like but hasn’t purchased yet. Those things might not necessarily be obvious. I haven’t told anyone that there’s a fancy, futuristic kettle I like for example.

Interested in the kettle! 😁

I’m in this category and I would honestly be delighted with nearly every suggestion on this thread, except a) nothing (wtf?) b) a charity gift (unless specifically requested by the receiver it comes across as incredibly judgemental and frankly I don’t much trust what those things claim to be spent on so I’d see it as both rude and very wasteful) or c) any kind of plant (they inevitably bring flies into the house.) I don’t own any Lego but I’d find it very cute if someone bought me Lego flowers. Or dried flowers are fab as they don’t bring the fly problem and they last.

CleoCha0man · 07/10/2023 13:52

Ask her! Or as @supplycaptain says, ask for her amazon wishlist.
Quite honestly the way I see it is that unless you ask, you are spending what many of us here perceive as quite a lot of money on a bit of a gamble- will she like it or not?
It really does add to making a stressful Christmas to be hell bent on getting a person that perfect present that they didn't even know they wanted until you gave it to them!

Caveat: am not a fan of the weight of gift giving but I'm aware that some people enjoy it

StamppotAndGravy · 07/10/2023 13:53

I like socks, pants, books and chocolate, other edibles, and maybe a scarf or gloves. Honestly, I have enough money that anything that's luxury I will spend more than €100 and choose myself, especially since my flat is too small to keep anything I don't love. I'd rather be bought the things I'm too lazy to buy myself and know that the buyer saved the money to treat themselves rather than risk them buying me something that goes to the charity shop.

The one thing I would like at the moment that doesn't fall in the generic collection is a good quality hamam towel.

Edited

Had to google! They’re really nice, very different. Thanks!

BestIsWest · 07/10/2023 14:36

DD (30) would love the Lego. Tickets for the Chanel exhibition at the V&A or the Yayoi Kusama at Tate Modern or a show.

Houseplanter · 07/10/2023 14:40

@Agnorant those air plants are fab.. do you have them? If so would love to know how big they are and if they're easy to keep alive Smile

A voucher for a massage, beauty treatment, or restaurant I like.

This, or a cream tea. Or a cinema voucher.
