Ds11 is just getting into drawing and would enjoy exploring this more. Any ideas for beginners art kits? Could be any type of drawing/painting.
Thanks

I was about to ask the exact thing for my DD!

There are so many tutorials online I'm not sure I would go for a kit as such. A good sketch pad, some nice, thick paper for watercolours and then a box of paints, good pens and maybe a set of tinted charcoal. And masking tape. Dd likes to tape her paper to the table so it doesn't slip. If just experimenting most of the stuff sold in The Works is decent for watercolours, pens ans sketch pad. Can upgrade if they use it a lot.

Oh and posca pens.

cherryassam · 01/10/2023 17:27

2nd posca pens - niece who likes arts / crafts loves them

Also decent paper

Places like Hobbycraft sell great "mixed media" boxes which include a bit of everything. Once she's found what she prefers (pencils, a particular paint, etc) you can "upgrade." Also, as PP have said, lots of sketchbooks of differing sizes. The key to getting good at art is to do it a lot.

Having an artistic DC at least means that presents are always easy to find!!

She might also be interested in a drawing tablet that connects to a laptop, if she has one, but that's maybe something for when she's a bit older, and digital art is a different sort of thing.

There are also drawing manuals for all sorts of styles, say if he wanted to draw Pokémon characters there’s a book for almost anything you can think of.

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 01/10/2023 17:40

some pastels might be nice, they are relatively cheap and quite easy to get the hang of

for drawing, maybe also a set of coloured pencils of different skin tones

At that age DS went through a phase of enjoying drawing using posca pens on pebbles. I bought some spray on sealant and a book of ideas

(Sorry, correct 'she' to 'he' in my post!)

Iwasjustasking · 01/10/2023 18:41

posca Pens, all the kids want them at that age!

sofia31 · 01/10/2023 20:27

Thanks for all the suggestions, there's lots there to have a look at.

I was also going to say The Works, we have bought a couple of the previous boxes from Scrawlrbox as well. And TK Maxx is a bit unpredictable but can have some really nice art supplies
