Why are the only things I can think of rude?

OneCup · 07/10/2023 10:22

Tickets for a show, or massage, or subscription of some kind

ErinAndTonic · 07/10/2023 10:22

Amazon gift card
Nice bottle of gin
Posh chocolates
Seasonal candle
An experience - depending on interests eg. Cooking class, activity
Cinema voucher
Foreign currency if she has trips booked
Gift card to a store where she can buy the above or more

Bobbielikespeas · 07/10/2023 10:25

Something she wouldn't normally treat herself to perhaps even if she can afford it? Hard to say without knowing her likes and dislikes. My wish list would be a luxury white company bathroom robe haha😂 Luxury food hamper? Massage voucher as others have said?

Ashleysaidwhat · 07/10/2023 10:45

Please don't buy Lidl or Aldi knock off candles. They just aren't the same. I'm 38 so maybe a bit older than your niece but similar as I buy myself what I want and I am a nightmare to buy for.

I would like

Voucher for JL
White company anything esp their bed socks
Voucher for Astrid and Miyu
A good vodka not flavoured
Hotel chocolate selection and a bottle of the Black Forest cream

No Lego I don't know any of my friends or family who would be impressed with that. I also think it's really sad that the first response was to say don't buy her anything. Everyone likes a gift

Merrow · 07/10/2023 10:47

Really nice pyjamas. I always want better ones, but they always seem like such a stupidly extravagant purchase

cherryassam · 07/10/2023 10:49

Books you think I’d like

Tickets to a theatre show

cashmere socks

Snowontheroof · 07/10/2023 10:59

A voucher for a one day course in something - for instance near me you can do a "taster" stone carving course, but there's jewellery making, screen printing etc. - or maybe something sporty like wind surfing?

Alarae · 07/10/2023 11:00

Hm. I'm actually 30 and personally I would love:

Oliver Bonas gift card (I love their stuff but can't justify the expense for what it is)
Lego flower bouquet (I have the wildflowers)
An experience to do something

I have to admit I am loving the retro era at the moment, currently sat in my Care Bears t shirt! Does she have and specific interests you can indulge?

If you are close to your niece, would she enjoy doing an experience with you? Whether that is afternoon tea, an escape room, wandering around London etc. I would love something like that, as while I have the money to buy what I want I don't necessarily have someone who can do it with me!

Mrsfussypants1 · 07/10/2023 11:00

A dreamland heated throw
A plant from Hortology and a book
Tickets for an event or restaurant

I think this goes to show it really depends on her taste - I’m 34 and would absolutely not want to receive anything you’ve listed but I love Lego and would be delighted with the Lego flowers (or any cool set).

I wouldn’t want anything from JL or the white company or brands in that ilk because I prefer quirky independent brands or shopping second hand for environmental or ethical reasons, I never really drink alcohol at home, I don’t like cooking so wouldn’t want any kitchen accessories. I am in the position of being able to buy myself anything I want, so for me unless someone REALLY knew my taste, I’d hate something generic and high-street and would rather be taken for an amazing dinner or just given money tbh.

griegwithhimandhim · 07/10/2023 11:10

A ticket to the Chelsea Flower Show. £80 should just about do it Grin

This is also a good idea, a craft course or adventure day if she’s into that

whimsical1975 · 07/10/2023 11:18

Truthfully, I’d love to receive a note that said my gift was… providing clean drinking water to a child for a year, or providing reading lessons for adults who can’t read, or supporting farmers in 3rd world countries etc… If I was in the position where I could literally buy myself anything then having my gift be the knowledge that I’ve supported a really worthy cause would honestly make me really happy!

Have a look at this site because there are SO many charity options at many different price points - you could hand it over with some chocolate, flowers, wine etc?

I would hate Lego.

And getting her a cleaner to do a clean is so rude.

I'm not even a fan of the white company.

I'd go for premium bonds, I like a gamble

Bbq1 · 07/10/2023 11:31

Book vouchers

DH once gave me a one armed bandit for a present.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 07/10/2023 11:56

Tickets to a show

RedAndWhiteCarnations · 07/10/2023 12:08

For someone who doesn’t need anything and can’t buy themselves whatever they want, I’d go for something personal.
Im thinking home made sloe gin, cookies etc… An ‘experience’ to share (theatre ?)

For me, I’d rather receive something that has been thought out, where the person has made an effort than yet another product or experience that I could buy myself (better because it round exactly to my taste)

uhtredofbattenberg · 07/10/2023 12:13

Lego flowers is a good idea.
Does she like Crafts? Something along the lines of a kit where you can build a room.
Decor ?
Jewellery?

Houseplanter · 07/10/2023 12:19

Oh you're good!!

Neice is sorted and so is daughter in law!

Thank you so much x

I'd throttle someone if they bought my Lego flowers. Just more plastic in our environment.

For me (also in 30s)
-Highest quality organic fairtrade chocolates
-Expensive organic olive oil
-Anything from Neal's Yard
-Handmade earrings
-A piece of art that they know I would like
-A lovely houseplant
-John Lewis voucher always good as most of their stuff is quality and lasts

PegasusReturns · 07/10/2023 12:53

I love lego but understand it’s divisive.

Most if my friends fall into the can buy anything category. I tend to go one of three ways:
Tokens like cashmere socks; chanel nail varnish, diptyque candles, Dior lip oil etc;

books

experiences (V&A membership, chelsea flower show, dinner)

nobleisle · 07/10/2023 12:55

Deff a white company candle but the autumn scent as it's so much nicer than winter

DisforDarkChocolate · 07/10/2023 12:55

I'd enjoy something to do with you. Tickets for Chanel at the V&A if they weren't already booked
