Nothing. No one needs 1st December boxes if they’re getting presents 24 days later. Advent calendar, that’s it.

Consumer culture, jeez

Absolutely this. Grab grab grab

Daisydovetail · 04/10/2023 07:01

I assume the person who said bedding means the same bedding as last year - they’re won’t buying a new Christmas bedding every year.

On 1st I have a box that has the elf, all the Christmas books we’ve collected over the years (one new one) the advent calendars (material ones with pockets so we just buy new chocolates each year) random bits of half done Christmas craft stuff from over the years, Christmas pjs (ok I’ll accept consumerism on this one) and advent candle. I’ve kept all the Christmas playmobil figures from an advent calendar years ago and the kids still love setting the scenes up, that’s all in there too. I suppose it’s our version of a nativity scene. Basically anything Christmas themed that’s not decorations is in that box and comes out on the first, mugs etc.

Then on the 24th the stockings, carrot etc and night before Christmas book (old)

Not much is actually bought new each year. New advent chocolates, the candle, one new book to read together in December and the pjs.

SpringIntoChaos · 04/10/2023 07:01

What fresh consumeristic hell is this?? FFS! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Absolutely nothing! Because it's ridiculous!

Guessguess · 04/10/2023 07:02

Obviously the stuff in them is the same every year! Other than new pjs if they've grown, my kids are titches so sometimes they don't even need new pjs!

1st Dec - Christmas jumper, 2nd hand pjs (hand me down plus new for eldest off vinted), all the Christmas teddies out the loft, Christmas mugs, the elf arrives and brings the wooden advent calendar which has a choc and an activity / challenge each day (eg watch a Christmas movie)

Christmas eve - Christmas board game and puzzle (same ones), new Christmas eve pjs (matching but off vinted), hot choc and the plate for Santa.

Hardly a horrific commercialised destroyer of the planet is it

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 04/10/2023 07:03

The massive over consumerism is one of the reasons I stopped having any truck with Christmas.

When the DC were small they had advent calendars. Fortunately elf on a shelf had not been invented.

Amabilis · 04/10/2023 07:04

1st December is when they get advent calendar, Christmas story book and Xmas pjs. (Becuase I want them to be worn more than 1 bloody night)

Surely nobody only wears PJs for one night? After Christmas they’re just another set of pyjamas.

Bertiesmum3 · 04/10/2023 07:08

Mine were lucky if I remembered to get them advent calendar’s before the 1st!! 🤣

Shraree · 04/10/2023 07:10

Jesus Christ. If a new mum who happens to be reading this can I just say:

  • you don't have to have a 1st December box
  • you don't have to do elf on the shelf
  • you don't have to do Christmas Eve boxes
  • and you can still have a magical Christmas.
It's commercialised crap designed to make mums (specifically mums) feel like crap unless they buy into it.

New bedding every year? As my grandmother would say, more money than sense.

Where has anyone said they get new bedding every year?

Boredatwork1234 · 04/10/2023 07:11

CallieQ · 04/10/2023 00:49

This with Xmas bells on

Not what the OP asked, they asked what you put in your boxes. If you don’t then the answer is we don’t do them or nothing.

SunRainStorm · 04/10/2023 07:12

Marketing genius - convincing people to buy a set of pyjamas for every member of their family to wear for less than one month.

And then the next year the children are a size up so they get to sell you a whole new set because they've convinced you that this is a tradition now.

Mindless consumption.

Fair enough, that sounds lovely. But there is just so much Christmas crap in the shops mums are encouraged to buy into. It's quite grotesque.

SadlyACupOfTeaDoesNotSolveEverything · 04/10/2023 07:14

30th Nov I put on the kids Christmas bedding (the same sets I purchased in 2014).

1st Dec the DC get a pair of Christmas pyjamas (new) and and to open the first day of the advent calendar.
We bring out the Christmas mugs (purchased in 2018) and have hot chocolate whilst watching a film.

