There's 1st December boxes now? Bloody hell.

1st December box in this house is the little flap you open that says 1 on it and contains a tiny piece of crappy chocolate.

Christmas eve is new pyjamas so they don't look like shit in the Xmas morning photos, plus hot chocolate ingredients.

@MrsDanversChickenSandwich what is this obsession with "plastic tat" ?
Not all products made from plastic are "tat".
Most seasonal things I buy aren't plastic - or if they are it's because I want it to last for years so plastic is best - because it lasts for years!

Good for you.

But it's not really about you,

Surely you must be aware that the majority of Halloween boxes, 1st December boxes. etc. are not going to be filled with pieces that will pass through the generations. It’s seasonal bits and bobs from Home Bargains et al.

Again, not about you. So you can relax.

Difficult to celebrate Christmas 25 December - 5 January when we don’t believe in advent and 12th night. You have your dates and we have ours.

How can you “not believe in” calendar dates? That’s as stupid as saying that you don’t believe that Easter exists.

Needmorelego · 04/10/2023 13:10

@MrsDanversChickenSandwich yes but these type of threads always descent into a "isn't plastic tat and throwaway culture such a dreadful thing etc etc" when I think most people aren't into that.

Needmorelego · 04/10/2023 11:26

@80sMum so where do you keep your Christmas decorations and when do you get them out?

The Christmas decorations are in the loft. If we're having a Christmas tree (which we don't have every year nowadays) I usually put it up about a week before Christmas, so that's when the decorations would come out.

I think we might have a tree this year, as we've family coming just after Christmas. I don't tend to bother if it's just going to be me and DH that will see it.

Those are dates followed by the Christian calendar - we aren’t.

@jolaylasofia yep - 12 Days of Christmas (December 25th - 6th Jan). Advent is for most of December. Much more than "one day".
Christmas "Day" obviously is - but there's all the other days.

are you a church going christian then? don't think many of us are in all honesty and kids have no clue what it is either. Christmas is 1 day. the run up to it is not christmas. You can call it advent or whatever but it's not christmas

jolaylasofia · 04/10/2023 13:37

Needmorelego · 04/10/2023 12:48

@Mademetoxic surely most children will have outgrown last year's PJ's so would need new ones anyway.

mine are 14 and 15 and still wearing theirs from last year. Only reason they are getting new ones is because they have worn the hell out of them and have holes on the crotch and all sorts.
My 21 month old has obviously grown out of his onesie

Needmorelego · 04/10/2023 13:45

@80sMum I would call that "getting out your Christmas Box" then.

Needmorelego · 04/10/2023 13:48

@jolaylasofia I believe you are celebrating the cultural event called "Xmas" then - not the Christian event of "Christmas".
Most people I know do a mix of the two. But "You Do You" as they say 🙂

we definitely celebrate Christmas culturally not XMAS and I'm an atheist. Husband is muslim.

EarthlyNightshade · 04/10/2023 13:52

Needmorelego · 04/10/2023 12:24

@MrsDanversChickenSandwich does it matter what people call it though?
(actually I have never heard of anything called a "boo box" - I have seen storage boxes with pumpkins etc on but never actually called a boo box).
@EarthlyNightshade I haven't seen anyone say they are giving actual gifts. I mean the mention of pyjamas etc aren't classed as gifts in my mind. You'd buy new jammies if your kids need them even if Christmas didn't exist.

People are putting in oodies, art stuff, books, mugs, etc. In my mind these are gifts. Stuff for the Christmas day stocking - and an oodie as an actual present.
I'd buy my kids standard or logo-ed pyjamas, not something with Christmas on them. And if they didn't need them at Christmas, then they wouldn't get them til they did.
And putting them in a box creates an expectation that you get a box that day every year.
I am not against this as such, but for those who find Christmas a struggle, the expectation that these things are given and are not gifts creates a lot of financial pressure.

Needmorelego · 04/10/2023 13:54

@jolaylasofia what I meant was that "Christmas" is the Christian event (clue is in the name - Christ) but Xmas is more the cultural stuff that doesn't really have anything to do with the birth of Christ and is a combination of various different cultures and rituals.
The eating turkey, dressing up in a silly seasonal jumper, reindeers and snowmen, putting up a tree etc.
That's what I meant 🙂

Needmorelego · 04/10/2023 13:58

@EarthlyNightshade well yes some people do go over the top.
Some people also give stocking presents and "token" presents that I would just call "presents" 😂

RaraRachael · 04/10/2023 14:03

When my children were little, they used to have an advent calendar which started on December 1st - no box or special breakfast. I get the tree and decorations down from the loft on about the 9th and put all the stuff up. I enjoy the anticipation of Christmas but once the 25th is past, I've had enough so the stuff usually comes down around the 29th.
I think a lot of people like to compare what their December 1st/Christmas Eve boxes contain on Instagram and feel their kids will miss out in some way if they don't have all this shite stuff.

When does it all end?

Needmorelego · 04/10/2023 14:04

@EarthlyNightshade I actually find the cosy Christmas pyjamas a bit odd because it never feels very cold at Christmas. February/March is when you need snuggly PJ's!

Now don't start with your family Valentine's boxes please! 😂

Needmorelego · 04/10/2023 14:33

@EarthlyNightshade you're safe there... don't do anything really for Valentine's Day apart from maybe buy some cakes with pink cream on.

greengobbledygook · 04/10/2023 15:07

This thread must have provided the most useless replies to a question ever! 😂

MeinKraft · 04/10/2023 15:14

You know what might sell, a New Years Day box with a copy of the Slimming World book, a pair of 2kg dumbbells and one of those motivational water bottles!

Riverlee · 03/10/2023 21:50

Never heard of December 1st boxes. Never did Christmas Eve boxes, and thankfully missed the Elf trend due to dc being too old when it became A Thing.

what happened to a simple sticking, and presents in Christmas day?

You sound just like me!

Needmorelego · 04/10/2023 15:34

@greengobbledygook kind of....the OP asked what people put in boxes. A few people gave answers of what they do - but most were all "arrrrrrgh plastic tat...what is this hell...blah blah".
If it isn't your thing you didn't really need to reply.

You are a horrible parent who is depriving your children of the MAGICAL experience of the Valentines Day holiday😉

It doesn't end, it just escalates.
