Good uk Christmas markets (not London)

Hi
We have just spent Christmas and new year in Florida and the parks were decorated so lovely and even in the heat it felt christmassy (on the cold spell we had even more so!!).
Very aware that this Christmas could feel a bit flat after such a special one and do I am looking at taking ds (18) and dd (15) away somewhere in uk for a couple of days once they finish school/sixth form.
Does anyone have any suggestions of good Christmas markets or anywhere else to visit in the week before Christmas.
Don't really want to go to London as only live an hour away and go lots.
Thanks for any suggestions

Manchester is the best I think closely followed by Birmingham

I was in York just before Christmas and would love to go back. The city centre was beautiful, the market was bustling and there was loads to do.

York.

SeasonsHeatings · 17/01/2023 18:11

100% York

The market is really festive and York is just a beautiful place to visit.

Chatsworth house is the best! Far better than Manchester, York or any of the cities

jeepjeep4 · 17/01/2023 18:14

Lincoln - very festive with cathedral and castle.

The German ones are lovely. I've been to them in Berlin, Dusseldorf and Cologne. V atmospheric, and much better than UK ones.

Gloriousgardener11 · 17/01/2023 18:16

Bath is beautiful but it tends to end early and gets very crowded.

LordSugarTits · 17/01/2023 18:19

Manchester has been absolutely crap the last 2 years. Chester possibly but tbh I'd get a cheap flight and go to Nuremberg or somewhere

BrandNewBicep · 17/01/2023 18:21

Manchester is awful now, tacky and overcrowded. I'm not convinced any of the UK markets are that brilliant.

bookish83 · 17/01/2023 18:23

York
Edinburgh
Chatsworth

Not Manchester, so tacky now

Thanks everyone like the sound of York we will be going by train and the station doesn't look too far from the centre either.

DH and I went to Bath in early December , I think it was the last weekend or it finished the next weekend ?

Very busy , the queues for the foot stalls especially .
We went on a bus tour , the coaches were allowed to drop us in a park then collect us from there , the car parks were full and queues were long . Park&Ride bus queues were massive too .
It was nice , festive , beautiful lights and Bath is a gorgeous city , but I wouldn't go to another .

We've been to SouthBank years ago .

Edinburgh

Lincoln - very festive with cathedral and castle.

Lincoln has always been popular but the last one was far too popular! It was a nightmare, so busy you literally couldn't get near the stalls, people were like sardines not even able to just walk around

Largethighsbadeyes · 22/01/2023 20:43

Chatsworth, haddon hall

OnceRuralNowUrbanbliss · 23/01/2023 07:25

Chester. Not Birmingham so crowded and tacky

York is a nice city but from memory the Xmas market wasn’t that big (it might have grown since I was there though)
Birmingham seemed more authentically European when I went.
Edinburgh is truly awful.
