What do you put in 1st December boxes vs Christmas Eve boxes??

It always makes me wonder how certain threads end up in active before they've even had a reply. It's almost like an invitation to pile on and make the OP feel like shit. Even well established posters join in year after year. Pathetic.

December 1st - I bring out the Christmas clothing that fits, if they've outgrown it they will get new Xmas pjs or a jumper. Christmas story books from the loft and advent calendars.

Christmas Eve - no box but these were "a thing" back in the 70s and 80s. Ours was wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper and my mum had followed on from her mum before. Here we go out to see the lights on local houses and then home for a film before bed.

You think there's a conspiracy against Christmas? Run by MN... Or is it that MN are starting the threads themselves to boost ratings by vilifying Christmas?

Or, it's late and there are fewer threads late. So they all end up in Active.

We should feel a bit crap about rampant consumerism and throw away, one-use clothes and bedding. Shouldn't we? I mean it's dreadful for the environment.

Parker231 · 04/10/2023 02:55

Don’t do any boxes or Elf. Supermarket advert calendars are enough. Managed to drop the Christmas jumpers - hate them!

I make my nieces December 1st boxes (bags). I find a Christmas themed blanket from Asda or something, a new Christmas cup, a Christmas book or colouring book and Christmas pyjamas mainly!

What do you do with the blanket, mug and pajamas from the previous year?

Kissmas · 04/10/2023 03:35

Since when is 9.30 late for social media? It's an extremely active time on here. "One use clothes and bedding"? Not in my house, or most others if you actually read the threads on this subject before piling on.

It happens every single year and it's the same old shit pedalled out to make people feel rotten about themselves. There's nothing like a December 1st box thread to bring the "I'm oh so better than you" squad out.

mathanxiety · 04/10/2023 03:45

Yikes, Christmas creep really is a thing...

You could do Advent candles?

Topseyt123 · 04/10/2023 04:09

No December 1st boxes in this house. Nor Christmas Eve ones either. Bugger that for a game of soldiers.

We never had an Elf on the Shelf either. Elf can fuck right off!!

My kids have reached their twenties now and are unscathed.

1st we do pjs and calender, maybe a book. Xmas eve is an activity- art usually, colouring book, hotchoc, night before Christmas book.

A new Night before Xmas book every year?!

TheSpikySpinosaurus · 04/10/2023 04:36

TravellingT · 04/10/2023 01:00

1st- PJs, bedding, bedroom christmas decs e.g. little tree and baubles, tinsel etc some chocs, a christmassy dress each, hair clips. List writing set, festive books,

Eve- special pjs, outfit for xmas day, stocking to hang on their mantels, christmas eve book

You're kidding, right?

I don't do a Christmas Eve box. I do have a box that comes out on 1st December though and it just has Christmas books, dvds (it's old), Christmas mugs in, some cookie cutters, Christmas writing paper, recipes etc it sits under the tree and just means we can do nice Christmassy things with the contents. My favourite thing in it is a photo album that I've been adding to for years with just a few photos of Christmassy things we've done each year. I like to think one day it'll be a family heirloom but in reality nobody gives a shit about it except me after too much wine when I start to get emotional about the dog's first Christmas/my gran's last Christmas etc etc.

It's sentimental rather than consumerist (in my opinion) because I'm not buying shit to put in it every year, unless the writing paper runs out, because it's things that bring us joy year after year.

Now this is nice!

Namechangedone · 04/10/2023 04:51

On the 1st, I don't have a box but DD gets an advent calendar, Christmas PJ's (which are worn until DD grows out of them, not just for December) a Christmas activity book and we have a Christmas themed breakfast that day. Usually Christmas tree shaped pancakes or waffles.

On Christmas Eve, we have a box (that DD has had since her first Christmas) with the Christmas postman & night before Christmas books (same books each year) activity book, a bath bomb, hot chocolate, plate for Santa, reindeer food making ingredients, and a jigsaw or board game.