Advent calendar contains chocolate coins and festive activities like pantomime, local market, carol concert, cinema trip etc (basically our usual December weekend activities) plus ‘baking’ or ‘film night’ etc.

Christmas Eve hamper contains a few well thumbed books we have had for up to 20yrs, a box of chocolates and popcorn to share when watching a film and new (non festive) pyjamas for anyone staying over on Christmas Eve.

Dnendns · 04/10/2023 07:14

I do December the first box…. The elf brings them.

In mine are Xmas Pjs, some sort of Xmas cup/mug, advent calendar each, some sort of Xmas themed sweets/chocolate, posh popcorn, Xmas blanket.

other years Iv put in there a cadburys chocolate house kit, nice hot chocolate, Xmas themed fluffy socks, paint your own Xmas cookie which I had made, Xmas tree bauble decorating kit to add to the tree, novelty Xmas glasses to wear to school, Santa letter writing kit.

they also get their Xmas bedding put on and we watch a movie on December the first after the tree has been decorated.

pizzaHeart · 04/10/2023 07:15

Usually the same stuff as in 1st November box.

specialk9 · 04/10/2023 07:15

1st December - I put their Christmas bedding on (not new) and lay Christmas pyjamas (new) on the bed and their elf (Jellycat Leffy Elf) which just stays in their room to 'keep an eye on them'. They also get an advent calendar and we write our letters to Father Christmas. The little ones also get a book.

Christmas Eve - we always have a 'movie' Night so they get a box of hot choc, marshmallows, glass mug + spoon (used every year) and some treats and popcorn.

AnotherCountryMummy · 04/10/2023 07:18

Some people need to calm down. OP is asking a question. If others don't agree, there's no need to berate her.

I do a December box, but it's not a wasteful thing. It's builds excitement and helps my kids to enjoy the darkest, shortest month. Ours contains their Xmas pjs. Passed down between three, FYI! Their advent calendars, an advent candle that we all enjoy. About 5 or 6 Xmas books (same each year) then a couple of new things - hot chocolate, Christmas colouring book, sticker book etc.

I don't do a Christmas Eve box as it doesn't get enough use.

Haters gonna hate and all that, but I've enjoyed starting this tradition.

I also love PP's idea about adding a photo album of past chirstmasses. I might do this!

AnotherCountryMummy · 04/10/2023 07:20

I will also include tickets or details to any festive things we are doing throughout December.

Dessertinthedesert · 04/10/2023 07:20

1st - christmas bedding on, advent calendar and Christmas books toys/ out of the loft
24th - PJs, new book and a bath bomb

No twee boxes involved.

dressedforcomfort · 04/10/2023 07:23

1st Dec boxes??? WTF?

I have systematically held out against this tradition of buying increasing amounts of stuff. Kiddo doesn't value it, we have no space for it, it's bad for the planet most of the time and it's all just consumer shite.

Kiddo gets an advent calendar before Christmas, that's it. If we want to be festive then we bake cookies, watch Christmas movies, or go for walks around the neighbourhood to look at the lights.

Dnendns · 04/10/2023 07:25

I buy new blankets, pjs and mugs every year.
Same Xmas bedding though.

SharonEllis · 04/10/2023 07:26

Nothing. Luckily my kids are happy with an advent calendar & we try to avoid all the christmas-themed tat that ends up in landfill. We bring down the xmas books that we've had for years, some were mine, when we put the tree up. That is sometime in December when it fits in, but I wouldn't add to the pressure of xmas by making December 1st 'a thing'. And try not to buy into the consumer frenzy. Do your own thing. Make your own traditions.

If it’s this - then that sounds sweet (although I like Christmas to be a shorter season myself - other than the advent calendar run up - because it feels more special that way.)

But if it’s an excuse for buying more shit, then what fresh hell is this, etc

But in answer to the qu OP - nothing. I had never heard of a 1st dec box and we don’t do Christmas boxes.

IggityZiggity · 04/10/2023 07:27

Surely people just put the same bedding, mug, stocking etc. in every year?
