I have a 5 year old DGS who is fanatical about ocean creatures and can name every type of shark and whale. Can anyone suggest a Christmas present for him. No budget lol

bambier · 03/10/2023 21:03

The Schleich figures are lovely realistic toys & they do lots of different types of sea creatures

IKEA have got some great ones at the moment now as well

I also thought of jellycat!

We recently got some fun water squirting bath toys that are sea creatures. From Dunelm.

Does he like Octonauts? Could go for some books/activity books/playset.

Some realistic animal toys.

Soft toys.

Trip to an aquarium.

Hidden worlds habitat books in a trio

There’s a cool thing called Deep Blue Seascape he might like by Clockwork Soldier. The Flying Eye Books are good. My ocean obsessed boy has Obsessive About Octopuses and I’m going to get Smart About Sharks next. Highly recommend the big ikea octopus. I got a bag of lots of wee sea creatures cheap off Amazon a few years back and they are played with loads. I might get him a snorkel for Christmas so he can play at being a marine biologist diving in the bath!

Thank you so much

This is a great 3 in 1 ocean lego set. With a bit of help an average 5 year old should be able to do it even though it says 7+

if you had a bit more to spare though I’d get a ticket to an aquarium with a walk through shark tunnel - depends where you are in the country! You can often get 2 for 1 type deals with a bit of searching.

Halftoys do some brilliant ocean creature toys / models (among other things) which you can take apart and come with a background that you create, take a look at this link www.half-toys.com/product/44/ and see - there are a few independent sellers of them if you look online. We got ours from an independent toy shop. The animal comes apart and you can take out their skeleton. My son loves his!

I love the jumbo ones

I feel like this is my specialist subject as my 2 year old son is exactly the same - obsessed with all things sea creature - especially whales!

I second the ideas of schleich figures (not cheap but so realistic and last really well) and the IKEA sea life soft toys - we have the whale with the zipper mouth (perfect for PJ storage) and the orca.

Usborne do some great ‘my first sticker’ books - we have coral reef and narwhals/whales. I think another poster mentioned the ‘look/peep inside’ books - they do lovely ones on the coral reef and oceans. We also have a book called The Storm Whale which is a real favourite and part of a series.

Rex London do a great ocean matching game - really great quality cards and box with species names on. There is also a small company called ‘Button and Squirt’ who do animal facts cards - we have the sharks set and the whales one.

Octonauts play sets are a favourite here too!

My 5 yr old is the same with sea creatures and specifically, Megladons! I’ve found it quite hard to source bits but I ended up getting a remote control shark that you put in water so he can have fun on the beach or at the local pond. I found a few realistic looking ones on Amazon and he has asked for the mega chomp shark from Smyths.

Obviously dependant on his parents agreement 😁 but perhaps an idea could be to have a full wall painted with an ocean life, or under the sea mural (would be dependant on sourcing a good artist) - alternatively places like Etsy have some of the most beautiful sea-life wall paper ranging from virtual experience under sea scenes to more gentle child-like paint effect sea life imagery.

Just a different idea ☺️