Fifireee · 04/10/2023 04:56

You don’t need December 1st box or a Christmas Eve box it's all marketing BS.
What you do need is a ton of money when they become teenagers or go to university. Stick the money you were going to spend on things they don't need in an account. Christmas is enough!!

justwantobeamum · 04/10/2023 05:05

Last year baby ds got a Xmas eve box with pjs, a Santa plate, reindeer food and night before Christmas book (my old book my mum kept). The box, plate and book are all up the loft and will be recycled on Xmas eve year after year.

as he gets a bit older my plan is to do advent calendar, pjs and the box of Christmas books down from the loft (mostly all my old books) on 1st dec then on 24th he will get the same box every year with the same Santa plate, some reindeer food and maybe an activity to do on 24th like a ginger bread house or something.

there will be no actual “box” for a 1st dec “box” although he does have a 24th dec one I bought from home bargains last year and plan to use every year.

New bedding every year? As my grandmother would say, more money than sense.

You buy them a new stocking every year?

And multiple sets of Christmas themed pyjamas?

What do you do with last years, throw them in the bin?

New bedding every year? As my grandmother would say, more money than sense.

Textile waste and production is one of the leading causes of climate crisis, but so long as people in the west have their new seasonally themed bedding every year I guess that's cool.

barneythedino · 04/10/2023 05:49

On the 1st the elf brings an advent calendar and a new Christmas book. Christmas Eve we get family pjs, a bath bomb, hot chocolate, chocolate Santa, some Christmas themed activities.

Every year since DS was born (5 years ago) we have bought new Xmas pjs for us all, this year I've discovered Vinted so me and DH and wearing old ones and I've found matching ones for DS and DD so we are all in the same. So normally Christmas pjs can cost £65/70 this year they cost me £3.50 plus postage!

decionsdecisions62 · 04/10/2023 06:26

Jesus ! Not another pre Xmas celebration ! Do we not spend enough already. Just stop!

hoophoophooray · 04/10/2023 06:28

Nothing because their birthdays are 2nd and 7th December and honestly I am done with the whole thing

advent calendar, then DVD for a film night on Christmas Eve and that's it.

Hollyhead · 04/10/2023 06:29

I don’t think many people do a 1st December box with new stuff in - I think when people say ‘bedding’ they mean they get the Christmas bedding they already own in it, and other Christmassy stuff they own etc.

ChaToilLeam · 04/10/2023 06:34

An advent calendar, that’s it!

Soontobe60 · 04/10/2023 06:44

Nothing - because I’m not a slave to consumerism!

letmesailletmesail · 04/10/2023 06:47

We don't do 1st December boxes but they wake up that morning and their duvets have "magically" swapped into their Christmas ones and they come down to find their Christmas PJs on the table along with a new Christmas themed book, their advent calendars & the box of books from previous Christmases as well as any tickets for anything we're doing in the run up to Christmas (this includes home made tickets for a walk around the lights in a neighbouring village). Their Christmas plates & bowls will be out too.
Well, that is what used to happen. They are now teens. They will get an advent calendar and grunt a thank you.
I have to say I don't miss swapping the duvet any more. It worked so well when DC1 was little and always kicked her duvet off. DC2 has his wrapped around him like a mummy so easing that off and swapping it was a right pain!

EfficientlyDecluttering · 04/10/2023 06:48

Yes, I was assuming the mugs, bedding etc are the same ones each year out away in January. When ours were younger we got out the Christmas DVDs, mugs, bedding etc on Dec 1st, as well as Advent calendars but it was all saved from the year before. Then on Christmas Eve we did food preparation, watched Norad tracks Santa, put out carrots, mince pies and a drink for Santa and the reindeer. Didn't do boxes - I tried it once with hot choc, bath bomb, craft activity etc but they weren't really interested and I felt it was too much, better to have these things as stocking presents, PJs were a Christmas day present here too.

lollipoprainbow · 04/10/2023 06:49

Advent calendar and Christmas PJ's is my limit. Such a cruel mummy !!

Alliolly · 04/10/2023 06:53

1st of December - advent calendar, Christmas socks, Christmas jumpers, book and Christmas craft bits. Might add a selection of hot chocolate and marshmallows this year to have throughout December.

We don't do Christmas eve box.
