Dd7 struggles to play with toys, she doesn’t really have the concentration and imagination so I find it hard to buy her things BUT she absolutely loves art and craft/colouring/drawing. She will spend literally hours doing it.

im thinking of making her one of these for xmas. She has thousands of pencils and things but they are all just in a cupboard in the kitchen/on the table constantly. I’m thinking of buying her new things etc.

but what do I put in it? Is it a rubbish idea for a 7yo? I think she would love it!

My crafty six year old would love this! If we had somewhere to store the trolley I’d do the same! Id have boxes with buttons / pipe cleaners / feathers / straws / tissue paper / coloured paper then obv pens, pencils, glue, tape, scissors!

If you have one - go to a hobbycraft store lots of bits and bobs to choose from and they (used to) have a loyalty card for discounts. Failing that the range is good for crafty things like ribbons, pots and baskets to put thing in, coloured card and paper, stickers, glue sticks, colouring books, those scratch and reveal pictures safety scissors etc.

My 8yo DD would love this too. All her crafts are chucked in a box at the moment

She will love it. I got a craft table one year for I think my then 7 year old. Was worried I'd got her boring furniture but we all loved that table for years.
Not this exact one but something similar.

We have that type of trolley for my 7 yo DS (not as neat as that though). We got it from IKEA and you can get pots that clip on the side for pens and pencils. We have paper, stamps, rubbers, glue, scissors and assorted bits on the top part, painting stuff on the middle then boxes with stickers, ribbon and beads on the bottom.

One thing you could add is stuff for decoupage, to cut and stick (can collect yourself and buy scraps on eBay and so on). I've been collecting a stash for a while, bits of fabric and so on too.

Great idea, we have a similar trolly from IKEA, at the moment it is being used for DD's dolls accessories but I would like to use it for craft.

I would have all the pens in pots, but also a couple of boxes for the little stickers and gems that seem to get lost easily.

Hobbycraft used to do a bumper box of crafty bits for about £5, you could get one and sort it out into pots as it all comes in one box.

I recently got one (not that trolley) for my DS9, but as it's in his room I kept it pretty simple:

  • felt tips, pens, pencils and crayons in pen pots (she can redecorate old containers, tins, plastic kids cups for this), I bought clear makeup brush pots that fitted neatly across one tier to sort DS's.
  • drawing paper, craft paper, scrap paper (in a clear doc folder), his sticker folder etc. in next tier
  • top tier holds his favourite drawing pens, scissors, erasers, glue stick, washi tapes and sellotape, sharpener

I've seen some amazing, elaborate ones involving rolls of paper attached to them, pre-organised craft activity packs, etc. but mine was very cheap to sort out, and we keep all the crafty junk like old boxes and pipe cleaners in a separate cupboard of doom downstairs anyway.

Great idea! Also some colour in/ scratch books

Coralie1 · 16/09/2023 00:24

I loved arts and crafts when I was wee and I would have LOVED that as a present. It will be a great gift.

Broodywuz · 16/09/2023 07:20

My 5 yo would love this, I've actually been looking on line to see if you can buy something similar.

Justpoppingon · 19/09/2023 09:29

I've made one for my daughter's birthday! She is younger than your daughter so I've split the sections into art, crafts and play dough - would that still work for a 7 year old or is she too old for play dough? I have bought a couple of craft books to go with it. Attached photo because I love it (she hasn't had her birthday yet - it won't look like this for long 😂).

@Justpoppingon That looks amazing!

Justpoppingon · 19/09/2023 21:11

@SnowJamz Ahh thank you - it was a nice little nerdy project for me 😂

This is a great idea @Indoorvoicesbluey . My 7 year old also loves arts and crafts and we had the idea trolley full of stuff for him before his 2 year old brother started using them to colour the walls so they’re locked away for now! The 7 year old currently loves making book marks for everyone he knows and posting them off to them. I got loads of supplies from Temu for him (and me!) including stickers, charms to hang off strings from the top, a puncher to round the edges (and make them really professional!) and a hole punch. I got a paper trimmer to cut the card neatly. We even dried flowers from the garden and stuck them on with modge podge. Keeps him busy for ages.
